      Knowing that they had no script for Iron Man and had to make it up as they went along, there is no way that that film should be as tight as it is. Just a small detail that I didn't even notice first time I watched it is when Pepper Potts is searching for the new suit that Obadiah Stane has had built, she finds Mk1 first, saying that it isn't very impressive. That is a great little detail that you normally see in a script that has gone through countless revisions.
      It also looks great considering how much older hardware and software was compared to most Marvel movies. I still think it's the best Marvel movie.

      what's wild is that it is so timeless, despite being completely of its time and place. it takes place during that little swing revival in the 90's and revolves around actors of a certain age and disposition you could really only find in LA., plus that cruising with your posse attitude is almost a cultural relic. it comes off as a period piece full of quirks, but the situations and characters are so weirdly relatable that it's a complete blast.

    • @matthewpeterson3329
      @matthewpeterson3329 Před 3 měsíci +14

      Amen! A few years before this movie came out, a small group of close friends and I found ourselves suddenly single at the same time, for no particularly similar reason. We were all between 21 and 24 years old and had steady girlfriends since before we were legal drinking age. The timing was uncanny, and we spent a few years partying together around San Diego, going to the same bars and pool halls and hangouts, mostly places that had local live music. We got to know all the doormen, bartenders, regulars, and made friends with some of the bands. When Swingers came out, one of the guys called and said, "Dude, you gotta go see this movie... it's gonna feel really familiar". Your comment about young adult male friendship was spot on.

    • @TheSuperappelflap
      @TheSuperappelflap Před 2 měsíci +1

      Its a movie about a bunch of guys partying, drinking and trying to get laid. Theres more to friendship than that. This is a superficial caricature of friendship.

    • @matthewpeterson3329
      @matthewpeterson3329 Před 2 měsíci +4

      @@TheSuperappelflap Yep, exactly what most single guys in their early twenties do, or did in the 90's. It might be a caricature, exaggerated slightly for the sake of fitting weeks or months of activity into a two hour window, but not superficial. And I would add that it was not necessarily about trying to get laid, but meeting women in general, and spending time with friends with the same goal. Finding someone you are attracted to, having the nerve to approach, investing enough time in a conversation to see if the person interests you beyond their appearance, and the awkward game of being genuine while also trying to put your best foot forward, is exactly how dating begins at ANY age. Nobody is as comfortable with a newly met person as they are once they've known each other a little while and all the armor is dropped. You wouldn't act the same in front of a new coworker as you would in front of your friends... friendships and relationships are seasoned with time, and hopefully the personality oddities that EVERYONE possess are endearing enough to move forward. And women have all the leverage, especially attractive women. It's rare for a woman to approach a man unless there is an immediate physical attraction, and it's rare for a man to dismiss a woman unless there is no physical attraction. The men nearly always have to make the first move, and that takes guts. This movie hits on all cylinders for most young men, especially at that time, because it is played from their perspective. Today, with online dating, you have a dossier of information before you ever meet. It's literally a cheat code. You never have to put in the work. That's kinda sad.

    • @TheSuperappelflap
      @TheSuperappelflap Před 2 měsíci

      @@matthewpeterson3329 The problem is that these movies only focus on the fun side of a friendship. While friendships are formed and cemented through overcoming tough times. When I was in my twenties, I had to study, I had to work a job on the side, after college I had to work full-time and commute for two hours a day, studying in the evenings for certifications. I didn't have time to go party or take roadtrips. A friend of mine killed himself and the rest of us, left behind, had to come to terms with that. That's how my friendships that last to this day were formed. Through overcoming our grief and loss and anger together.
      I never had a fun party phase like these movies show. It seems like a shallow and boring existence to me. Nothing about it seems real. I'm glad I spent my time on a real life and real friends instead.

    This is one of my favorite “how it got made on a shoestring and a prayer” Hollywood classic film stories ever. I had never seen anything like it when it came out, and after watching it again recently it’s still just as good as I remembered. The cast, script, and filming are perfection-I cringe when I think of how it would have turned out had Favreau given it to someone else to make.

    I'm happy you made this. Swingers hit the Zeitgeist of the moment. It's one of my favorite movies that I felt I could identify with the experiences of the characters within the film. Also, the film has sooo many great one liners. I remember traveling to LA for the first time repeating one liners from the film to friends.

    Loved this video, my man. I've probably done the "You're like a big bear, man!" speech more times than I'd admit, but I knew almost nothing about the making of it (apart from the fact that you can apparently hear sirens in some takes that are from cops coming to arrest them for filming illegally). Beautifully put together.

    Pretty incredible to think how impactful some people can be on the lives of so many. I'm not always too thrilled by the big, noisy 'blockbuster' films these days, but someone like Favreau really seems like he's experienced enough of lives ups and downs that he's able to couple that with genuine intuition about how to entertain. Not too surprising that you can take someone like that, let them take calculated risks and voila; a mighty impressive career.
