Dunkey said himself that game journalism sucks because there's no connection between the reviewer and the reader, we don't know them or their interests. Well with Dunkey, we DO know him, we know him extremely well at this point, and what we DO know is he hates random encounters, JRPGs and turn-based combat. So naturally, a game that goes back to its roots with all three as classically as possible with little to no shortcuts involved? Dunkey ain't gon' like that one. I came into this review expecting that, got just that, and my personal interest in the game remains unchanged. Thank you for the review, Dunkmin, but I'm sorry I don't listen to your reviews anymore because you didn't like Bubsy 3D.
Exactly this. Dunkey probably didn't know the point of this game is going back to the root of JRPG core.. Well, he hated those elements, so ofc this game is not for him.
As someone who octopathed the traveller, this is entirely correct. The game is really really slow 50 percent of the time and the only main character interactions that you get are unvoiced travel banter that appears once per chapter. Half the time it makes no sense why there the stereotypical characters are working together in the first place. And the weird half-hidden multiclassing feature, while cool, completely destroys the unique gameplay styles that each character had previously. I like cheesy writing and characters though so 6/10

Well if you're not a fan of turn based combat and random encounter I would really recommend this game called Bookworm Adventures Delux, it has the perfect mix of strategy and story telling and a fantastic pace and I would say its one of if not the most intuitive games of all time. 0:59 "he has to reveal he's actually a knight, which we already knew" you might be onto something there. Like, imagine a game where in the beginning you're playing as some pansy ass pacifist bitch but then like 20% of the way into the game you learn your character is in fact a badass muthafucka from their past days and they've been just holding back for their enemies safety. Now THAT would be a cool concept for an RPG I think
Get this, that's exactly what the people in the game see it as. We aren't the ones in the dark. That's why when the game told you "Your name is Olberic and you are a Knight" you should be ready to know everything HE knows about the situation because he is you. The problem is everything that you do end up learning about the story is found after the first chapter of the game, like any good story ever told, but Dunkey called the game bad and moved on before he got to see that Simply put, it's like Cars from the perspective of Doc Hudson instead of McQueen. We know we're a retired badass, they don't.
As someone who's played through both Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2, I must say Dunkey was completely spot on here. Despite being a very well made game, the flaws that he points out are pretty noticeable and annoying. However, I must also say that many of these errors were fixed in the sequel: There is an option to make battles progress 2x faster, the stories are much more unique and they intertwine much better with each other than in the first game. Since Octopath Traveler 2 is a completely standalone sequel, I'd recommend anyone who hasn't played the games to just play it instead of the first game. If, however, you intend to play them both, make sure to play Octopath Traveler 1 first, since moving to the sequel will then feel like a pretty big upgrade rather than viceversa.
I have both of them but I can't get myself interested in the Frist game even with the mods and so on But when I decided to try octpath traveller 2 I felt like it was an away better experience and the knight there ( hikari is just away better than Ot1 ones) who is straight up cringy to say at least

I'm loving the game... But not in the way I assume many people hoped THEY would. I enjoy the mild grind and bosses, as We'll as just the simplicity of the field actions. The individual character stories for me are the icing on the cake, though I've done the first chapters for 4 characters.
I came here because of your video on critics. I'm currently playing through Octopath Traveler and am absolutely loving it... Because I love turn based combat and the combat in this game is very enjoyable... To me. Everything you said about the characters, the story, the lack of interaction between the characters, all of it is 100% true. I don't understand why you pointing that out is so controversial. It should be called out so that hopefully the sequel will fix those issues. Gamers are weird.
It’s a great, if overall by-the-numbers JRPG. Thoroughly enjoyed the 58 hours I spent with it, though I do wish it made an effort to include the other characters in each other’s stories. That’s my take, Your Excellency

The story telling in JRPGs is vastly overrated. Octopath honestly has better story telling than say, FF7. The stories in Octopath are small scale, but they feel more relatable. FF7 is just nonsense from start to finish.

