  • On this week’s episode of The Metabolic Link, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino is sitting down with world-renowned metabolic scientist, Ben Bikman, PhD, to explore the ins and outs of insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), and ways to manage, and even reverse, both.
    In this discussion, Dr. Bikman makes a case for why testing fasting insulin should be a part of the diagnostic and treatment equation when addressing T2DM, the difference between pathological and physiological insulin resistance, and how insulin therapy affects metabolic physiology in T2DM. Dr. Bikman explains that while insulin is necessary for healthy living, it can elicit significant and harmful changes in tissue metabolic function when chronically elevated. Dr. D’Agostino and Dr. Bikman also dive into the relationship between triglycerides and insulin, and some of his latest research in the lab.
    Dr. Ben Bikman has a Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. His research focus is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that mediate the disruption that causes and accompanies metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Driven by his academic training, he is currently exploring the contrasting roles of insulin and ketones as key drivers of metabolic function. He is a highly accomplished scientist with numerous publications in high impact journals and international presentations.

    I was able to reverse pre diabetes, PCOS, insulin resistance and fatty liver with diet change. I stopped eating carbs. All on my own because my doctor was more interested in medicating me instead of educating me on metabolic syndrome and the importance of diet. I learned how to eat watching CZcams videos. I wish doctors were better educated in nutrition instead of just keeping patients dependent on pharmaceuticals.

    Ben Bikman is a treasure. Loved that talk.
    Reversed prediabetes, lost 90lbs, a dozen other improvements like eczema/brain fog/depression/social anxiety resolved etc.
    Beef, butter, bacon, eggs, 0carb hard cheese, bone broth, 1 year so far.
    Got a lot of chicken and fish early on, with added butter. Now mostly steak and eggs and eggs and steak.
    I don't care if I am wrong about everything and die instantly at some point, I prefer feeling good for as long as I am alive, rather than living to 100 and be on meds and in a
    nursing home for 40 years, or die on cancer like most of my family due to carb addiction.
    Eat real food with 1 ingredient.

      I love your attitude. I doubt you will ever even be in a nursing home. I started fasting and Carnivore one month ago. I wasn't looking for it. It found me! Nearly 2 years ago my twin sister called me that she was going in for surgery. She had breast cancer. I tried to support her, but was really attached to my tender chicken, bone broth and eggs and milk. She declined chemo and went vegan. I decided to wait several months, especially after hearing about plant toxins and oxylates, to break the news...hey sis...I'm Carnivore. I'm a senior and so many people my age have given into old age, pharmaceuticals, walkers and the list goes on. I don't really understand what Dr. Bikman is discussing. I just want to live strong and vital. I do hope the Carnivore community grows beyond measure. Our society has been sick too long.

      @@susancastner7332 Sorry to hear what you've been through, keep strong, as we only can lead by example.
      That's the most important point I've learned so far. You cannot force poeple to do anything, food lifestyle is a religion.
      You may slide some videos here and there but in the end people are not ready for it.
      A work college of mine had a tumor cut out because he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. As I was linking him a video from Dr. Berry titled "Cancer hates this diet" he just answered "The doc said the cancer was cut out, no life interventions needed right now.".
      People don't want to see any changes as long as there is an operation, a pill or a therapy for anything,
      I wish you all the best for your family,
      be the shining light so that one day, they might come around!

    There comes a time when, after reading and watching so much on the subject of metabolic health, you have to rely on information from ‘expert sources’ and it is evident Mr Bikman is one of the few at the top of his game. Great talk from both gentlemen.

      You are so right. I've seen every podcast with Ben Bikman and he gives you more info in each youtube video. I now eat whole eggs and meat with a bit of fat on it because of him. Trying "not to fear fat" as he says. But, also look up the Glucose Goddess youtube videos or her FB, instagram accounts. Because just like what was mentioned at the end of this video, some people still eat too much sweets and starches even if they know better. The GlucoseGodess explains in more detail ways one can circumvent that "sugar roller coaster" cycle of eating sweets and starches which activate your hunger center in your brain to produce hunger hormones that make you want more sweets and starches - one "hack", one way to stop the cravings and sugar spikes, then later sugar "crashes" is to start with a savory breakfast or first meal of the day instead of a sweet breafast or first meal, this is one of her "hacks". She gives people 10 "bio hacks" in chapter 3 of her book "Glucose Revolution".

