"I don't deserve this." Can we just acknowledge how they just tipped their hats to "everybody deserves tea" line in LBD? Yes? OK.
Can we just appreciate how emma is reacting to Alex leaving like a break up. The ice cream, sad music e.t.c. This shows so well how Emma doesn't fall in love with Alex, she is in love with him the whole time without realising it. MUCH FEELS.
Emma's face when Harriet mentions that Alex looks better without khakis is simultaneously heartbreaking and hilarious.
Harriet showing true hufflepuff spirit :-)
Too accurate!!
I'm confused, so does harriet know about what happened or not?
I have never laughed so much watching this show than with this episode. Emma's cry faces were amazing. "The trees..!" I died.
lol
IKR?! I lost it there, too. Greetings, Mr. Isaacs!
"Sorry Mr Bear, your services aren't needed. Stand down."
Are you BMART? :O
+James Brent Isaacs It's probably extra funny for you since you have the added benefit of knowing Joanna, and with that are able to see a bigger spectrum of her character (her authentic self & acting counterpart) that not many here get to observe.
:)
Well, that was painful. And not just because Emma was still upset and eating ice cream, but there's a shot of Alex's empty office. That hurt. I miss him already.
We all miss him. Though I think Emma misses him the most.
Can we talk about how adorable it is that when Harriet comes back in with her binder, Emma is hugging Mr. Bear and Mr. Bear has a tissue in his paw??
Totes adorbs!!!
The LIL TISSUE OMG
"What would Harriet do?" ^^
Also ...
"We'll start with a theme."
"REDEMPTION."
Me: "Can I get a hell yes?"
Harriet: "Can I get a hell yes?"
Me: *falls off the couch*
seriously the best performance from Harriet all season. she's so much more than a ball of sunshine or ball of sadness. she's SUCH a good friend to Emma and really cares about her. and she's SO MATURE as she runs the business and everything while Emma's away. AHHH!! I love her :-)
The more I see the more I hope that Harriet will choose Martin before she knows about Alex and Emma, she is such a good friend and I don't want to see her hurt :(
Have you read the book? I'm assuming they are going with what happened there
Meagan Rose Yes I did, that's why I mentioned Martin ;), but honestly I hope they won't follow exactly the book on this point.
In this adaptation they developed Harriet's character a lot more, in the book she is not very likable, on the other hand here Harriet is a sensible and kind person and she doesn't deserve to be treated that bad by Emma.
They changed the story for the character of Lydia in LBD, so I hope it will be the same for Harriet ;)
SophieEve88 That's what I was thinking...because doesn't she sort of upset confront him thinking he loves harriet and then he's like um, no then happy happy and then there's like one line about harriet and martin? =/ =/ =/
1) I never thought I'd like Harriet until now.
2) Harriet's dress is really pretty.
3) PLEASE tell me Emma and Harriet will be friends 'til the end.
3) Glad to see Emma's going to try and get back on track.
Emma should have known to wear waterproof mascara on a day like this
How did she ever manage to put make-up on, I ask :D
Emma without Alex. This episode was tragicomic, to be honest. I started laughing a little (sorry Emma), but I ended up crying and sobbing for Alex to be back!
I'm happy Emma will be better next episode, but I JUST WANT ALEX BACK.
Everybody wants Alex back. Can I hear a HELL YES?
Thaís Brito HELL YES
So does Emma.
Team Alex? Hell YES!
Maria Stoycheva NO! No teams!! I'm tired of teams in every fandom!
I love that Pemberley Digital gives characters who were dismissed in the novel a better chance, Lydia in LBD, Harriet in EA. I feel like the class gap is not AS salient in this adaptation and they haven't tried to force it in. NOVEL SPOILERS at this point in the novel, Emma realises her friendship with Harriet is wrong, in part because of the class gap between them, also because Harriet is way ditzy and through her mentorship under Emma, manages to take on all her bad traits and none of her good. But here they've given Harriet a way better chance and in this episode she really comes into her own. Well done!
I love that they have done that at well, especially with Lydia. I like that they make us realize that we don't always know a person and that there are many sides to someone. PD gives us another way to look at things.
***** Really? Even in Clueless?
nubiantigeress *Especially* in Clueless. LOL.
Yes, we have really gotten to see Harriet grow in this series.
