    If you take a styrofoam pool noodle and cut it up into portions, you can wrap your sabiki rigs on them so they don’t get tangled. Less of a hassle imo 🤙🏼

    Man, I grew up fishing at Newport pier all through the 90’s up until around 2005 was the last time I fished there. I still walk down to the pier to see what they’re catching. It’s kinda sad to see that it’s usually all mackerel despite the nice chart at the beginning of the pier with all the species of fish that used to be there.
    In the 90s we caught corvina, perch, croaker, and halibut. The bait to use for those was sandstorms they were. $20 dollars for 10 at Grant’s (gunstore).
    0:05 Mackerel, we’d catch 3, 4 at a time with the sabiki, bringing home a bucket full of mackerel, and that was a bad day of fishing at McFadden Pier.
    Anyways, I enjoyed your video. You are a brave man. The only non-Asian I’ve seen eating mackerel like that. I eat mackerel too, it’s called saba in Japanese, saba shioyaki is a pretty common recipe for it.

    • @theperchjerker
      @theperchjerker  Před 3 lety

      I like to use 20# braided line (any manufacturer will do 🤷🏼‍♂️) attached to a sabiki rig for catching mackerel and other baitfish… For bigger game fish, I lean towards 65# braid 🤙🏼 If you want to learn some gangster pier rigs, watch this…

      You gotta go at the right time brutha. Fish start to really bite at Santa Monica around 3:30p 4 o clock can catch some big mackerel of that pier and use the right bait. Cut up sardines and anchovies

    Another great video. You seem to use sabiki rig a lot, maybe you should invest in a sabiki rod and your rig will always be ready to use.

    Thanks. I'm visiting Newport Beach again, but forgot to bring my rod. Best thing in California is that no license is needed to fish a public pier and free entry. Downside is that there is little free parking, so might pay >$20/day. Most I've been on about all you see caught are long thin mackerel, like here. They have a dry meat like tuna, which many people like (not me). The Newport Pier is said to be one of the best since a tongue of deep water is just offshore, so said to produce a wide variety of fish. Probably the worst pier is Oceanside, between Newport and San Diego. Even the sign says they found after building it ~1920 that it was placed in a "dead sea" almost void of fish. If you've ever fished Florida piers or the Gulf Coast, you will find California fishing much less interesting.

    If you cut the gills and bleed the fish out in a bucket of water the meat will be super white and have no fishy taste. It also is less of a mess while filleting or butterflying them 👌🏼
