- Up next is another Magnavox ZV457MG9A DVD/VCR that eats the tape and will not play a tape. Once I serviced the Mode Select Switch, the tape operation issues were resolved. It had a snowy picture on playback in both the 2 hour and 6 hour modes. I found the rotary transformer/Lower drum assembly was defective, Not what I ever expected to see.

Thank you .. thank you. At all.. I'm still loving your repairs..
Thanks for your content that you provide. 🙌 This media player turned out to be a very sick player. Excellent job!
Thank you Barry!
Soldering that tiny wire was tempting. That's the sort of repair that makes me crazy, and is never worth all the extra effort. The customer never cares how skilled the repair was... he just wants it fixed.
Dang Steve, your customer is going to be so happy with your repair. The picture from this player looks fantastic from here. All the best to you and yours.
I have had rotary transformer failures. The glue that was used to secure the wires went corrosive and dissolved the copper
Dealt with a pair of Bryston 4B today with blinky light issues. Severe heat problem on the led boards. A bad design for sure.
Steve! You’re awesome!
My Mom has a Magnavox 427 that you’ve obviously seen many of…I dug through all of your Magnavox videos and as usual the problem was the mode selector switch. Disassembled and followed your instructions for cleaning it as well as other components, and works good as new! Thankfully no capacitor issues as my soldering capabilities are questionable.
If I may make a suggestion for the channel…it would be a big benefit to have videos just of the disassembly and reassembly of common electronics like this that you see come in. Just a suggestion, regardless your videos were immensely helpful - thank you!
One of your best, I salute you
They could have saved their reputation on so many of these by just using a little dielectric grease on them at the time of manufacture...I see tons of these for sale on many sites esp. Goodwill and I think of all these videos you have done every time I see one.
Thank you..
Great repair . Enjoyed the video , i would have jumped at the chance of repairing the broken wire though, your first thought was not in this universe, my first thought was , id love to try to fix that , and im pretty confident i could repair that drum assembly , maybe its because i come from a pretty poor background , where nothing is dead untill its really really dead and we make do and mend
Not common for that failure, probably a wire that was stressed during manufacture of the assembly, and took all these years to finally break. Fixable though, though fiddly, and you need a really fine tip on the iron to do it and solder a wire to the bare end, then use a drop of superglue to hold it down.
would use a 10V capacitor there on the 5V rail, most of the time they are the same physical case, and same ripple current ratings as well, or at least close enough. That allows use on those SMPS units that have 9VDC rails as well. Plus primary side start up capacitor, did that one test well, they also do fail a lot.
I prefer to use a capacitor that will be utilized to about 80% of their voltage rating. If you use a much higher rated voltage, then the capacitor never becomes fully "formed" and it may actually decrease it over all lifespan.
Thank you for the interesting problem. Was the fault on the rotary head compatible with the kind of symptoms the player was showing? Seems to me it should not have shown a clean image ever??
My thoughts also. I guess it sat for several years, then would not play a tape. So who knows what happened during that time.
Those caps are "Sus"cons. they're suspect so they get replaced.
I have a Magnavox vcr combo made January 2007 that eats my tapes, but I don't care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everything is proven people like myself are buying VCR players itself not combos only VCR player itself for 43 dollars everything proven there not hard finding online it's the people who stops tilling people the truth now days
