- My son and I love to go fishing. We didn't have a boat, so one day I came home with this clunker for us to restore. We stripped it down and customized it over the course of a couple weeks as time permitted. We think we did a pretty good job.

Enjoy time with him, he will miss it one day, wish I could go fishing with my dad, but he’s gone on.
One of the best CZcams videos iv'e seen. There is NOTHING like being a dad and spending time with your son (or sons in my case)...great job, Wish you guys the best.
shade3588 Thank you. I agree, and I feel very lucky to have such a great son.
Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it. I'm going to be starting a restoration/modification of my late Dads 16' 1976 Mirro-Craft Deep Fisherman soon. I just looked her over today and she's looking good except for the bench seats, which are a mess. We did a lot of salt water fishing in it, and I had modified it like Tim Coleman( the late New England Fisherman editor) recommended in his book, To Catch A Bass.
Now she's going to be a freshwater fly-fishing platform. Looking forward to making casting decks and you gave me some good ideas. I had a few laughs about Nicks hard work and Dads comments. Trailer work is exactly as described! Nice to see you represent Massachusetts so well. Us sportsmen here work for everything we get!
Good luck with your project and thanks for the comments!
Well done Nick!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Only if my 14 yr old son can do half of what you did.
Most kids these day spend way too much time in front of computers rather than appreciating the outdoors.
Cheers!
I am just finishing my 1955 Larson 14' boat I bought for 300.00 w/ trailer . Nice job on your boat
GREAT JOB GUYS!!!!! every other video i searched only had the first part.... the strip down.... never had a finish video of there boats. This is my favorite video on youtube
You two could have your very own reality show, great job on the boat...
crambgonz1 Haha thanks!
Good father! Good son!
Looks like Nick is going to turn out OK. Good job Dad and Mom.
I inherited my grandfather's Starcraft a few years ago and it's been sitting in my garage getting drier and drier. Pretty much identical to this one. I've been kicking around the idea of restoring it and modding it out for a while now. Your video gave me the inspiration to get her back in the water. Hat's off.
That's really awesome...thanks for the nice comment, and good luck with your boat!
Good work on the boat! Funny video, good tunes and well put together. I've watched this many times. I just bought a 14 ft Starcraft. I gathered some ideas for my boat. Thanks!
newenglandartiste Thanks for the comments! Good luck with your boat, and let me know if you post a video of the work you do to it.
to say that Nick like to fish is an understatement judging by the hard work he put into it...you got a good kid there! keep up the good work
Thank you, and I agree!
My father had that same boat for about ten years from the mid 1970s to 1984. We caught thousands of fish out of it. Congratulations on a great job. I'm impressed with Nick's work.
Thanks for the comments.
Hell yeah buddy great job. Look into the aluminum angle for the framing I was telling you about. I’m gonna do the same 🤙🏽🎣
Thanks Drew! Keep me posted on your boat project! 🎣
You had me chuckling, great video thank you for putting this together.
Great stuff! Just picked up a 14ft of my own. Time to get to work!
Great father and son project! Job well done guys!
Great job guys!!!! Looks like a great project and I really appreciated the Albert Collins..
Such a wonderful experience to share together. Great Job Nick, and Dad. Your Humor had me rolling in laughter and gave me the drive to finish my 13ft valco. thankyou for sharing this video !!
Thank you! We had a blast. Good luck with your boat!
Great vid but I highly recommend adding some type of foam to the deck for reserve buoyancy
Nice little boat. I got a 14 foot V hull and I love it.
Awesome job young man!
That was very entertaining to watch. Good job restoring it and funny commentary too. You guys have made and will be making many memories to come.
Thanks, we appreciate it. Climbing into that boat for another few hours of fishing and laughs never gets old.

Now, you know hot to do. ;)
good job on the restoration! this video gave me a good idea of how to restore my grandpa's old 1964 StarCraft 14ft. thanks!
Thank you! Good luck with your grandpa's boat!
heck of a nice job man.nice fish too.
This is the most fun to watch and best video, i must have watched it so many times. Great work.
Thank you for watching and commenting. We're glad you enjoyed it.
Well done!! Thanks for sharing.
Great Job ! Half the fun in fishing is getting there! Looks Great Guys, nice teamwork.
Thanks!
Enjoyed this video. My son and I are about to start a restore on our own StarCraft. Inspiring. Nice work!
SonBoogie Very cool! No doubt that you'll enjoy the project as much as if not more than the finished product. I'd love to see how it all comes out.
Freshwater topwater fishing is one of my favorites...maybe my favorite.
Cool project. Boat looks ship shape.
