      @White Rider My personal opinion, Damascus style blades are beautiful. But their maintenance and upkeep are a bit of a pain in the butt to. They seem to dull faster and rust faster. I keep a food grade lubricating oil on all my knives, but God for bid you miss even one tiny little spot on the Damascus blade.

      Looks to me like this contest is usually won or lost by performance, handling, or durability. Artistry is a tie breaker if both blades deliver well on all of the above. And there are ways to add artistry at the end when you know how much time you have to spare.
      In this case, the other, less fancy, blade had better handling until it broke, a problem with the fit up.

    For me, the big takeaway for both winners and losers is learning. Don't leave space in your grip design. Don't have a big flare in your grip at the hilt. Every single episode I've watched has had at least 2 solid learning points, and even if you don't win the actual contest, if you learn what you did wrong or what you could have done better, you're still a winner.
    Try to learn something new every day. If it's something that applies to your life, great! If not, still great!

      @TheNighthawk00 Před 2 lety +4

      Indeed. And I am willing to bet that in the majority of cases it has been shown on this show to be counterproductive. Often times the forging process fails and they need to start over with a non-Damascus blade but losing a whole day of work. That's really a handicap. Another probable ending is that the forging works out but that the quality of the grain is bad and the strength test finishes off the blade.
      It seems to me that unless you are truly confident in your skills, you should opt for something else instead.