That's something I really love too. Austen deals with a lot of class division issues, because of the time she was writing in, and of course, women were written very differently during that time as well. The fact that they keep the spirit of Harriet's silly, socially awkward personality, while still giving her complex character development is such a good way to handle her. Nowadays, of course, we understand that where you come from and how upwardly mobile you are doesn't necessarily make you right or good, and the fact that Harriet is such a real, goodhearted friend, and Emma really does let her company's "status" get her carried away is a great way remain true to the spirit, rather than the letter of the novel.
I love how Harriet's been stepping up here--handling all that extra work, taking charge of everything Emma's neglecting, and, on top of that, being such a sweet friend. That was clever, taking advice Emma had written a while ago and giving it back to her when she really needed it. It's really cool to see how Harriet has grown.
Omg Maddie! Sweet sweet Maddie. I'm so happy they are doing the Maddie/Emma resolution on video!!!
Also, for the first time I am annoyed with Alex. He didn't just leave Emma, he left Harriet to manage that whole company alone. But I"m happy Harriet has come so far and found her confidence. She was so good this episode, and I'm happy she pointed out to Emma that she isn't alone.
You are totally right about Alex leaving Harriet. That pisses me off as well. I get him, of course, he wants to teach Emma a lesson (he always does, doesn't he? that's what the whole novel is about), but that's not cool. I hope he returns after Emma clears things with Maddie.
Well, firstly, as someone has already pointed out, it's quite possible that Alex had no idea that Jane was also leaving, that Emma would have a meltdown, or that Harriet would be left keeping the company afloat (though I mean, come on, she's only been at it a few days, not permanently).
And it's not that Alex is being vindictive--he's not doing all this just to "teach her a lesson". He's angry and hurt that one of his closest friends, someone he thought he knew and thought was a kind-hearted person, would be so quick to be cruel to someone like Maddie just because of a little egging on from Frank Churchill. It's a little like if you found out your best friend had beaten up a six-year-old at the park: it's going to make you angry and drastically change the way you think of that person.
Amethystic95 Alex is constantly reminding Emma that her actions affect more people than she realizes. Alex's departure has effected more than just Emma. He would know that, regardless of Jane's departure. He has done the exact opposite of what he is constantly preaching. I'm not saying I don't understand it, I'm just saying it's a bit annoying. People don't act rationally when upset. I just hope Alex realizes what he did and learns from it. I love Alex, but he isn't perfect. I'm kind of happy he had a slip up b/c Emma is all about growth.
Wait is this the part of the book when he leaves to contemplate some sort of scheme, to not be so obvious about his feelings for Emma? Cause if it is, I am not happy. When they split, in the book, I love how he reach down to kiss her hand and he didn't. I think that was such a powerful moment. That was clearly the moment for the reader to notice how deeply Knightley is into this and he can't do it, because he thinks she might not feel the same. Knightley would never leave Emma abruptly as he did in the last episode, I hope he comes and does that part when says goodbye so he can do his planning and comeback when you know- he acknowledge his feelings to her.
Sarkastic Chik I felt like Alex left so abruptly because he was also on the verge of crying... he seemed really upset too in that video...
Favorite line "The trees!"
I think one of my absolute favorite parts of this series has been watching Harriet develop. Like they did with Lydia in the LBD, Harriet was always a character I could never really relate to or like, but in this, they've expanded her character so much and given her so much depth and now I find myself with a new found love and admiration for her.
Bravo writers and Dayeanne for being so positively brilliant!
"That ice-cream was VERY Emma approved"
#me
I liked the callbacks to the first episodes where Emma was taking Harriet on as a project. And now, the tables have turned. In a lot of ways.
For once, Alex didn't hit a cue. :(
Ok, a bunch of things about this (I have not read the book, so I have no idea what's going to happen next):
1. Great acting! I again think it resembles more of a stage play than a tv show, but it's been that way from the start, and the actors are really rocking it!
2. I'm pretty sure that that moment at 4:02 when Harriet looks at the camera was the first time she has actually done so. It really shows how her confidence has grown and how she is taking charge not only of her life, but how she is going to help out her friend. I don't know if it was a directing idea, or spontaneous by the actress, but wither way, superb!