Thank you for watching and for the comments.
looks pretty good, just did this last summer to a 16' sea nymph with a Evinrude 50 on back. all the platforms/plywood was rotting out of it, the entire back was caked in dirt and slime. bought it for 1200, replace the lower unit in the motor for 900 and redid all the plywood and carpeting. turned it from a 1200 boat to a 4500 in just one summer and a little bit of money, and know how. you do a great job showing your steps.
Turned out nice !
Nice job young man.
Great Video Guys
Awesome video
Well done, I am preparing to tackle restoration of my recently acquired 12' Alumacraft V hull. I have plans to set it up for waterfowl hunting for myself. Great video!
Thank you, and best of luck with your project!
I had the exact same boat with a 25 Johnson on it , great boat . We fished the west coast of Vancouver island ( Bamfield ) not 1 drop of water in the boat , very sea worthy !
Great job Nick!
Ben Hays Thanks!
Good job guys,
Real nice video. Would love to do something like that with my son. I have a Smokercraft 14 foot boat that is in need of work (trailer too). Will use this in making some nice upgrades to her. Thanks for the enjoyment. Nick will never forget this time with you.
Thank you for the nice comments! Good luck!
Great video!
Thanks!
Thank you very much! I appreciate the nice comment. I'm certainly no painting expert...I just Googled a few things about painting aluminum boats, and tried to follow the instructions on the cans. From what I remember, we:
1. Scraped off all of the old stickers and any loose paint with scrapers and wire brushes.
2. Scuffed up whatever remained, then cleaned it all with denatured alcohol.
3. Primed it with Rustoleum Self Etching Primer.
4. Painted it with Rustoleum Satin Enamel.
No issues yet!
man look good and nice painting
Very nice Job! Thats what its all about, just keep fishin. :-)
So............ 8 years later......... Update? Nick still ramblin' 'round in the ol Starcraft? rebuild? mods? sold? :) Me n my son redoin' one now , stumbled on this vid, lol :) Happy Holidays 2021
Yeah time sure flies! Nick is now 25 and owns his own small house on a lake. The boat is still in good shape, and we moved it to his place last year but unfortunately neither us use it nearly as much as we used to. We're both expecting to get more fishing in this year though! Thanks for watching and commenting, and good luck with your project!
I have the same boat ,, same color,, and my sons name is Nick ! Im not kidding :-) good vid.
I couldn't agree more. Thank you.
Thank you very much. It was a fun project.
Looks like my driveway. Don't get on your knees or walk barefoot on it. Lol. Good video
Great vid thanks
Haha yeah...definitely not a record-breaker. He's caught a bunch of monsters since then. Thanks for watching!
Awesome.
Let's see...I already had a bunch of this stuff, but we needed: denatured alcohol, primer, paint, 2x4's, 1/2" plywood, fiberglass resin, carpet, adhesive, wood for the bench seats, polyurethane, battery box, battery, circuit breaker, trolling motor, heavy duty jumper cables (with the ends cut off to use as the extension from the battery to a terminal block at the back of the boat for the trolling motor), swivel seats, life jackets, trailer lights, tires, boat cover. Altogether, about $800.
Just an FYI for those who do one of these projects. If you're able to keep the old boards in 1 piece and are going to be putting new wood where you removed it
Do it. They work as great templates to trace from. Oh, and for using rattle cans, get one of those snap on spray can gun handles; they'll save your fingers so much soreness! I'm speaking from personal experience! 😁😁😁
Good suggestions!
Gonna do something like this with my row boat. I got a 12ft starcraft, 16in gunnel
Well, you did it Nick. I don't think there's another vid on the web better 'an this one. Got some chuckles too. The outcome of hard work and stick-to-it-ness has paid off big time. Nick, enjoy these times with the old man; you are lucky, both of you. Just rehabed my 14' Appleby and plan on doing about the same as you on the identical boat sitting out back. You mentioned not having the ID plate. Was it difficult to get it registered as the one I have doesn't have one. Bought it off a junk truck on the way to the junky. Good luck and I'll be watching for more videos. Nice job.
SeeMooreVids Thanks for the comments! We had no problem registering it, as it came with all the original paperwork from the previous owner. He even had the manuals for the Gator trailer and the Gamefisher outboard, which were pretty useful. Good luck with your boat!
Kid should run a boat yard or a marina someday, I'll bet he would enjoy it and be great at it too. What is he interested in?
Very nice, i'm doing somethin similar to my boat
nothing like father and son time
Damn good rebuild Nick, now if we could just get the camera man to stop dancing to the music! Hope you guys enjoy the new boat, nice job.
I have the same boat and trailer and it looks similar to yours (e.g., colors for both, boat and trailer). I had to do some restoration, but not as bad as yours.