@@dimitrisergei1637 Watching shit unfold, strategising your way to victory. Allowing you to control multiple characters in one encounter. Trying out different teamcomp. Enjoy a slower paced game where the charm is the decision making process and not nerve racking high octane gameplay. These are some of the stuff I enjoy in turn based combat.
@Markus Alfred Levo Would that be for mostly every turn based combat game or specifically octopath? Truth be told apart from its soundtrack octo doesn't have much going for it (it wasn't terrible but it certainly wasn't great)
@Markus Alfred Levo Oh, dunkey makes some good points. But don't go judging a game without having at least a decent grasp of what happens in it. Especially story wise. For example Dunkey points out how the characters don't interract with each other. That is indeed a flaw, however later in the game this is fixed. Depending on your party after certain story elements happen characters will react and add their point of view into an other character's story arc. And even if I haven't finished the game, the few story I closed clearly hinted at a big finally including the eight characters. This is like when he criticized Celeste's 8th chapter being accessible behind crystal hearts that you gain inside the B-sides, while failing to acknowledge that crystal hearts are also hidden inside regular chapters (the game hints you at that in chapter 3 when you run by one that is out of reach). Dunkey makes a lot of valid points and has a superb analysis of many things, but I'd advise to take everything he says with a grain of salt when he talks about a game you didn't play.
I love this game, the combat is actually fun and it's got amazing music. In my experience, the battles aren't slow as long as you're hitting the weakness of enemies and it's not as gritty as other JRPG games I just naturally progressed from town to town having around 20 encounters. The only time I felt this game to be remotely grindy is when I had to properly level up my characters to finish side quests/dungeons and prepping for the secret final boss. Side quests are tedious to find because some of them are vague so I had to google some of them to get 100% completion. While It's true the characters don't have much interaction with each other and I understand why people hate it. In my opinion, their travel banters are endearing and great just because they are uncommon and it shows their personality and what could have been if they met up as ordinary friends. However, the lack of interaction between the characters during their individual storylines does suck.
Exactly, that's why this video is kinda pointless. He's already expressed that he hates nothing more in a game than turn-based RPG's, so why would you review one? What's the point?
katelyn ast Kind of. It's fairly clear he hasn't played past all 8 optional first chapters. The game really shines once you get to the level 2's and you could theoretically just skip some of the characters. He also didn't at all focus on the battle system or beauty of the game's art and music.
Japan has a different way of telling stories. A way that from my pov doesn't translate well to story telling inside a video game. I've never been able to grasp a story in a JRPG. It always feels so samey and formulaic. Either that, or the story "gets good, trust me" after like 14 hours of tutorial screens and another 10 hours of grinding and then 5 hours more of world exposition and character introduction/development. It seems like you always have to play the game for a while before it gets good. I always see JRPG threads full of comments like "keep playing it, it gets really good!" or "yeah sure the first 10 hours are slow, but after that it's an amazing game" I rarely ever see discussions like those in american or european game threads. rdr2 hooks you from the beginning, the witcher 3 has you fighting a griffin relatively early on, skyrim opens with a dragon attack, . meanwhile in jrpg land we're learning what motivates the main character, their tragic back story, and why they're the chosen one.
I generally don't mind a slower-paced story. I enjoyed Octopath and it has this neat thing where as you finish each of the 8 stories, you start to notice common threads between them all. That leads you to the (optional) hidden final dungeon, where the overarching story that ties all the characters together gets properly explored. The problem is, until that point (and even then) the characters don't interact with each-other, and in a bubble none of the individual character stories are particularly exciting. The concept of 8 seemingly-separate-but-actually-linked stories is cool, but it doesn't justify having each of those 8 stories vary between boring and fine. Still liked the game though.
@@d3ly746 maybe. Never played trails but just because one game doesn't align with what I've said it doesn't mean my point is entirely made invalid. All I'm saying is that from my personal experience, all the jrpgs I've played except for persona and a couple of others have been boring as hell because the stories just aren't strong enough to excite me about turn based game play.
I agree with most of that, especially with my experience playing the original FF7 recently. I was bored as hell through the Midgar start segment, but when I got out of Midgar and started exploring the world I got WAY more interested in it. Also, the appeal of turn-based combat in most JRPGs just goes completely over my head. I've heard people describe these games as "strategic", but all I see is a watered-down game of chess where something like dodging isn't even a thing dependent on skill or reflexes, but the chance/luckiness of not getting hit by something. Like I said, watered-down chess except you can't grind in chess to stomp enemies out easier. The only turn-based game I've seen that handles this gameplay type PERFECTLY is Undertale, where the combat is mostly another way of communicating the game's themes of the struggle of pacifism in a hostile world. I'll end by saying a lot of these JRPGs need to earn an extremely valuable lesson in storytelling: "Sometimes, less is more." I swear, a lot of these games are the equivalent of a person who never shuts the fuck up, but still ends up with barely anything valuable to say.
As someone who adores rpgs I really didn't enjoy octopath. I don't mind random encounters and love turn based battle systems but I really think those ended up falling short here. Random encounters happen far more frequently than they should, and the actual battles themselves take ridiculous amounts of time. On top of this, the game is incredibly grindy, since there are 8 party members that only gain exp when they are active in the party. The thing that really makes me sad about octopath is that these problems have very simple solutions. I honestly think that if they just offered an option to speed up battles, not only would it make the battle system less tedious, it would also make grinding an easier pill to swallow. (Octopath's spiritual predecessor, bravely default did this and its battle system was amazing.) Also, the random encounters rate would just need to be altered slightly to be tolerable. Octopath has a lot of things about it I really like, such as the art style and its general concept, but if the main game play loop just isn't fun, then for me, the entire experience is ruined.
Or just design the game without any grind in mind. For eg Pokemon. I have only beaten fire Red because that was my first , and now I can't stand the grind of any Pokemon game. The first few hours are fun but when you hit that roadblock, bam . But recently I discovered rom hacks and they are much more enjoyable because some of them are made with min grind in mind . Ideally you should fight a 10-15 tough enemies that require some strategy and you gain enough xp for the boss. Also one thing I like with Pokemon is they have the repels to avoid the random encounters. There should be a mechanic like that in every rpg

