The Real Reason I'm Leaving China
Vložit
- čas přidán 28. 05. 2024
- In the last video I said I am leaving China in July, but I didn't really talk about why I'm leaving. In this video, I dive into the many reasons Yvon and I are leaving China. It has been great living in China for 14 years, but everything comes to an end and it is better to leave on good terms than to end up bitter or angry. China will always have a special place in our lives and maybe in the future we will come back for travel or more.
Thanks for watching.

Good luck with your future in Europe, and hope you continue to support China and the balance needed to counter the propaganda.
Best wishes to your future plan. I do wish China can change and allow foreigners to own properties, at least on a small scale.
LOL i didn't need to watch it to know it because of residency. call it red tape. you guys are kinda struck in the middle, too young to get retirement residency, too old to go down the scholar route, the requirement is just too strict for most people to even consider them. I do hope they expand their immigration policies but that for future people, it not really going to do much now. we will see how europe goes... every place has a charm of it own.
@@lagrangewei residency rules is realty. 14 years journey is long enough. John will visit China for sure.
I wish rational minds will prevail in the USA, so people like you or Chinese Americans and Canadians dont have to be concerned about future conflicts. Just wondering how you and Yvonne plan to make a living in Portugal? Farming? CZcams channels?
All the best on your move to Portugal. Thank you for you positive and honest views about your life in China. Wish you and your wife all the happiness, peace and good health in the next stage of your lives.
Thank you so much!
Wish you luck in your new adventures in Portugal
Thank you very much!
Have a great journey ! Bless you all.
Thanks for the kind words.
All the best for your new life in Portugal! Keep in touch on CZcams.
Thank you! Will do!
Sorry to see you go. I myself have been here for 26 years and counting my Wife who is a local and myself own a stand alone house here on the outskirts of Beijing north of the sixth ring Road. I’m within 25 minutes of one of the Great Wall sections. I don’t often travel into downtown if I can avoid it
I do love things here now that I’ve retired something I had to do because of the mandatory retirement age here for pilots being set at 60. And you are right the only way that’s a possibility is because my wife is Chinese.
What struck home with me was what you mentioned about the possibility of tensions between these two big countries. I really have no desire to move back to the US and I do like it here but recently I’ve been wondering if we shouldn’t have some kind of backup plan. I do spend at least a few months in Europe specifically UK every year but the UK is not very easy to just up and move to. Their Visa requirements are quite formidable. So I’m currently looking at my alternatives. I’ve not visited Portugal yet. I almost did two weeks ago, while I was in the UK, but we couldn’t get the timing worked out. Definitely, Europe is the most attractive option I wish you luck in Portugal
Yes, the tensions aren't the biggest concerns... but they are there in the back of my mind. I would hate to see something happen, but I also can't control it. Moving to Portugal is only a little easier because of my wife (just like you here). If we could have stayed and done what we wanted, it would have been a harder decision, but we are happy to move forward on good terms and not having hate or bitterness towards China. Good luck in the future and hopefully you won't need a backup plan.
If you're considering Europe, UK or USa then you've definitely not done sufficient research lol
Europe in the long run is not a good place to be as it will lose the competition of its industry and lack of resources and people will become poorer. The chaos will be back to Europe ahead other Western countries as the Global South becomes more independent with the back of the BRICK.
Wow. Interesting u say u want to move and live in the UK in your retirement. I’m the opposite. I’m living in London, Uk and would love to move and retire to China. Uk is becoming horribly expensive, crimes on the increase, and the politic is just as bad as the US. I’m planning on doing a trip to China sometime (field research). Would u be open for a meet-up and a chat?
Other parts of Europe are probably worth it, but I’ll be honest the UK has been going downhill over the last decade
Feel sad to hear that u r leaving. As a Chinese, I also feel it's too expensive. I live in Suzhou, a tier-2 city in China, but still too expensive for most people which could cost 4 million RMB to buy a 100m2 house. This is maybe the biggest problem of China's economy.