Nice job! "Nick" LOL
looks great! what wood did you use for the tops of your benches? I am missing all the metal and styrofoam in mine :(
That video was awesome! What were your steps to repainting the boat?
how do you keep both stable keep it from tipping
wish my boat looked that good before restoration
Nick wasn't playin' games with that paint at about 5:20... lol
No kidding! haha
17:10 the man with the funny commentary
looked like it was all rotted... nice job
Where abouts in mass are you guys located? I'm located in Orleans, MA (Cape Cod)
hey bud what type of paint you use on your boat an is it expensive to buy?
Hmm sounds like something I could do. What did it cost you to make all the changes to the boat?
This was a great video! I have 1959 14' Crestliner Commodore. I plan on doing the same with my son. Definitely going to vlog it also. How long di you think it took, from start to finish?
Thank you! I'd say it took us about 3 or 4 weekends of puttering around with it, give or take. Good luck with yours!
Great Video. I have a boat I am working on that is almost identical to yours. Did the 15hp gamefisher even work?
Thanks! I still haven't actually tried running the motor yet. We ended up getting a trolling motor, which is plenty for the small lakes and ponds we normally fish around here. I do want to get it (or at least try to get it) running so that we can take the boat out on some bigger lakes and rivers. Maybe I'll make a video of that project! haha
Great job man im trying to build a deck on my boat too, how heavy do u think all the wood made ur boat?
Thank you! The wood did add a lot of weight, especially at the front end where the battery is. I would guess that between the sheet of plywood, the carpet, the lumber, and the battery, we added about 180-200 lbs. Then add a trolling motor, two guys, and some gear. Looking back, we probably should have looked at using extruded aluminum for the framing, although I'm not really sure how much weight it would have saved. Maybe 30 lbs? One good thing, though is that it's like a barge when it's windy, and doesn't drift around at all. haha! We have a 55 lb. thrust trolling motor, which has plenty of giddy-up-and-go for around 5 or 6 hours with two guys in the boat before it starts to lose steam. Definitely won't be pulling any water skiers, though. Hope that info helps some. Good luck with your boat!
What type of paint, and primer did you use ? I'm starting my project this winter
***** We scraped off as much of the original paint as we could, then cleaned the surface with denatured alcohol. After that, we sprayed it with Rustoleum Self Etching Primer and then Rustoleum Satin Enamel topcoat. It's still holding up really well. Thanks for watching and good luck with your project!
Nice job! Any issues with center of gravity?
Justin S Thanks! The bow does sit a little low whenever my 250 lb. buddy comes aboard and is fishing right up front, but luckily my 230 lbs. in the back helps even it out. haha Having the battery up front doesn't help, but it's nice having it completely out of the way. Overall there's a lot of weight low in the boat, so it's pretty stable in all directions.
What kind of paint is that?
How stable is the boat standing up I am thinking about buying one or should I go with a 14' Jon boat?
It’s very stable, whether there’s only one person or up to 3 in the boat, even up on the deck in the bow. Probably because it’s so darn heavy. Haha. We’ve never had a tipping issue. Sorry, I don’t know how it compares to a jon boat, I’ve never been in one.
@@PepperJackStudio Thank you
Who really cares that it was only the size of a candy bar?! then you zoom in, man i laughed so hard lollll
The narrative is stupid but the restoration is great
Sorry, man! Great project, and something I would like to do, as well, but I could only get halfway through the video because the jittery and rapid camera movement was making me dizzy. Of course my other half would tell you that I am ALWAYS dizzy, but that would be another story.
Haha yeah, sorry about that. I made myself dizzy too. Thanks for at least trying to watch.
What is the max. H.P. rating for that boat?
I'm not really sure what the max hp rating is...the data plate was missing. I did finally get the 15hp Gamefisher motor working, which was a learning experience all by itself. With all the weight that we added, the fishing gear, and 2 people, it only pushes it around 13 mph. With just one person, it moves around 18 mph. I'm guessing that there's just too much weight for that motor, and that I'd be better with a 25hp motor, but for now I'm happy with this setup. I did order a new prop, since this one is a little beat up. I'm hoping it helps a little, but I'm not expecting much. What I'd really like is to move down from the current 8-1/4 x 12 prop to something with a lot less pitch, since the motor is only turning at 4400 rpm at wide open throttle (should be 5000-6000), but unfortunately, I can't get one that will fit this old motor. Anyway, at the very least, I'll have a spare prop.
+PepperJackStudio I own a 1980 14ft. Starcraft that looks just like yours.I have a 25 HP Electric start Johnson on it. I can even beat some of these personal water crafts with it especially if they have two people on them! Yours should handle a 25 HP with no problem. Great video.
nick can you build me a boat to? lol
What's the name of the song at 11:00?
That's the theme song from The Benny Hill Show.
PepperJackStudio Thanks! I looked for it for a long time with no luck.
Did you really say that "WE" did a good job? LOL
Shaky camera ... I’m bailing out

No room to talk. Were are your professional videos? Oh wait...
