I can relate what he said about the other kids in school making fun of your food. From the time of elementary school to High school I was teased about my home made lunch. It came to the point in junior high that I would not bring my lunch to school as much and just eat school lunch and in high school I skipped lunch all together and would go find some where on campus to eat in private or with one of my true friends. Kids/teens are mean as sh@#!

donna troy I'm sorry those kids were buttholes and bootybothered about what you ate for lunch. If I were at your school I would have wanted to try some.....I've always loved the different cultures of food. I've always been glad that there isn't just one universal style of food.

for kimchi fried rice you just need:
      onions
      oil
      kimchi
      spam
      korean pepper flakes
      dashida (korean msg lol)
Instructions: Oil the pan, put diced onions and cook it until it's translucent-ish, put spam and cook it until you feel satisfied, put kimchi, pepper flakes, dashida, and then rice. I personally do not put in the kimchi liquid purposefully bc it will make the fried rice goopy.

There's nothing like watching someone really get into the flavors, textures and emotions of a good meal. Hearing the crunch of the food, the use of utensils and your bare hands, you unapologetically talk with your mouth full. It's fucking great. You said it best, "food is love." • @AWildAraAppears
    @AWildAraAppears Před 7 lety +58

This looks amazing! I would love to try that.
For me, growing up in South East Texas/South West Louisiana(about 3 minutes over the Texas border), I had a lot of Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Cajun food. Homemade Gumbo, homemade fajitas, Crawfish boils, Fish fries, Tacos(Hard and soft, and a lot of home recipes that we don't have names for that my dad and mom learned from their parents. We had things like Italian pasta dishes often, but my dad was never a big fan of just noodle dishes, so it was usually just a couple times a month.
When we did eat out it was usually at local seafood joints, local pizza joints, or Steak houses.
But the biggest things for me, when I think of the foods I ate as a child and loved above anything where Texas style bbq, and crawfish. Both of these were regular staples of my childhood, but they always felt like special occasions. We'd put on a pot to boil the crawfish or we'd fire up the grill to do some bbq, and we'd invite family and friends over. Every time it was like a big party. We stopped doing it once money got tight, because doing enough crawfish or bbq for 20+ people is super expensive. It would be 200-300$ for 1 day, if not more. What used to be an thing every other weekend became maybe once a year? I really miss those Saturday get-togethers.
I don't have many friends IRL, and I'm pretty anti-social(introverted, anxiety issues, etc.), but one day, I want to make those weekend bbq's a thing again. I want to get all my siblings and their kids and some friends together for no reason in particular, and just enjoy good food together, and enjoy each others company.

White suburban lower-middle class and was lucky to grow up with a mom who cooked fresh stuff every night. Mostly Italian-leaning food. Pastas, rice, soups, stews, casseroles, and sometimes Mexican (California) with burritos, enchiladas, fish tacos, etc. Meat only when we could afford it. It's truly a privilege to have home-cooked meals in your formative years. My brother and I never took it for granted.

I need this kinda food in my life
Like I really need to learn how to cook, cause god damn that shit looks good
I did grow up in a white town, so most of the food I ate at home or restaurants were just basic stuff like burgers, grilled cheese, and restaurants that are like traditional AND Mexican restaurants (like the restaurant would say they had both) that were never really that great but people raved about it. For some reason, I never cared about that food, it was never that great to me
I was always drawn to "weird" looking foods because it actually looked really good and actually had a shit ton of stuff on it besides salt and pepper

It's so refreshing whenever David mentions about his mom's cooking.... especially for us Koreans this is going to be something that we would always get sentimental about is the food your mother makes as we grow older... Currently my mom, similar to David's mother is working 10+ hours every single day. Since she is not usually home I have started to cook for myself more often and even for the rest of my family... For me trying to be a perfectionist and over achiever type when it comes to making a dish I would take hours just to complete a dish... but the funny thing is whenever my mom does have the chance to cook for me it would take her just a few minutes with simple home ingredients and it would taste 100 times better than what I have made... it's definetly the love and warmth she puts into every dish she makes which no one else can ever imitate... which I'm truly happy that I am able to share such similar feelings with David. It has got to be the Korean roots

That’s so true tho, like our parents don’t need to tell us they love us because they do so in different ways, whether it’s making sure we eat enough, or making sure that we are living okay. At the end of the day we know they care for us no matter how hard they push us or spoil us and I think that’s so important and significant in asian culture.

I love to listen to your stories because even though we come from completely different backgrounds, I feel like we have the same values. For instance, you talk about how food in your family means love. In my family that is how it is to. My mom does not understand my brother and my relationship with food and why it is SO STRONG, but for us food means love and is about family and thankfulness. I always explain to her that a good meal means "I love you and that you appreciate and are thankful in that moment even though you may have had a bad day." And as a side note, you would love mexican style chicharones! I normally HATE pork and fatty meats, but I like Chicharones!