Anyway, thank you for your videos and hope one day you can come back. I still expect more videos from you.
Yes, the prices are too high even in tier-2 cities. Hopefully, Yvon and I will come back to visit in the future. Thanks for the wishes.
Rent is very affordable and owning is very expensive in China, the factors are:
For marriage you need to own. No Property tax, the nearly artificial higher prices will not reflect in a higher tax bill.
Rent is low as culture is that you should only pay 15% of income, not 40% like in U.S.
As the owner has no tax liability, rent doesn't have to be 30% higher to cover for it.
Condo association fees is only $35/month, while in U.S it would be $350 as finding a maintenance man who is not a dug addicted felon requires a $100K salary.
Or could it be that the high price includes the developers cost of the 70yr land lease from the Province?
I don't know how high it is, but it could be seen as a one-time upfront cost of "property tax", unlike U.S where you pay 2% of the value every year forever.
There is a sayings: Seeing the directions of birds migrations, one would know whether or not the lands are habitable and peaceful..Each and every country has its pros & cons..It is up to each individual to feel whether or not the lands they wanted to settle in are where they wanted to be..Sometimes, living in a country that feels SAFE and NOT BEING HARRASSED are more important to one than others who like the city's lifestyle of hustling bustling as in New York..
Thanks for all your great videos. Follow your hearts and dreams. Welcome back anytime for amazing and varied trips in the future. Best wishes !
Following your heart and dreams is the best advice. Trying to force something that would be difficult just because we have had a great time here, doesn't make sense to us. We would rather leave on good terms and have good memories of China.
Thank you for explaining your reasons to move to Portugal.
Your plan is well thought out. It will be a success in your new venture.
I certainly will follow your Chanel when you are ready to show your new house and the new living environments in Portugal.
Your feelings about the US & China’s relationship and future development echoes mine as a Canadian of Chinese decent, even after 56 years in Canada.
At 76 years old I hope that I do not have to experience the concentration camp as the Japanese did during the war.
Thank you again for presenting a fair minded and true about China in your videos.
All the best to you and your wife.
Michael from Quebec CANADA
Yes, I hope it never gets to that point, but you never know and it is better to leave on good terms and have fond memories of China vs. being bitter or hateful. China has been great and we are grateful for our time here. Hopefully, more people can see the truth and realize conflict isn't necessary.
Hi Michael, if it happens again, I will be 1st in the line. It is much safer inside the camp than outside; don't you think?
@@orangutan4696 You are right.
@TripBitten 100%. People will lose their common sense once they see body bags coming back from front lines.
Very valid reasons. All the best and looking forward to your future content.
Much appreciated!
Following your heart is a good thing. All the best!
Agreed! Thanks for the wishes.
Good luck!!! Looking forward to seeing you on your new adventure and would love to see the house and videos of the renovations.
Thank you. We will make an announcement about the house videos in the future. Doesn't really fit on this channel or Yvon's, so might start a new channel just for that content because people like those types of videos.
Thank you for sharing your life story with us. All the best in Portugal! Another adventure awaits 😊
Thank you very much!
i respect your honesty .
Living the simple life in an agrarian setting sounds wonderful when you have the energy and enthusiasm to tend the chicken, maintain the home, cultivate the land. After about 10 years, your ‘simple life’ on the farm becomes too demanding. The numerous chicken manure, scattered eggs, and daily feeding become laborious rather than a joy. And the weeds seems to grow faster than you can pull them out, and bugs and rodents devour your vegetables before you even notice their sprouting. Good luck, keep us informed.
It is possible after 10 years, we might not like it and reinvent ourselves again! Life is a journey and people want different things at different times. No need to hold yourself to one thing forever....
And then it time to move to apartment
Yes, at 73 I can attest to that!
Thank you! I wish you both the best! Can’t wait to see your garden!
Thanks so much!
@@TripBitten YW! 😺

