Banks of the Ohio three-finger thumb lead rolls on low G ukulele

  • Thumb, index and middle finger play the rolls (mostly forward rolls in the order of thumb - index - middle) on low G ukulele. Melody of Banks of the Ohio is played first at low strings, where the thumb naturally leads the melody. But then the melody moves to the upper register and something strange happens.
While the banjo players would lead the melody on the 1st string with the middle finger, I found that for me works better the "strictly thumb lead" method where I cross the thumb way down to the 1st A string. Index finger plays the 3rd C string and middle finger plays the 2nd E string.
If you dare to try this thumb lead approach, I recommend to practice first (for a long time) the crossover of the thumb and index finger only: thumb plays the melody on the 2nd E string, index finger is on the 3rd C string and middle finger is in its normal position on the 1st A string. When this becomes natural, only then try the complete thumb crossover over both index and middle finger.
I do not need to think about what finger shall play the melody - for me it is always the thumb.
The same thumb lead approach is used in strumming, see

Good job! You don’t see many people playing the ukulele banjo style with a thumb pick!
