- Lori is one of the major reasons that I created DDF.
One of the first articles I wrote on the Optimising Nutrition blog five years ago was about how to use your glucose as a fuel gauge. Lori found this a couple of years ago implemented.
She kept contacting me to tell me how well it had worked for her and how she was sharing it everywhere.
I had had it in the back of my mind to go back and develop the concept more, but Lori's encouragement was a big motivation to develop DDF into a complete system.
While I was listening to her recent podcast with Gin Stephens sharing her journey I had a lot more questions. So, I thought it would be great to chat with her about her journey a little more and to share her wisdom form doing this for two years.
We got to chat about:
- How did you get started using your glucose as a fuel gauge?
- What was your motivation to try this approach to weight loss and metabolic health?
- Why is/was it important for you to be/stay trim and healthy?
- What approaches did you try that didn't work so well?
- What did you find that worked well for you?
- Why does simply focusing on limiting calories not work for most people?
- You're a big fan of Trim Healthy Mumma. How are they different? Why do they advise that is it important not to mix fat and carbs in a meal?
- Lots of people are talking about carb cycling or metabolic flexibility. What are the benefits of incorporating carbs?
- Who do you think alternating between carbs vs fat for energy doesn't work well for? Many people would struggle to think in terms of low fat vs low carb meals and switch between them.
- What sort of meals do you enjoy for a low fat vs low carb meal?
- Why is it important not to be locked into one dietary dogma?
- You spend a lot of time sharing what has worked for you. Why are you so passionate about this?
- Who do you think DDF would be most useful for?

Thanks for the great conversation. I joined DDF after hearing Lori on Gin’s podcast and have learned so much since that time! Thank you both!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for posting this! I've been wanting to watch it.
Hope you enjoy it! optimisingnutrition.com/data-driven-fasting/
Awesome - thank you Lori and Marty, lots of secrets unveiled!
thanks for checking it out. Lori is wonderful!
so valuable: thank you for all your work and making it available.
pleasure. glad you enjoyed it.
I loved this talk. Around 34 min, I realized lately that eating clean beef sticks, even though they did not spike my BG too high, my BG did not come down fast at all. It took me until the next day to get it down where it needed to be. Thank you for this explanation.
glad you found it helpful. keeping blood sugars stable is not really the end game if your blood sugars stay elevated for a long time!
she is amazing- thank you !!!!
yes she is!
Thank You for clearing up the MM/L. It would be helpful to see our values on the side.
you can divide mg/dL by 18 to get mmol/L.
I love this idea! I will have to try it!
it's pretty cool. you can read more about it here. optimisingnutrition.com/data-driven-fasting/
Thanks for this!!!! So informative..
thanks so much. Lori is a real gem!
Fascinating discussion. It occurs to me that the French prohibition on snacking achieves much the same goal as reaching the trigger blood glucose level. You're bound to be at or near it by the time the next meal. This points to "Le French Paradox" not being so mysterious.
checking your premeal BG as we do in Data Driven Fasting quickly snacking when you realise you don't need more fuel. ;)
Thank you Lori and Marty, I joined 5/4/2021 and I getting ready to do the 30 challenge on June 5, 2021!!!
awesome. we just wrapped up our seventh DDF challenge. the results are consistently astounding!!! optimisingnutrition.com/data-driven-fasting/
Thank you, I await all your data!
cheers. we have some data and results here that you can check out. optimisingnutrition.com/category/results/
great stuff.
Thanks!
Great info :)
Thanks!
I bought your book. So what I don't understand is what number on the glucometer would be ideal to eat a meal?
it's personalised to your body based on your after after three days. check out our DDF 101 course here to learn more and get the DDF app: members.optimisingnutrition.com/spaces/6296199/content
What about using this method if you have Type 1 Diabetes?
Exogenous insulin will change things a little. It makes sense to not overeat if your CGM says your BGs are high. But it won’t work if you use extra insulin to get below your trigger.
as I watch this video
what I contemplate
is how much physical weight
I have to release:
(75.2 Lbs to be precisely exact!)
for the sake of my health
and for my well-being.
(I have diabetes. I need to reverse it.
I'm open to hearing tips/advice/hacks/info.)
the thing is though...
I realize that I desperately also
hold on to all the excess weight:
for safety and for comfort.
dear God, please please please,
help the weight dissolve off of me,
and please help me to no longer have the need
to hold on to any of it, for the illusion
of safety and protection. I am ready
to be permanently, forever released
from these shackles...
I love your precise goals. it's a process that takes time. you can learn more about DDF here. optimisingnutrition.com/data-driven-fasting/
Have your wife used Emla cream (local anaesthetic cream) prior to putting on CGM?
we have tried the magic cream.
What is the best non invasive glucometer to use?
we recommend the Contour Next One for accuracy and functionality. optimisingnutrition.com/getting-ready-for-the-ddf-30-day-challenge-faq-part-2-2/
ok, but HOW do we use the meter? How many minutes after eating do we test?
DDF focuses on testing your BGs before you eat. you can also test a couple of hours after you eat. check this out for more details. optimisingnutrition.com/data-driven-fasting/
how do I start this program...

Where can we buy your meals cookbooks?
I've watched a few videos on this DDF and the whole thing seems to me like a car salesman at work.
Yesterday the diet doctor put out a new video with Martin as a guest, I wanted to watch the end today but the video was taken down, I wonder why?
they had some audio issues with the first upload. here's the version with the fixed audio. never been called a car salesman before. let me know if you have any specific questions or comments. czcams.com/video/AmDu6Sep-m8/video.html
@@optimisingnutrition are you saying that when my blood sugar gets to 4.5 MMOL then eat? I did enjoy the conversation by the way
Does she eat all of that food in one sitting, or were those pictures examples of what she eats in a day?
Lori works up a healthy appetite by waiting and walking on a treadmill desk all day!
Wow, that is a lot of food. I'd probably vomit that all up. I have gastroparesis. I have to eat small amounts or it's big trouble.
if you eat more regularly, you probably won't be hungry for that much food.
@@optimisingnutrition Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me.
Rice, tortilla's? That's ok?
with the DDF system, you can test your glucose after you eat to see if your body is dealing with the energy from the carbs. if it rises by more than 30 mg/dL after eating, then you might want to eat less of that food next time.
The crackling on the audio is very distracting.
sorry about that. Lori really likes to walk.
why don't americans measure in mmol like the rest of us?
Americans have a confusing way of looking at units. For example, when asked how much protein to eat, they answer in grams per pound. What on Earth led them to that hybrid!
@@asarcadyn2414 or mg/dl instead of mmol/l for even those few times they do end up using the metric system... it's confusing nation...
maybe they'll catch up with the modern world eventually.
@@optimisingnutrition i hope so but i doubt it, they're number one, leader of the free world, it's all of us that should dance after their tune...