3. I think Alex is overreacting a little. Emma was definitely in the wrong, but not really out-of-character. I think there is definitley some jealousy towards Frank coloring his motives, and ignoring Harriet seemed really petty. Sure she was calling from Emma's office, but it's not like Harriet did anything wrong.
What about 3? :P
I think it's pretty unprofessional as a partner in a company to just up and leave, but I think he has serious reservations about Emma's behaviour (it does sound like she was incredibly cruel to Maddie Bates) as well as the jealousy aspect. But I think we should allow that he might not have been ignoring Harriet. He might have just missed the call (and it went to voicemail very quickly so maybe his phone was off?!).
Alex is very fond of Maddie, and Emma was exceptionally cruel. I mean even the Elton's thought she was mean (in the book but I assume here too b/c of some tweets). The Elton's, the awful Elton's thought Emma was cruel. I think that says everything we need to know lol
I LOVE that Harriet has become so confident. I actually think Emma breaking down was good for her. She just proved to herself that she can handle anything if she puts her mind to it.
I think you will really love his comeback. After all, he has a brother to visit and some thoughts to clear... but that will come later. For now, I think he's doing a good job making Emma really question her behaviour. Had he not left, do you think she would've decided to change her ways? Not likely ;)
It might be an overreaction if you only look at the cruelty. But keep in mind also that Alex is more self-aware than Emma was at the time (and probably still at this point), and was beginning to realize his feelings for her even as the small qualities he thought were unworthy of her were magnified by her interest in Frank. I could see how he might want to take a break from that (and I believe this might be the parallel to Knightley's departure for London in the book).
Good call on Frank jealousy. That's in the book.
These opening shots could be from "The Walking Dead: Pemberly Digital".
I appreciate the fact that the decision was made to give Emma a scrunchie. You know it's bad when the scrunchies come out. Although you would think she wouldn't be wearing eye makeup, or at least would have put on the waterproof variety.
apart from all of emma's shortcomings, she really did help harriet to blossom into a wonderful person! harriet has just proved that she is now self-confident, smart, and an amazing friend, and now it feels like its time for emma to learn from her. :)
I found it less easy and quick to get addicted to EA compared to the LBD but now I just love what they did with the story and I ship Emma and Alex way more than I shipped her with Knightley in the book (it was actually the only Jane Austen's novel which I could not really predict the end but things are more obvious in the series)
And maybe I'm the only one but as a college student I also love the way it shows how a company works from the inside
I really, really love the direction they took with this video; making Emma's pity party kind of funny to cut the intensity of the last video. Also, making Harriet SHINE. I mean, Harriet's AWESOME in this video.
Poor emma. I assumed this episode she'd apologize to Maddy. Probably next episode. then come Harriettes confession! Then more drama and heartbreak! Can't wait!
at least you can see Maddie visit in the preview of next episode, so probably yes.
Lovely role reversal - I love what they've done with Harriet in this adaptation. She's great. So much more than just a simple girl whose love life Emma messes up. It's great to see these final chapters, but it's sad it's nearly over!
"...what now??"
"THE TREES" *sobs*
Emma drinking coffee like a shot of Tequila is my favorite Emma so far.
WHAT A GOOD. I love Harriet and Emma's friendship, and I love that this episode was able to focus on that friendship. It's really awesome that you can see the positive effect that Emma has had on Harriet, and how close the two have become
Super Harriet, to the rescue!
This was brilliant!! Loved Emma's reaction, loved her missing Alex,ADORED Harriets approach to the situation and her friendship with Emma A+ episode!!
Great, great, great episode. I thought Alex would answer Harriet though. But Emma's reaction is just perfect! No way she's gonna do easily without him.
I though that too immediately...but she was using a company phone, he either wouldn't recognize the number or assumed it was Emma calling.
SPOILER ALERT.
I think he will make some contact before he comes back for good. In the book, he gives a hint of how much he liked to see Emma's attention towards Miss Bates after their fight. Maybe he shows up or call telling Emma that he's not leaving the company, only taking a time off.
It's so incredible to see how much Harriet has grown since the beginning of the series all in this one episode. I really relate to Harriet and her development into a leader because I went through the same thing recently, and it is so empowering. YOU GO, HARRIET.
'the trees!...' hahahahahhaha xD
Other than that, very tragic indeed.
Everyone deserves almond milk mocha.
"I don't deserve this."