    Thank God for Dr. Bikman! I am 58 years old and have been. T2D for 25 years. I read the doctor's book, Why We Get Sick, twice. In 6 months, the information in that book has helped me reduce my insulin usage by 70% and my A1C is down from 10.5 to 7.2 and I have lost 30 lb. I'm so thankful for this new information. ❤ Please keep spreading the word on insulin resistance to help more people.

    I love Dr Bikmans book "Why We Get Sick." This is exactly what happened to me over the last 25 years. I'm working on reversing my insulin resistance/ Type2 diabetes with low carb and IF. It works. I have already reduced my insulin injections and medications by over 60%

    I’ll start at the beginning. @28 I developed hypertension from literally nowhere. I was running 10km a day. I had scans, echoes, bloods, stress test, v max. Nothing showed any issues. Fast forwards to 2022,I am now 66. I went carnivore. My Bp is now lowering. I have come off 2 meds onto 1. At the rate I am improving it looks as though I will be med free by the end of the year. All along it must have been an insulin/ glucose metabolic issue. No one tested my insulin only my glucose, and because that sat between 4.7 and 6 I was deemed to be in good health. These guys have changed my life and I thank them for that so much. I share every podcast and will send this to my GP practice.

      @@Mr_Fission my Doctor says it’s stupidity and I will damage my health beyond repair. I’m off for more bloods on Monday morning. It’s almost as though he can’t wait to find something wrong. This is now the 2nd time since Christmas. All because my ldl has risen, my hdl has risen and my trigs are down to 0.88.
      I have a friend that’s changed her diet to follow the same lines as me. Once again, meds reduced and bp falling. We can’t all be wrong.

      @@24bellers20 I had a feeling that your doctor was trying to sabotage your progress. Their understanding of cholesterol is entirely wrong. There is so much scientific evidence showing that cholesterol levels don't matter whatsoever, and that in older people, higher LDL levels are associated with LONGER life, not shorter.

      Keep up the good fight! Sadly doctors want you sick, because you buy more services when you're ill than when you're healthy. They are symptom management salesmen, not health improvement experts. Never forget that your illness is a commodity to them, and if your illness goes away, they can't monetize you anymore. That's why your doc wants you to fail.

    I started low carb in 2018 after learning I was prediabetic, at age 71. My PCP had merely circled my fasting glucose number of 117, and said my AST was high, at 48. I went home and looked it up and decided I was prediabetic. At least. He had never run A1C on me. Since then it has been like pulling teeth to have fasting insulin run. Last checkup I asked what my A1C was, he replied my fasting BS was 99 so need to check it. OMG. And he is proud of my health, saying I'm his best patient. Carnivore here, no thanks to him. I looked up the lab report and ketones were "+1".

      General practitioners make me so angry. They are essentially salesmen for "health" products. But a huge portion of their client base consists of metabolically sick people. If the GP's make their patients metabolically healthy, those people are no longer in the market for as many services. They're not buying blood pressure drugs. They're not buying blood tests every two months. They're not buying regular office visits. The sicker we are, the better customers we are, from their perspective. It really makes me sick how our society has come to view what are essentially sales personnel as caring medical experts who want us to be well. They don't. They need us sick.

    Great talk. Having been diagnosed with HBP in my 30's tgen NAFLD in my 40's then Graves Disease in 50's with half thyroid taken plus dealing with swinging obesity periods abd now in my 60's i've got the brain fig, lethargy, protruding stomach, skin problems, varicose veins. I've just started realising its probably leaky gut and insulin resistance all along. I've now started intermittant fasting but after listening to your talk and other doctors i'm going to switch to wholefoods, no sugar and flours and build to a 36 hour fast once a week to try and get on top of my symptoms . I feel 82 instead of 62 .

    Fantastic information! This has helped me figure out some of the things in managing my health goals. I'm doing very low to no carbs and eating one meal, mainly meat (beef and pork) in the evening. I needed to lose weight, bring down my A1C, lower my BP, etc. I'm finally being more successful at it and controlling my carb cravings. Some of what you have both said here has explained in part what I've been learning in practice. I enjoy listening to the two of you break all of this down. Thanks!

    Thank you so much for pointing out that in type 2, insulin production might be insulin insufficient but it does not "Burn Out" I coach LADA (type 1 in adults) and so very many of them were misdiagnosed as type 2 for a significant time, some for years. It is far more plausible (in many cases) where those type 2s who "burn out" were never type 2 at all.

    My new soon to be old Dr. Refuses to prescribe me a CGM because she doesn’t want me to obsess over the numbers and wants me to follow the Diabetes association’s dietary guidelines. I have been doin ketovore since Feb.25th and have lost weight, lowered my daily blood glucose, and A1C with no thanks to her!