I'm playing through the game now for the first time, and I'm about 6 characters in. I was hoping your current party members would affect these encounters more, but they all play out the same as if you had just started the game and picked your first character.
Yep. Octopath Traveler has superb music, presentation and combat, but the story is complete ass. I'm replaying the game right now while skipping all the cutscenes. Every single one of them bores me to tears

The fighting in this game is like eating crab. Fighting low level enemies in unsatisfying because you spend so much time breaking the defence to get so little meat. Its not worth the effort. Fighting challenging monsters is like a large king crab. The shell is tough so you got to use all your tricks to break it and then dig into the juicy meaty goodness. So satisfying.

I love how the ds dragon quests deal with the monotony of repeated fights; the enemies chase you on the map, so with a bit of finesse you can avoid them entirely. And when they are significantly weaker than you, they'll run away, and you can chase them if you actually need to grind them.

At this point it must be a joke. He is only talking about the negative/controversial stuff and no positive things and you can also see in the video that he isn't even playing it correctly at all. Level 22 and only one character? There must be clearly something wrong. If anything this video made me dislike Dunkey a bit, not because of his opinion but because this is a cheap as lame video.
TheSchwarzKater
I think he chose one character because he wanted to extend the length of the battle to prove a point
And deservingly so. This video is extremely low effort and uneducated. It’s fun to critique a game, but doing it based on misinformation and criticizing a game mainly due to it being an RPG is extremely, for lack of a better word, stupid.

@@gffg387 the snail is low level, even with "level scaling" there would be no point to it, since that means there is a stat increase in the npc but nowere close to the players, and even then it means the game is shit.
you cant as others even in other forums stated that random encounters even at low level areas, you cant one shot them.
the break mechanic is shit, so yeah the game is awful, you have to WAIT AND NOT DO ANYTHING FOR IT TO FILL
so of course its going to be bad if you litterly have to NOT DO ANYTHING, the combat pacing is going to be bad.
The pacing is so bad and slow in battles, that to increase it you have to NOT play the game and wait for the meter to fill, which is bad, tedious and boring gameplay. others didnt buy it because of this and what others said due to these negative reviews and made sure that it took what? 5 YEARS before another octopath traveler game was released. the gameplay is 80% the same, the graphics style dont take alot to make, so it kinda proves dunkey made this happen

The problem is everything that you do end up learning about the story is found after the first chapter of the game, like any good story ever told, but Dunkey called the game bad and moved on before he got to see that

Nothing wrong with disliking a JRPG for all the dislikable things about JRPGs.
I have both of them but I can't get myself interested in the Frist game even with the mods and so on

2:14 you can blame Dungeons and Dragons for the random encounters.
just remember guys, dunkey doesn't usually like turn-style RPG's
yeah but he brings up genuine criticisms
Exactly, that's why this video is kinda pointless. He's already expressed that he hates nothing more in a game than turn-based RPG's, so why would you review one? What's the point?
katelyn ast Kind of. It's fairly clear he hasn't played past all 8 optional first chapters. The game really shines once you get to the level 2's and you could theoretically just skip some of the characters. He also didn't at all focus on the battle system or beauty of the game's art and music.
Then why would he review it

Shnitzel, dude what the hell? Only black people can say that!
I always see JRPG threads full of comments like "keep playing it, it gets really good!" or "yeah sure the first 10 hours are slow, but after that it's an amazing game"
I rarely ever see discussions like those in american or european game threads. rdr2 hooks you from the beginning, the witcher 3 has you fighting a griffin relatively early on, skyrim opens with a dragon attack, . meanwhile in jrpg land we're learning what motivates the main character, their tragic back story, and why they're the chosen one.
Trails series has already proven you wrong
Hey!
The "scholar" class first ability it's an ability that makes random encounters appear less often (it works really good).
Just that.
This comment could have been made shorter with two words, Your excellency!