*Downs the whole cup*
I started crying when they showed Knightley's empty desk. I am not a stable person.
There's already plenty of talk about the big things in this arc, so here are some little things that made this episode great:
* "Sorry Mr. Bear, your services aren't needed. Stand down."
* Emma's plaintive cry, 'The trees!'
* Harriet's surprised look when Emma chugs a whole mug of coffee down
I am currently watching this with my hair in a bun, wearing a sweatshirt, and eating ice cream. Seeing Emma in that sort of broke my spirit.
When she said, "and now that he's gone, I'm not sure that I wanna do it alone," my heart just broke.
I can't wait for Alex to hit his cue when he finally returns, ready to confess all to Emma.
Also, I laughed way too hard when Emma cries about Alex's khakis. It's okay, Emma, you can always buy him a new pair to apologize.
Harriet, you've got this! You are being such a good business partner and, more importantly, friend to Emma. :)
Harriet is the sweetest! I love how she even comforts Mr. Bear when his services are not needed :P
Poor Emma, she didn't need the blows at the same time...although I think this will help her to change.
Go Harriet! Being a badass and taking charge and helping Emma! It's amazing how much she's grown. And oh no Maddy in the preview. *gulps*
The part with Harriet and the phone not ringing so she can escape and talk to Emma was hilarious and very nicely acted.
Aaaaaaah, Harriet, you're the best friend ever!
Also, I cracked up when Emma cried, "The trees!" LOL amazing!
"The trees!" Haha, I love how this still has the comedy, but it is very realistic. Both these actresses are amazing and I can't wait to see how this goes. For a moment I sort of hoped that Harriet would call Martin, but *sigh* she doesn't.
The interaction with the bear made me smile so hard even when I wanted to cry for Emma. :) :) Also, probably goes without saying but this Harriet is hands down the best Harriet in any version of Emma!! Love her.
Harriet... You are such a wonderful, beautiful friend. I love the change in her and I am so glad that this arc focuses on Emma's change. Love this episode. And now I will hug my teddy. :)
I was not emotionally prepared to see Emma like this. Thanks for being a great friend, Harriet.
Harriet is a sweet heart. :)
"Life is mostly froth and bubble
But two things stand like stone;
Kindness in another's trouble
And courage in your own.
gutenberg.net.au/pages/gordon.html
Well done, Harriett.
she is for sure
Oh, lord, a hoodie and ice cream. I know that feel, Emma.
Somebody just won the Friend Of The Year award. You go, Harriet!
Last one was the best dramatic acting, this one is the funniest of the bunch!
Harriet is awesome! After asking herself what would Alex do, what would Emma do, I think her light bulb moment was remembering Alex's question to her: "What would Harriet do?" And she did it exceptionally well!
Love the matching previous and next episode thumbnails.
Harriet, Harriet, Harriet. I'm so glad Harriet is so amazing in this show. She just shines in this episode.
HELL YES!! Harriet - props for snapping Emma out of it. It is too bad Alex has no way of seeing these videos... or does he???
I'm so proud of Harriet! Stepping in like that? Very Rachel Approved. I was waiting for that comment Emma made to come back and bite her. Poor Emma.
The friendship between Emma and Harriet is so amazing here, especially compared to the book
Aww... Harriet and Emma are genuinely friends. It's so great.
I’ve always loved Emma and Knightley’s friendship and turning it into a partnership here is a stroke of genius. I truly feel for Emma as she can’t even imagine going forward with the business without Alex by her side. Emma might be the main character, and put herself first most of the time, but we get to truly see how much better she and Alex together are, as a team. Also makes me curious about them growing up together, and yeah, now I totally want a prequel of Emma coming up with the business and convincing Alex to come on board
I really love the role-reversal here, where Harriet takes the confidence that Emma helped her to grow and turns it back on helping Emma out of her rut. Love Harriet in this episode. Love her in the series. She's really written in a way that gives her so much more credit than in the book.
Harriet is a really lovely friend. She was great here. And Emma's faces were hilarious.
"I'm not sure if I wanna do it alone even if I can" so much build up djsjskskd and foreshadowing and perfection...Emma is growing yay
I love how at the end when it shows what happened last time, and what will happen this time, Maddy and Jane have the exact same look, the same sassiness in the doorway, they even have the same posture! It's freaky, and awesome.
