I think Joe knows the character and he’s not wrong about him.
Ofc he’s not wrong, he personified this character and his character thoughts and motives are exactly the thoughts and motives he wanted this character to have (probably with some guidance from director as well)
So that’s the closest to the fact we can get
Bing! Whataya doin’ here?!
Yep, he's a straight up psychopath. Not at all funny.
He's definitely accurate because my uncle went to John Adams highschool with the real Tommy Desimone. Unc used to say that he always made everyone nervous yet charismatic just like the character on the "funny how scene"
He said Pesci looked nothing like Tommy however he definitely acted and sounded identical to him. They used to also gamble together at a place called Sinatra club in their early 20s. If unc was still living he'd be 75 so pesci is definitely right about the character because he was channeling the real Desimone there. Who was a funny homicidal maniac in real life who was obsessed with controlling the room according to all stories that I heard about him.
The character was funny for yhe wrong reasons cause you are flabbergasted how much of a psychopath he was. Even a scary serial killer like Buffalo Bill was unintentionally funny.
Joe Pesci nailed it on the head. Tommy wasn't funny. He was a psychopath, and people only laughed at his dumb jokes to placate him and keep him from going crazy.
100%
And to not be the target of his fury.
They laughed because they were scared of him. They knew he could win a fair fight, so he would fight dirty when someone was down or hit them from behind
@@mattwiley4530the real Tommy was a big scary guy, Joe was far from that. The funny part was anyone believing that character was tough, nobody is scared of a dwarf!😂
@@tedk2166i think you watch a lot of movies and never met really short bad guys. You’d be scared. No matter how tough you think you are.
One of my mom’s older brothers was Pesci’s next door neighbor on Long Island for over 30 years. After Goodfellas was released, he personally came over to a gathering and apologized to my uncle for the racist language he used throughout that movie. My uncle said he had known him for 10 years prior to the movie and understood it was just a role he was playing. Only met Joe once, on Christmas 1994, and he was the coolest dude ever.

The statement he’s making is only one that can be made if you’ve spent a considerable amount of time amongst guys like that. It’s that they have funny bones, they love to laugh and joke but you have to pick and choose the timing and if it isn’t right, they’re going to drag you into a dark corner and THEN they’ll turn it into a joke, because they decided to. Not because you made a joke of them.
That was such a tense moment in that scene😮😅 R.I.P Ray Liotta

You may fold under questioning one day Henry. ❤😂 It did happen eventually. Well played Joe and Ray. The two of them did that scene adlib. It wasn't in the original script. One of the three best mafia movies ever in my opinion. Godfather 1, and part 2, being the first two. 😊
@@stanleybochenek1862hahahaha so funny comment
This is why Joe Pesci played these characters so well he never once tired to glamorize them he made their flaws very obvious a lot of guys do these gangster movies and they want to be billy badass or they want to be a good guy every single gangster Pesci ever played was a irredeemable bad guy who got his often times by being outsmarted
BINGO! You perfectly described how he played all of those villains! The contrast is even present in My Cousin Vinny where he plays a stereotypical Italian-American without any of the horrifying stuff from the gangster roles and he is freaking adorable…but when he turns on the horror factor, we know he is not playing the good guy. He even managed to play a PG bag guy in the Home Alone movies without the cussing, but we all knew he was a bad person who deserved whatever punishment was dished out.
@@hithere4719his character in Home Alone was kinda terrifying. Showing up as a cop at the beginning, threatening to bite off a child’s fingers by the end. Such a great performer
@@charliethegent In hindsight the movie was made for parents to share the Fear Of Pesci with their children for Christmas. I know my Dad would have loved to be like “Boys, check out this crazy movie Goodfellas! This guy is like the devil, he’s nuts!”, but Mom wouldn’t let that happen.
I meant to say that Home Alone was definitely on Pesci’s list of scary movies. He played violent characters before, but the specific plot of going after a young boy could only be played out in a kid’s movie where the kid wins….I mean Pesci can go dark, but I don’t think anyone would produce an R-rated film about a a criminal duo going after a kid, and winning 😬
PS: Happy Halloween 🎃
Listen to his gangsta rap. He absolutely glamorises those characters.
He is a phenomenal actor all around! I love Goodfellas and Casino tough lol
The first time I watch this movie that scene sticks out because I remember feeling awkward and not knowing if things would go left, then laughing but more of a nervous relief laugh. Only great actors can summon those feelings in the audience, it’s great!

@@user-dj9iu2et3r also some bad people aren't really insecure, it is misconception that someone who is aggresive must be insecure (im not saying this specific character isn't). People who suddenly blow and get aggresive can do so for many reasons, some simply wants to rule everyone and made everyone be afraid of them which is kinda twisted sense of self respect, they can do so out o their ego and out of treating themselves as only authority that is. If you for example would make someone like Putin feel that you don't resect him then he could order to kill you, not because he is insecure but because he would think that how dare some small peasant think he is anywhere his level and dare to say stuff that only he can do without consequences, this have anything to do with insecurity in that case.

One of the great actors of our times. The guy can play Tommy in Goodfellas, and Leo in Lethal Weapon. Great talent!
It’s a power play. There is no moment more cathartic than when Tommy finally gets what’s coming to him. The film is one of the best anti-crime films ever made because it’s all fun and style and Bam everyone’s either dead or behind bars. As someone who was in the situation similar to what Henry was in, Tommy was not playing, that could've easily ended up in a fight, and i mean VERY easily. Joe Pesci knows this too because he got the scene from something that actually happened to him.
“You play when I want you to play” that’s tough right there.

Tell me as much as you want "there are still mobsters out there" cool maybe a handful, but not nearly as much as old Italian men seem to think there 😂 and so, these little guys were scary in a time when everyone was also tiny and untrained in combat sports.