Thank you!
It was great hanging with you in your China journey. Best of luck with your latest chapter in Portugal where you can be closer to family.
Thank you for the wishes!
Loved all your videos. It was great to hear an objective view of China from a non-Chinese who actually lives in China. But your life takes priority and sometimes it may take you to different places. Wishing you and Yvonn all the best in Portugal.
Thank you. You are right, life takes priority and leaving on good terms is the best way to leave. We can always come back to travel because we still like it here.
Wish you and Yvon a continued Success. We will surely miss you. please keep up the good work and keep being a good and honest person. God bless you

All the best for your next endeavor in Porutgal. You guys gave us eye opening great information about China. Thank you guys once again.
Thank you for watching and for the wishes.
All the best to your next journey. Appreciate your honesty and openness! Just realize that you were in my home town Shaoxin!
Thank you. Yvon and I met in Shaoxing back in 2010!
it can be quite difficult for foreigners to stay in China long-term, possibly because China is not traditionally an immigration country. Every advantage comes with its disadvantages. Thank you for your honesty; you are a good couple! We welcome you to come back and visit China in the future. hope for the peace in the world.
Have a safe journey!! I wish you well!!
Thank you!!
Best of luck in the future mate. Hope our paths cross at some point in Europe!
Yes, if you are every around let me know and we can meet up. I have never been to the UK, so who knows, maybe I will fancy a little weekend trip.
Good luck with your new adventure.
Thank you!
The house in Portugal looks BEAUTIFUL, and the land looks terrific. I live on a farm myself, and came here from New York City, almost 20 years ago. I suspect you'll have lots of very entertaining adventures - city slickers in the country always do!
Plz let me live in Portugual forever or Norway
Yes, the house is really beautiful.... It will need a lot of work, but that is what we wanted and what we are looking forward to. I'm sure the learning curve will be hard, but we are up for the adventure and hopefully these city slickers can figure it out!
@@TripBitten I'm sure you will! Just don't be surprised if you occasionally find yourself craving good restaurants and stores selling fashionable shoes . . .

All the best to you. I lived in Hong Kong for 12 year, and I will be leaving HK in a few months. Like you, I longed to own a house with a big garden, which is not possible in HK except for the ultra rich. So I am moving to Malaysia where I grew up, sort of like a completing the full circle, Malaysia --> UK --> HK --> Malaysia. At a fraction of the HK price, I get to own a 3000 sq ft house with 4000 sq ft garden, in a secured estate. Please continue this channel, as I am sure lots of people are interested to see how you and Yvon get on in Portugal.
The property markets can be a little crazy, especially when you want land to garden or farm. Sounds like you found a nice place in Malaysia. Hopefully, our place will also work out well for us! Thanks for the wishes.
wish you all the best! we chinese love those honest person who speak the truth like you!❤❤
Thank you!
Welcome back all the time, enjoy the next journey
Thank you. We hope to come back and visit from time to time!
Sorry to hear that
All the best. Hope to see more of your videos.
Thank you. I will continue to post videos in the future.
Good luck with your move! I was way late to finding your channel, but looking forward to hearing about your experience in Portugal. Do you have any videos where you touch on how China has dealt/deals with homelessness?
Good luck and have a wonderful life in Portugal!
Thank you
Good luck and Godspeed on your future and adventures.
Thank you!
Best of luck to you both. Looking forward to seeing you in your new rustic life !
It will be a big change, but I think we will enjoy it a lot. Only time will tell.