Harriet has grown, and she might not have as much experience as Alex does, but believe yourself, she is just that major support you need to stand your ground again. You can do it, Emma! I love you!
I really love the Harriet and Emma friendship here, it reminds me of some of the interactions between the Bennet sisters...but really, in both vlogseries, the friendships between female characters are definitely some of the best, most well-developed parts.
WAS THIS AMOUNT OF PAIN NECESSARY.
Can we make "Thank Goodness For Harriet" a thing? She is the BEST.
I absolutely love that we get to see Emma and Harriet's true friendship here! Harriet is fantastic!
Nice job, Harrriet! The student has become the teacher!
I just refreshed this like a mad woman until I could watch it. And wow. That was intense. I've never seen Emma like that. And Harriet was brilliant helping her. Wonderful acting I think. Good episode.
I love the parallel of Maddie and Jane standing in the door in similar outfits.
Although I do feel sorry for Emma in this ep, Joanna Sotomura has such lovely comic timing I couldn't help but laugh at her delivery of some of her lines.
I'm so proud of Harriet :)
Emma you'll be a great client. They'll write books about you. :)
will they now? :D
Kudos to Harriet for sticking around and being such a good friend!
I saw this post on tumblr that in retrospect seems implausible but Alex was walking in casually while Emma cried and I was close to tears myself at the thought of their reconciliation. But then I watched the video and the music and the scrunchie were too funny. Not quite tears, but god, so many feels.
Harriet is an amazing friend. She is so sweet for being there for Emma and helping here.
Oh my gosh. I love how the story of Harriet is really Pemberlified. Like you did for Lydia's. Except of course different life stories. Can't wait to see how you bring Bobby back into her life.
And can't wait to see how Emma Approved ends the show for Emma and Alex. Oh my gosh, I am so going to miss this show! And explains about Frank and Jane. Oh, I love how things are coming together!
Not a mayor Frankenstein fan but will totally still watch the new show to see your version of his story^^*
When Emma said "I don't deserve this" my immediate thought was "everyone deserves tea" (even though it was coffee lol)
i feel so bad for emma and honestly, im crying rn. this is such a sad episode 💔😭
YES HARRIET. You are my hero.
Harriet looks adorable in that dress and shoes combo.
oh and also ... i'm actually crying.
Joanne is a gem of an actress, and Harriet is a gem of a friend.
"...the *trees* !" 😂
I know it's a sad episode, but that gets my every time 😂
Since I'm here so early shall I put the kettle on? I feel like we'll need tea to get through this one...
I LOVE Harriet in this episode!!! She has become so confident! And she is so kind to Emma, and it's clear that she really cares about her :)
Also, I like that this time it is Harriet giving Emma advice and getting her to say "hell yes" - it really shows that they are equal in their friendship now, and that Harriet isn't just Emma's "project" :)
I'd feel bad for Emma.. but she brought this on herself. Time for her to fix what she did.
If you've read the books, this is awful what's going on. Emma and Harriet are too close for this to work out in a good way.
Alexandra Jones I haven't read the books. Been enjoying the web series. Don't want to spoil any endings before it's done.
Paul Mason the island is fake and everyone is actually dead. There wasn't any sort of plane crash at all.
DiehardMechWarrior It took me six seasons to come to recognize that possibility. I refuse to believe that it is the case. Everything happened (including the plane crash), it's just the flash-sideways that confuses people. That was like the stepping stone where people worked out their problems before they all reunited.
Bear in mind, I haven't seen it for years now, so I'm just going on memory here.
I actually hold Frank pretty accountable for this mess. Emma too, but really he is manipulating so many people and Emma is getting all the blame!
"I probably killed a rainforest with these things" [thought processing] "The trees!" [sniff sniff]
Dude Harriet is the best freaking friend in the world.
I'm hoping we get a little bit more introspection from Emma in the future. Less feeling bad for herself and more realizing just how hurtful she was and how she needs to really change. I'm hopeful it'll come!
This episode was brilliant! I think Emma finally saw how much Alex meant to her and that she cannot do it without him, even though she snarked at him quite a lot. :P
Harriet's face when Emma downs the cup x)
I like how they show Emma and Harriets friendship...... they help each other....
Harriet is a magnificent gazelle.
