Random: How To Make Pedal Straps

- Learn how to make custom pedal straps for your single speed or fixed gear bicycle. I use common parts and tools to build these straps.
Tools list:
3/8" drill bit
drill
hack saw or jig saw with metal cutting blade (or milling machine?)
sewing machine
optional - files, sandpaper, clamp or bench vise to hold work piece while cutting.
TIP: cutting the holes in the stock first makes it easier to hold the stock. After holes are cut, then cut the buckles to length.
Parts List:
Aluminum stock or steel stock for buckle 1/8" x 3/4" x 6" (steel can be thinner at 1/16")
Buckle dimensions - 2, 3/8" x 3/4"
Cordura fabric or fabric of your choice - 2 pieces - 15" x 4"
Large velcro hook side - 2 pieces - 13" x 2"
Nylon webbing - 4 pieces - 24" x 3/4"
Velcro loop side - 4 pieces - 12" x 3/4"

Regarding that double-sided extra piece: I believe there are two main design variations of the straps - one that stays together along the whole length but can't be adjusted with one hand while riding, and one that can be tightened or loosened by just pulling on the loose end and undoing one side of the velcro but it doesn't keep its shape as nicely. By inserting that piece you make the second type work like the first one. If adjusting on the go is not needed, one could ditch the fiddly buckle, make the wide part in two pieces and sew the ends of straps between the ends of the halves.

Awesome video! I love people who make these easy to follow tutorials that get right to the point but still give you everything you need to know. What kind of specialized pedals were in the video? I saw the twisted Odyssey, but those specialized pedals looked cooler.
You will also find that white spirit, turps substitute or paraffin are good for cutting and threading aluminium and its various alloys.

WOW! I've been machining for over twenty years making tooling jig and fixtures and have made pieces for my cyclist friends, mostly head set spacer rings and custom risers and any other custom Ideas they'd have...but I had no idea that people were making their own bike jigs, and you my friend...wow! your vids are very informative and filled with content, and your machining skills, I have to admit it made me a little apprehensive but when i saw where you were going with your process, I WAS PROUD IT WORKED! I liked your videos so much I subscribed, Now I'm going to binge watch all of your vids to catch up. Really like your videos! You follow through with projects most of us only think about. A few thoughts on this one.
First, I would put the bracket on the outside so as not to scratch the crank arm. I also wonder if the aluminium is strong enough to withstand abuse. Good stuff.
I didn't think of the buckle on the other side. I did it on the inside because this is what the major brands do with their straps. For the rubbing, the buckle doesn't make contact but the fabric part does. This particular set was made for a buddy of mine and his bike (along with the straps were stolen) shortly after I gave them to him. I have another set of straps made the same way on my daily commuter and the buckle is still strong and going. Thanks for watching!

excellent work my dude. i'm designing a pair of straps right now and i have a couple buckles sitting around that would fit these perfectly. one question tho, how's the velcro held up? i guess since it's not constantly taken on and off like gloves or something so it should last quite a while but has it shown any signs of loosening?

While I appreciate the video, I can't help but feel the integrity of the Odyssey Twisted pedals have been compromised by removing the 2 sections you cut out.
They were designed and made that way for a reason.
Odyssey has other pedals that won't require this adjustment.
I simply folded my Hold Fast straps and fed them through the smaller holes on my Twisted Blueberry pedals, then flattened them out.
Works great.

pros and cons of using the large part as "Hook" and 2 smaller ones as "loop" versus doing alternatively Hook and loop for each side and then hook and loop for the 2 smaller ones ?

meg oriold Hi Meg, It's either a #14 or 16. I really should have used something larger and thicker thread. Would have reduced the thread breakage. Kind of off topic but related. The friend I made the straps for had his bicycle stolen along with the straps you see in the video :(

It's very difficult to get straps in Austrlalia, especially anything nice. I bought some Welgo straps for $20, but there isn't much else except imported straps which cost $80+
In Canada and the States, these pedal straps generally cost around $30 - $80 from a bike shop. That's why.

I'm confused. You said you were making a "custom" set of straps. You have skills, but all you did was copy/steal someone's product. What is custom about that? I know there are people are going to freak about this, but if I cared about that. I wouldn't post it.
