    Instantly subscribed after watching this video....fucking wizard...

    • @jasonbell5152
      @jasonbell5152 Před 3 měsíci +2

      Wasn't a perfect freehand straight cut, but close enough. The circular guide and saw blade follow a pencil line. Doesn't need to be micron perfect, not building a dining room table. Home RenoVision is experienced. The offcut sides butt against the studs out of sight. The saw cut can slightly wobble to permissible limitation of the available 1.5" fastener surface. Veering off track just makes it look Homer but still structurally strong.
      The video says the first shelf will be 30" above the floor. If he marked the tape at 30", by installing the horizontal 2x3 bottom on the line plus the 7/16th" OSB breadth, that's 2-15/16" above 30". And I don't know where the "25"" came from except a minor miscue in making the video.
      This is a great shelf at minimal material cost. I would extend the 1x4 mounting blocks to the floor to get full load bearing with the screws as secondary support.

    This worked out really good, thanks! Including getting the materials and clearing out a wall of stuff it went on, putting it all back, etc... yesterday I spent a total of about 6 hours and $60 to complete this. I'm in a far NW suburb of Chicago. Going to do two more today, which now that I have done it once, will probably take me half the time it took to do one - again, including getting the materials, clearing out a lot of stuff and putting back in place, etc.
    Including tax:
    3 - 1x3's - $8
    4 - 2x3's - $14
    1 - OSB - $28 (they cut it in half)
    2 small packs 1.25" SPAX screws - $5
    2 small packs 2.50" SPAX screws - $5
    I cut the three 1x3 legs off at just over 5' and cut the remaining pieces in half for the six supports on the back.

    Saw this video a few months ago and knew we had to do it in our basement. We built 3 shelves in our basement. I had extra 2x4 from finishing the basement, so I just popped over to Home Depot for the 5/8" OSB. Even had them go ahead and cut both sheets in half for me!
    Lumber has gone up in price, but 2 sheets was $60 for a full wall of shelves. "cheap" plastic shelves are $50-70 and you'd need 4+ for the same amount of storage.

    @brilaw84 Před 2 lety +11

    Hi Jeff. I appreciate your practical advice. A couple of comments/suggestions on this video to make the shelves look a little better (and provide some more support). Suggest leaving the cut edge facing out so that the "green and groove" don't show. Also suggest attaching the 2 X 3 directly to the bottom of the aspenite first, then cutting the support scabs the exact length from the bottom of the 2 X 3 to the floor and to the lower shelf. This would look better and add some additional support. Full-length scabs below the 2 X 3 at the wall would also add some support. Keep up the good work! I've learned a lot from your videos!

    Just wanted to say thanks for this video! The previous homeowners made some terrible shelves that were too shallow and were still falling down because they missed most of the studs. I just made one of these out of the 2x4's they used and it works great! It will no doubt hold anything we need it to! We needed them to be 80"x29" so I needed 2 sheets of particle board, but they look great!

    Love the 'simplicity' of this approach, great video. Years ago in a pub in London, England ('The Greyhound', Oval just south of the river) I was having a beer with a regular who happened to be a brain surgeon (true story), I asked him how he justified charging USD10,000 for a procedure which basically entailed drilling a hole in the skull. He said "if i had to itemize my bill it would read ' 1) Drill hole USD 10, 2) Knowing where to drill USD9,990 :-). My point is, if you're a bit 'handy' ....god it looks easy :-), thanks again

    I built two of these joined together. I used all 2x3s because they were cheaper than 1x3. One critique/ suggestion. I eventually had to run the front 2x3 that Jeff screwed to the osb, full length at 8ft so that the supports on the legs supported this front horizontal. This allows the leg to support the sagging weight of the shelf instead of relying on screws through the osb to hold the horizontal and the weight. (The screws tear through, ask me how I know) other than that great video and great cheap and easy project. 👍

    REVERSE DRILLING SYSTEM: In case others don't know what Jeff meant by his 'reverse drilling system' (I didn't, I had to look it up), when drilling through strapping to make sure it doesn't split you drill in backwards until the screw is through the first piece and then drill forwards for the last bit. At least that's what I think is going on. You'll notice that each time he drills through the strapping he drills a bit, stops and then finishes. At the stopping point he is switching from reverse to forward. I'm guessing he demo'd this in some other video that I haven't watched yet.
