    I grab my 490 for firewood chores regularly. Bought it in 19 after being straight gassed. It wears a 55cc cylinder now and is very happy.

      @wcm68tn chicom. I chose it because it was $15 and it was my first deep dive into porting. Crazy its still going.

    Good stuff Joe. Can't comment on any experience with the oe 346, but I have a ne, ported by Mastermind. It's a good runner.
    Unfortunately, at the time, Randy was drilling out the tank vent mechanism, as it was causing a restriction with the increased fuel flow as reported by customers. Unfortunate, as after filling up, enough fuel had dripped out the tank venting into the intake elbow and into the air box housing that it backfired and caused a fire.
    The fire then melted the feed line, which sent more gas into the fiery mess.
    It caught the grass field on fire where I was cutting (was a dry early spring day, kind of spooky). I ended up throwing the saw in a pond to put out the fire.
    Randy fixed it all up, and I discovered that the echo tank vent works well, which he started using after that.
    I don't say this to gain clout or anything, just to give a warning about a bad vent.

      Yeah man… that’s a freaking hilarious story in that I’ve had some crazy stuff happen and had a tree snap off in the middle underneath me from the whipping action caused by kicking off the top… giant chunk off another tree fling back towards and totally crush me and some crazy stuff… watching the area around you catching fire would definitely kick up the old heart rate some and you kept your head on and got it into the water so that was some great work of staying calm enough to handle business!!! Also great that mastermind is definitely the kinda fella who is going to make it right… there’s a good percentage who haven’t or won’t do that stand up thing.,. I’ve always been a 353 Lower rpm’s fan myself but they definitely can rip!

  • @davidvankainen6711

    That is insane!
    Considering that Husqvarna's new 550xp MKII is a pound heavier and "ONLY" 4HP -- what am I missing? Trade-off in durability or are newly mfg products just dumbed down from the factory to comply with manufacturing efficiency and EPA "green" agendas? Do you get 4HP from a stock 550 on your dyno? I guess there is always calibration / measurement uncertainty. That said, at least if repeatable, the comparison runs on the dyno are pretty telling! Just -- WOW!

    • @hillbilly4christ638
      @hillbilly4christ638 Před 4 měsíci

      You hit the nail on the head. I figure for general work, a 5hp saw that is lightweight carrying a 24” bar is just about ideal. Low fatigue and real world performance makes a great saw. These saws are so restricted that they add a bunch of weight that increases fatigue. So what is better? A large displacement heavy saw that is supposedly efficient or a lighter lower displacement saw that is tuned and breathing easy. My money is on the easy breather. If you are worried about longevity, add a little more oil to the mix to keep your saw happy. This goes for cars too by the way. Another thing, there is no way batteries can replace any of this. About the time you increase performance on a battery, you have an explosion and a real forest fire. These environmentalists are idiots. Emphasis on the mental.

    Does porting the 346 shorten the life or make it more prone to issues? I love my 346 OE but I’d be crushed if it shortened its life by trying something different with it.

      @@dynojoemods2764Ok, thanks! Do you reckon it would make sense to combine a muffler mod with a base gasket delete on this saw? I mean, if your saw is in good shape and you don't feel like grinding away on your cylinder...

    • @f9qo
      @f9qo Před 7 měsíci +1

      That's what I did to my 346. Now my favorite limbing saw. I don't exactly remember, but I think the squish was right in there desirable for a work saw without the base gasket.

      345 needs a spacer and can use the 346 cylinder. They make pretty good runners that way