    Ben, it's been a great pleasure to listen to you in the many interviews and your own podcasts. Many of these are long however, and I am overwhelmed
    I started having fatigue about the time I took the first vaccination in 2020, under duress to keep my job. From that time I have suffered from a life altering lack of energy. In 2022, June, 18 I started Carnivore for the first time. I would have to say I have been on and off as I have had periods such as holidays where I thought I would slip off a little, but that has proven to be a complete failure, so recently I have doubled down on a commitment to remain as carnivore as possible for the foreseeable future.
    The reason I started carnivore was multifaceted issue with my health as I was being literally attacked by my body and was suffering for many years. Liver problems being high up in the tank but undiagnosed. I simply now believe it's just visceral fat invading my body
    I have lost most of the problems except the few with fatigue and better weight loss. I am just starting to run springs, which as I understand it, I should see some results in healing over the course of months. I don't know if that is related to my fatigue. Maybe it would be since the hormones would be disregjlated.
    My question for you is really simple. Recently I purchased a keto /glucose monitor. I have noticed that I wake up in the 120 range several times lately. I also had an event where I was at 35 and almost ready to pass out. I had to eat a bunch of carbs to clear that up. If I eat say a half dozen pieces of bacon my blood glucose went to 140 about 1 hour after eating that to break my fast.
    Am I having trouble with insulin?

    People like you two on U-tube have saved me from poor Health! Thanks! I am 69 and about a year and a half I changed to a low carb diet, cut my sugar and alcohol consumption, started walking every day, and weight training 3 times a week.... I dropped 45 lbs. around my middle, gained some muscle and dropped my High Blood Pressure to more Normal levels. I only eat one meal or sometimes two meals a day. I think I will live a lot longer and more Healthy than many People I know who still eat the SAD and don't exercise. You folks educating us are a true blessing! I never learned any of this from my Doctors! Thanks!

      Doctors are sales personnel, not health personnel. If we get better, we stop coming to see them as much. They're not clueless. They're protecting their business model. They're protecting their livelihoods by keeping people sick when they ignore the evidence that a low carb diet creates healthy humans. We're just customers to the industrial-scale illness management industry that we've been trained to call "healthcare".

    First, you are two of my favorite scientists. I even had the opportunity to refer a young girl with, if I recall correctly, a seizure disorder when I was in Wyoming to Dr. D’Agastino some years back. Not sure what happened to her, as I was on vacation out there and just happened to see a poster displayed in a restaurant where I had breakfast before an early flight. I simply wrote down his name, gave it to an employee and told her to give it to the child’s parents/doctor. Anyhow…
    Now, I am trying to find out how chemo and/or radiation disturb metabolism. Something doesn’t seem right in my friend who had two bouts of cancer. He’s very disciplined… like… EXTREMELY, but his glucose, which I have repeatedly told him to ignore for a better value… insulin, continues to rise. He just tested and his glucose was now 7. His team is likely missing something, but idk… ?????

      @@karenf9137 I think the best Doctor to help with tests... would be for you to SEARCH FOR: an ("Integrative Doctor") which most insurance policies WILL NOT pay for!🙁😢More than likely you will have to pay out of your pocket!! Because these Doctor's will not except the lower payments insurance companies try to tell them they will pay them! Nor will insurance Companies pay for many of the tests these Doctor's use to evaluate problems in one's health!!! Sad, but THESE are the facts!!

    In the old world, we didn't have turkey. We had goose, duck, pigeon, partridge, plus animal meat. You couldn't buy pork unless there was an R in the month. Turkey is a very modern dish. Chicken was eaten at special times, we would have a capon at Christmas, easter. Working class people kept chickens in their gardens, for their eggs.     Almost through this Video. Haven't heard anything said about high Cortisol which also raises Insulin.
    My Cortisol is high in the a.m. without eating my glucose is high unless I keep myself calm. Deep breathing to bring Cortisol and Insulin down (no eating) for me in the a.m.

