DRAMA at the start! Will Buick is head-butted by an adjacent horse but the starter let's them go!

  • The first race of Cazoo Derby day 2022 proved unexpectedly dramatic when the starter let the horses go while not realising William Buick was not fully aboard his mount having been hit in the face by a horse in the adjacent stall.
Buick was waiting for the start of the Cazoo Handicap aboard the well-fancied Blue Trail when the horse drawn next to him, Approachability, swung round and gave him a hefty blow to the head.
The incident was captured by an overhead camera. Seconds later, the race began but Buick, a bit like a boxer having taken a heavy punch, was still recovering, perched on the infrastructure. Blue Trail ran off on his own but was later deemed to be a non-runner for betting purposes. Buick was checked by medics after the race and passed fit to continue riding.

In the States, Buick would not have gotten hit in the head by the horse next to him, because the assistant starter would have been holding the horse preventing him from swinging his head to the side when he reared. Technically the horse won because its horse racing not jockey racing it’s all about the horses the horses speed stamina etc the jockey is only there to guide the horse and that’s it so blue trail technically won and whoever thought of the rule that a horse needs A jockey to win was probably drunk or on something because it’s all About the horses not the jockey so they should get rid of this dumb stupid rule because it’s pointless and defies what horse racing is horse racing is about the horses only not the jockey

It would have taken only a few moments to remove Buick and Blue Trail from the starting gain.

I can clearly see in the images that the horse turned into his stall and swung right into his eyes. As well as the concerned looks on the handlers, jockeys and other people who were in the frames. His face was also a bit pale afterwards which does NOT happen to a jockey that has faked an injury. I know because I have fallen off many horses and my siblings have been thrown from horses or smacked by horses like this jockey was. We end up injured with back and head injuries EVERY SINGLE TIME.
