Good job, TIPS: Don't remove upper arm there is room enoug to remove the strut. This save you a rear wheel aligment.
Don't remove your brake caliper this is also not needed. And for the shock spring two normal wrenches are ok. No need for the special socket.
I do appriciate the work here shown. Nice and tidy :)

Thank You. This is by far the best video on rear E39 shock replacement. Great detail and nothing is missed so its clear to see the full extent of the job. Not so easy of course when your on your hands and knees dealing with bolts that won't budge but we have to factor that in.

Perhaps switch to clean gloves before working with the interior? :) I appreciate the reminders to clean off the nuts and bolts before removing them. It's too easy to be in a hurry. Great camera work. Love the videos- subscribing now.

If you have foldable rear seats in your car the procedure to remove the seats will be a little different and more complicated, but youll find videos on that too. Other than that bot sure, Im about to do this to my 520i 2002 soon.

@@dhankins2012 I just did mine and I have both folding rear seats, DSP, and sun shade. The same procedure would apply, but you can skip the part at 1:20 and 2:39. I thought it was easier since you don't have to remove the actual back support part of the seat, you can just fold them down. The sunshade did require some dexterity but nothing difficult.

Just did this job, just follow the instructions to remove the rear deck and gain access to the strut mount, loosen the nuts but don’t remove, then just right to the 21mm at the bottoms of the shock , remove it and hit the shock with a mallet or hammer towards the inside of the car, it’ll come right out , then remove the nuts on the top and it’ll wiggle right out

In general, the replacement will be the same, the only thing that may differ slightly is the design features of your car.