      Doing "healthy keto"1 I lost my appetite and so getting nutrients was my big issue. I'd say using electrolytes was critical to sticking with it too. I just didn't want to eat much but felt fine as long as I took electrolytes. Lost 33 lbs in about 6 wks so everyone thought i was dying. Being just under 5'9 and going from 147 to 114 was extreme. I even lost my periods. Making new drinks and teas with monk fruit drops and erithritol (plus watching dr berg videos) kept me motivated to keep at it. The benefits of autophagy is where I got my main interest in it. I did keto and IF for health issues, not weight loss. I had pretty loose skin on my abdomen from dropping too much fat, too fast, but loose skin is a small price to pay for regaining energy, focus and overall feeling better. My joint pain decreased greatly. I wouldn't worry about loose skin. After safely loosing weight and feeling healthier, skin can be removed if desired. Good luck!

      mattie clark, You've got this! It's not difficult after watching this dr and Dr Berg, Dr Hyman etc...
      I'm currently losing weight, FINALLY! By eliminating refined carbs & IF. I extend the after dinner & sleep fast by delaying breakfast almost to lunchtime. I drink tea or coffee without creamer or honey so as not to break the fast. I then have a protein rich meal ie eggs, cheese & ham. My dinner is chicken, fish or beef & vegies with salad. I will also have a small amount of tuna or pickled herring as a snack, if I've worked hard & my energy is flagging. I may add an electrolyte drink for the afternoons to replenish & support my system.
      No potatoes, rice etc.
      The weight is falling off already!!! My body moves more easily. My mood is elevated because my aches and pains from Fibromyalgia are getting less strong as well! 👍🏻
      You can do this too! It's actually relatively easy as I dont feel hungry for the most part & I smile when I am hungry because my body is burning off the fat for energy! Win Win! 🎉

    Just found you. Brillant discussion. Much needed. The so called diabtes educators are failing their patients bevause they still advocate carbs as if they are someway helpful. Truth of the matter is diabtes type 2 is symptomatic of a body over run with insulin due to excessive carbs and sugars unable to be digested into energy and therefore best to be fully avoided to help body use up the excess and heal. Finding the carnivore diet only a month ago has been an answer to a prayer and found my blood sugars to reduce and remain in range all the time and weight to naturally begin to redice. So seems my body can begin to naturally heal itself as it adapts to fat as feul and uses us excess fat storres in liver and around belly ect. Basically this chat will explain in detail why a diet fully devoid of sugar and carbs and veggies and fruit and focused on animal products is the true human diet. Lets help others and let them in on the secret of good health and life, before the vile globalists take our beef away. Another fight is on the horrizen as they seek to stop beef trade.

      You're absolutely right. If we are eating animal meat, we're not eating grains. This is a problem to the food industry because grains are more profitable than meat. Our society is based on selling us sugar to get us sick, then selling us pill-shaped industrial chemicals to manage the illnesses we get from the sugar, then keeping us in that loop for our entire lives. The solution is animal protein. Which is why there is an effort to take it away. A healthy citizen is an unprofitable customer. It really makes me mad, but you're right.

      Thanks for this. I have been low carb & time restricted feeding for some years and yet I have recently discovered that I am on the first rung of pre-diabetes. Learning this I reduced carbs close to zero, salad excepted, and used a continuous glucose monitor for a fortnight, including a 7day fast at the end. I had spikes in glucose unrelated to eating (fasted) and in the UK I can't seem to get tested for insulin anywhere. The whole issue is a puzzle

      I’m curious. Why are you freaked out. Lots of experts talk about normal ketosis vs ketoacidosis. You can’t really be in ketosis if you have high insulin levels, can you?

Also that getting my sleep sorted out (which I need to do) will minimise anxiety and cortisol. Question is for me, does my glucose just spike too high and too often or am I also insulin resistant? I did a crude glucose tolerance test (scarfed 75g of maltose, couldn't get hold of glucose) and my glucose level went through the roof then undershot coming down within 2 hours. Doesn't say insulin resistant to me, but then that was on the second day out of my fast so.... It grinds my gears that I have not been able to get a fasted insulin test anywhere and myself and millions of others are being kept in the dark

Doesn't seem fair, but this seems to be my current situation also. Another doc I listen to is Sten Ekberg who also has much to say about this.