@@TripBitten The sooner China beat US in global leadership and economic supremacy , the better chance for everyone else in the world to live in peace and prosperity.
With the things are going in America, it is no longer a real democracy.
Good luck in Portugal 😊, I am in Brussel , but I have freinds living in Portugal ...
Thank you for this video , it true I have been following you for months now , and was quite surprised, that you were leaving China
🙏☺
It was a hard decision to make, but like I said in the video, better to leave on good terms. It might be a little surprising, but we have been thinking about it for sometime now. That is the problem with one-sided videos, it is hard to share everything. Thank you for following along for the last few months and hopefully you will stick around.
Good luck to you & wife for your new journey and found a place in this world that suitable for you eventually!
Thank you for the wishes!
All the best for the new beginning 👍
Thank you
We love your informative video on China and learnt so much in this era of misinformation. Thank you for all you do and wishing you all the best in your new venture.
Thank you
All the very best to you and Yvon in your new phase of life. Ignore negative comments. Afterall, it is your life not theirs. Live the way and where you like.
Thank you and good advice. It is our lives to live and we should do what is best for us.
Wish you luck! Yes show your house and the animals and the farm and the seasons. It's going to be very nice in Portugal. My sis in-law and her partner wanted to stay there but finally they went to Thailand .
I will show all the adventures on the farm! Portugal is very nice and hopefully we can enjoy it. Thanks for the wishes.
Totally understand and so many unperceivable situation since US and China tension been spiraling downward. Good luck on ur stay in Portugal and you can always come back to China to visit.
Thank you!
Respect. Glad you guys are making decisions to get what you want in life and I'm sure there will always be ways to go visit China in case you miss anything there!
Recently, China has changed some of the visa free entry laws, which means Yvon can come back for 15 days anytime she wants and if I get Portuguese citizenship, I will also be able to come. So, hopefully in the future we can come back to visit easily.
All the best !
Thank you
I totally understand, wish all the best on your future endeavors.
Thank you
Good Luck on your new Adventure..!!
Thank you!
You are going to love your new life. Can’t wait to follow your journey.
We are really excited and hope everything will work out well for us! Thanks for the encouragement and for following along. We have a lot of videos planned and hopefully people will like the new content.
So excited for your new adventure. Wishing you all the best. Would u change the topic to Portugal?
Thanks for the wishes. I plan to continue the same topic about China and the world. I might focus a little more on China and Europe, but the videos hopefully won't change too much.
Actually I am very interested about Portugal and the journey of your dream setting up a small farm. Either way I think what ever topic u create, you have done it objectively and I think that’s a plus of your channel.
More power to you guys. I'll be watching your next life style.
Thank you!
man, i wish you happy journey, i really like of your on the ground report and view on china. there are good and different in each country, i'm chinese. we chinese have our cultures but at least we are honest and don't talk behind your back after you leave us. unlike the japanese all politte and rituals but they jugde you after you leave.
good luck fella.
Sad day for chinese people a great loss.. of a good friend. I hope you can travel back and forward. china is a great place to buy and sell stuffs.
Yes, it is bitter sweet, because we still like China. But, I think it is important to move on when you are ready and to not become bitter or hateful towards China. We are grateful for our time here and will travel back in the future.
You have money to buy property or job ready for you there new place for you? Portugal seem no future nor good job that's why lot Portuguese left there for rest of the world for better live even in Asia China Thailand Indonesia Hong Kong.
@@yuegonghuamei6685a recent study that shown happiest population among all the country in the globe is Portugal, Netherland and Iceland but do take it with huge pinch of salt because China has been leading the past 3 years suddenly gone from the top 3/5/10 ranking. If one person decided to leave, they can have more than hundred reason and excuses. I bet alot of expat who left went back to their home country and migrated to somewhere else did not take consideration into current global inflation and energy crisis.
Moving to Europe is definitely a weird choice because they are facing 3x fold of energy price. The strong USD is crashing every country economies, if their new country doesn't have a complete supply chain or cheap gas/energy, everything is heading south.
If China and U.S tension lead to direct conflict, do y'all really think living in Portugal won't get affected? Huh😅
Good freaking luck.
Best wishes for your future life
Thank you
Best wishes to your new life ahead.
Thanks!
wish you all the best🎉
In some ways, not the Visa part, it's why after living in NYC in the 80's (I was also born there), I needed to get to more green. Got as far as Berkeley with easy access to the hills, but then after more years (a couple in Mexico), I've ended up in the ranch lands of SE AZ about 10 mi N of MX border. Thanks for all your helpful videos on China. Much appreciated. Best wishes for your new life in Portugal. (My cousin and partner live in rural Portugal but can't recall name of town. They're very happy there.)
I think it is normal to move around and try new things. Seems like you found a good place for yourself. Hopefully Portugal will be good for us. Thanks for the wishes.
Fully understand your concerns and your decision. I’m facing a similar situation and I’m trying to go back China after living in the USA for almost 30 years. My parents and in-laws are approaching 90 I just can’t afford the super long trip back to them if something happens.
Family is always important, so it make sense. Good luck with your journey and thanks for the comment.
What you said makes a lot of sense. Good luck!
Big change. Go well. I will continue to follow your journey.
Thank you so much!
All the best with your journey

Foreigners buying properties has more conditions than Chinese but not that difficult. Many foreigners have bought properties. It is true that first tier cities in China are expensive just like New York, London, Tokyo etc. Furthermore, landed houses are even more expensive in first tier cities in China as compared to apartments. A change to landed house is good. All the best to your endeavor 💪✌️.
Thank you.
Good luck for your future wishes.
Thank you
Nice house. Looking forward to the new house tour video
The house is nice, but will need a lot of work. I will share the tour once we have filmed it.
Randomly came cross your video. You sound like a reasonable dude. Good luck on your next journey.

it's quite understandable for you to move to Portugal due to your dilemma in buying a house in china and other considerations. thanks to you for presenting china in a positive way. looking forward to more videos about your future idyllic life in Portugal.
Thank you for the wishes!
All the best to Trip Bitten couple and thank you for your videos about China. I was a foreigner in another country and enjoyed the hospitality and economic opportunities given to me. I have no illusions why I should be treated equally like native local people and enjoyed whatever was available to me. As I grew older, I returned to my native country and enjoyed the positive differences while accepting the negatives compared to the foreign land.
Waaauuu, I must say you got the wisdom of life❤
Yes, I think it comes with seasons. When you are young it is good to explore the world and learn about yourself and how the world works. But, over time, it is okay to change and have different needs/wants. Hopefully, this move will be good for us and we can continue to live well. Thanks for the wishes.
Wish you the best! I will continue to follow you.
