    He’s not saying method acting is absurd but the nature of acting in and of itself is an absurd thing that becomes more apparent as you age and why method acting is more necessary to get over that feeling.

    • @MrValsung
      @MrValsung Před 6 měsíci +2

      I have always felt as though pretending that actors can 'become' someone else purely through imagination to be an absurd notion, especially since an individual person isn't even capable of truly understanding oneself! -- Without the aid of others, external experiences, & reflecting on past behavior-- and even that is quite a diluted or 'corrupt' slice of comprehension. That fact alone has always demolished the paradigm of acting as 'becoming' to be entirely invalid in my eyes.
      I haven't seen the whole clip, so DDL prolly did say something closer to what you're getting at. I will say though, method acting is quite absurd outside of the premise I provided above, and I think what DDL says in this snippet of an interview does a pretty good job demonstrating that in less ephemeral, more semantic terms than what I provided.
      Just the fact alone that you become cognizant to other entities in the 'world' - the movie in this case - is the primary means of 'activating' them for lack of a better word already demonstrates the flaws of perfectly immersing oneself into the role of a character. Followed up by his other point that what you've already performed on previous sessions affects what your performance will be. The genuine article vis a vis a true reaction to stimuli, that is experienced in 'real life' is diluted more and more as multiple takes are requested.
      Overall, I would say that like most forms of expression, the validity of method acting as a concept comes into focus when we approximate the defining characteristics of its theory; with the precise manner to which successful actors execute in their practice -- ultimately leading to a recursive 'dance' between the two ad infintum. DDL's explanation of play probably contributes to a greater approximation of the term if we take into account the psychology of play -- a concept that I am not familiar with; otherwise, I would reply with a reflection on that in relation to what it is "we" hope to attain from the act of acting.

      @@TonyMarselle i think due to your inability to be 'longwinded' your posit: "ego and reach the flow state" is taken as a given. there is little to no scrutiny on whether or not those particular concepts - or the combination thereof - actually apply to the nature of acting as a whole; or even if these can be considered small components of a greater explanation on the subject. i would say your sentiment bewilders me, if it wasn't so common. the entire purpose of theory is to essentially predict and replicate phenomenon as accurately as possible. no one told you to parse scrawls of html scribbles on the device of your choice; or to muster the faculties required to type up a response on how exhausting it is for others to attempt to provide one. the more one overthinks what you bothered to do here, the more bizarre what it is you THINK you're accomplishing here becomes. have a blessed day bruhv.

    Daniel Day-Lewis's portrayal in "There Will Be Blood" is nothing short of mesmerizing. His performance as Daniel Plainview is a masterclass in acting, immersing viewers into the complex psyche of a ruthless oil prospector consumed by ambition and greed. Day-Lewis brings an unparalleled intensity to the role, commanding every scene with his magnetic presence and unwavering commitment to character. His ability to convey a wide range of emotions, from cunning manipulation to profound loneliness, is truly remarkable. Through his nuanced performance, Day-Lewis elevates the film into a gripping exploration of power, capitalism, and the dark depths of the human soul. It's no wonder that his portrayal has cemented itself as one of the most iconic in cinematic history, earning him a well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actor. Daniel Day-Lewis's dedication to his craft shines through in every frame of "There Will Be Blood," leaving an indelible mark on audiences and solidifying his status as one of the greatest actors of our time.