    Strange thing I was diagnosed as insulin resistant in 1968 by a consultant physician. Given no advice told I'd be diabetic by the time I was 40. I was 8s lb11 (lb113) 5'5'' and very active. I ate a normal english 50s 60s diet. We didn't take the all American diet too seriously until the 70s. When the sugar and food manufactures destroyed Professor John Judkin for saying fat good, sugar bad etc.
    I was diagnosed diabetic 2 at 74 years So I'd been in the pre diabetic state a long time. Still not on any drugs after 2 years but fighting to get a normal blood sugar. Down to pre diabetic now. Dr refuses to test for fasting insulin or prescribe any sort of glucose monitoring machine, HBA1C every 6 months. Bought my own monitor which I should not have to in UK.
    Listening to you I had signs of insulinemia, put on weight, which I could not shift, high BP in my 40s. Only now watching CZcams is my weight dropping. I've had to go almost carnivore to see any change. Dropped BP tablets from 3 to 2.
    Being almost carnivore is not good for your social life. Restaurants have meals for vegetarians but not carnivores or ketovore.
    Social gatherings a nightmare, normally brown food. So I call them sin days and enjoy myself. Don't have too many though. We don't have much summer let alone global warming, and that polluting volcano going off in Iceland has destroyed our summer.😭😭

    3. Triglycerides is not an indication of how much fat is being consumed, instead it is how much fat is being made by the liver, and insulin will dictate that.

    About chicken, I'm old enough to remember that chicken tasted awesome and now it's tasteless and has a chemical or metalic taste once in awhile. Totally agree the breeding has ruined chicken meat.
    Calories do not matter to me, what matters is that I'm satiated, and that I learned to stop eating fat/meat when full. This is because I know I can eat when needed so calorie counting does not come into play.

    I'd like to ask Dr. Bikman a question. @Dr. Bikman, could you do a video that will lay out the biological steps the body goes through when you start to see insulin resistance being reversed? such as weight loss, possibly elevated glucose levels while simultaneously being in optimal ketosis ie 2 hours post meal (every meal throughout the day, so the glucose remains at 140mg/dL all day) with ketones ranging from 1.8mmol/L up to 3.5 mmol/L?

    You didn't mention seed oils. They are a contributor to stopping weight loss on a ketogenic diet for many people so that's why nut butters and even olive oil (contaminated) can be a problem.

      He did very briefly mention seed oils, e.g., when he spoke about consuming fats with protein for better protein absorption & mTOR - in describing ideal fats he talked about consuming fruit oils like olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil - 'not seed oils' - he did say,
      'not nut oils' but (imo) he said that only to distinguish fruit flesh oils, from fruit nut & seed type oils - in the context of which non- animal dietary fats he advocates for.

      By 'contaminated' do you mean olive oil (especially imported) fm outside U.S. that are labeled 'extra virgin olive oil' but are bastardized (somewhere along the bottling or importing pathway), with cheap polyunsaturated oils?
      Yah, I've heard/read that can be common. Best to purchase your olive oil directly from a known reliable source that specializes in the growing of olive trees for harvesting nutrient rich, pure EVOO - rather than buying at the grocery store.

    We can collect and measure the amount of ketones in urine excretion, but is there another way to actually directly measure how the mitochondria are utilizing kcals other than through the BMR through the exercise breath testing. And measuring the oxygen consumption of mitochondria in relation to kcals used then correlating those usage factors in relation to the storage and size of the fat cells. Then is there really a relationship to body weight and the bodies utilization of kcals? This is all in question about kcals in and kcals out and how does the body recognize kcals vs. actually responding to nutrients role in body weight. Thanks.

    I have seen one of my customers decline. She use to say she had constant migraines headaches, I saw her a year ago and she was bone thin, her husband called my office a few months ago that she now has dementia and to remove her as a driver from their auto policy. I knew she had diabetes but now I think all of these signs are part of that.

    I wish I had watched this before my physical last week. My doctor would not do an insulin test, said glucose was all that was needed. He told me that eating fat is what causes diabetes. He told me that as soon as I go off of Keto (guess he is assuming I will), I will immediately be insulin resistant and will get diabetes. He also said that by refusing to go vegetarian, I would die 3 years earlier. I told him it was worth it, I hate most vegetables. So, I will get my own tests done...

      Whenever any study shows increase in LDL, I always want to know if it is pattern a or b, aswell as, as Dr Berry said, 1/3 lowers LDL, 1/3 stays the same, 1/3 increeases, indicating we all have different "optimal different default levels" of LDL.
      If the lipoproteins are not oxidized, I'd be curious to see what the average LDL span would be across the world if noone would be chronically inflamed.

    I have insulin resistance, probably due to the fact that I had undiagnosed hypercortisolism for several years (5-10 years?) because Drs are horrible and refused to believe that anything was wrong with me other than having anxiety and depression and what they assumed was poor diet/lack of exercise (ridiculous! I’ve always been active!) Anyway, yes, I can’t lose weight anymore. I also developed exercise intolerance and sun/heat intolerance after my left adrenal removed with the cortisol producing tumor. My cortisol levels are normal now but the weight just stays on. My endocrinologist prescribed Metformin and that was a disaster. I felt my veins and heart constricting after taking it for a few days. I tried getting back on it 3 times. Every time I tried taking Metformin I felt horrible. Now I’m taking Berberine a and other glucose controlling supplements with my meals and I feel better, I just don’t know if I’ll lose weight.

      I lost my left kidney and adrenal gland to cancer. I eat extreamly low carb and have normal blood sugar and kidney, adrenal function now for the first time in forever. I take no meds. I have to be cautious with exercise as my blood pressure will get too low from low adrenaline. I workout hard once or twice a week but I will use a no carb sweetened electrolyte(lmnt}. I'm not sure of the mechanism but I experiment a lot. My blood sugar will get to 3.9 or 4 but I feel great and my BP doesn't go under 103/65. If I just drink water or electrolyte my BP will get down to 93/57. I hope you do great on your journey.

    13:20 09.22.23. im so glad I found this. Recently diagnosed DB2. Higbloodpressure 10 years. I need to loose 40 lbs. 1st. I dont want to take med but i feel so awful i need to because its been a A1c 8-10.5. this has been going on 3 years. I now realize all issues i have had were related to high blood sugar. So now i Research literature im super interested in the mitochondria and the deeper root change sonthat i can reverse this. Im active busy..love a challenge. But my brain is off mybentire body is. And sadly i have suddenly lost muscle. So eleimating the "fun stuff" , im great w tweaking my diet and taking the time to prepare fresh foods, and becoming more purposeful excerise. But what can i do you think to quickly get my body back to mostly a more healthy state in years maybe 20!

      Commit to 30 days of extremely low to no carb. Get plenty of salt during this time and possibly potassium and magnesium as well. You will notice a huge difference in the way you feel within 30 days!

    I don’t understand how to determine my HDL and Triglyceride ratio
    My HDL is 70 my triglycerides 100
    And my total cholesterol is 312
    I’m scared so I’m improving my diet and totally going fat free. 10 years ago I had a colon resection and my appendix and cecum were removed so I think that’s why my cholesterol is going up. My A1c is 5.6 I’m trying to lower it and my calcium 10.4
    How do I lower the LDL Dr. Bikman?
    I exercise for daily and close all my rings on my watch and walking 8,000 steps a day. I’m 70 year old female.

      Fat free is a NAD choice. As he said, protein and fat come together naturally. There has been no proven link between saturated fat intake and heart disease. Even the College of Cardiologists published a mega analysis that pointed this out. ALL your hormones are made with fat, in addition to all the cell membranes , etc. , in your body. You can absorb fat soluble vitamins if you are not eating fat. Fat is also satiating. We ALWAYS have room for carbs. 😏

    I am type 2 diabetic and Istarted carnivore 4 days ago. My glucose numbers have been in the normal range since day 1. I'm afraid to take any of my 3 diabetic meds. Should I continue any for keeping my cells open to receive energy? I heard that too much insulin closes the locks the cells down. However, I don't want to bottom out. Is that even possible on carnivore?

      Hi mommad. Based on my understanding, diabetic meds aren't prescribed to keep your cells open to receive energy. Those meds are given in order to reduce the amount of glucose circulating in your blood, because high blood glucose is extremely toxic and deadly. I can't give you advice. But if it was me, and my blood sugar was normal, I would halt their use. I don't know your situation though, and I'm not giving advice. But logically, if there's no elevated glucose, there's no problem that diabetes medications are solving. And in fact, drugs like metformin put a huge load on your pancreas, and can damage that organ permanently. If you've been given semaglutide or another GLP-1 agonist like Ozempic or Wygovy to help manage diabetes, that is also bad because it causes pretty severe muscle loss. Basically, any drug is going to hurt you somehow. They are all bad. They are not natural. We did not evolve while taking Metformin.
      If you're worried about glucose stability and control, your muscles are natural glucose sponges. When you exercise, even if it's just a walk, your muscles suck glucose directly from your bloodstream to create glycogen. This bypasses the insulin system entirely, and works even if you're insulin resistant. Even if you're type 2 diabetic, exercise will lower your blood sugar through this muscular system of use.
      My point is... if I were in your position, I'd do a 30 minute walk daily, monitor glucose a lot, and avoid those drugs unless they were needed to achieve the goal of normal blood glucose. Medication and drugs are always bad. They may fix one issue, but they cause ten other issues.
