  • In this First Drive review , Dan Edmunds gives all the details of the 2019 Ford Ranger including the interior, exterior, the bed, MPG, towing specs, off-road performance, and all the configurations.
We haven't had the Ford Ranger here in North America since 2011, and even then it was a compact pickup that no one much wanted apart from fleet buyers. Ford stood on the sidelines as the compact segment evolved into a midsize pickup segment and flourished. Now, at long last, Ford is ready to jump back in with the 2019 Ford Ranger, and Americanized version of a world-market Ranger that was never sold on these shores.
Q: What engine powers the 2019 Ford Ranger?
A: The new Ranger offers just one engine, a 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost that makes 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The Tacoma and the Colorado make a bit more power, but the Ranger makes considerably more torque than either of them. As a pickup, the extra torque may serve it well. And the turbocharged engine won't lose oomph in high-altitude locales.
Q: Is the Ford Ranger any good at towing?
A: Yes, the Ford Ranger is well-equipped to tow. It has a 7,500-pound tow rating, and that applies to all cab, bed and drive configurations. All you need to do to get that rating is opt for the trailer towing package. The engine's torque certainly makes this believable, but it is the 10-speed automatic (the only offering) that seals the deal for us. Such a high number of gears means there should be no hunting or dithering on grades because the right gear will always be close at hand.
Q: Can the Ford Ranger haul much payload?
A: The Ford Ranger has the highest payload rating among all midsize pickups. The extended-cab 4x2 can haul 1,860 pounds and has no equal. The extended-cab 4x4 (1,770 pounds) and crew-cab 4x2 (1,650 pounds) also offer best-in-class payload ratings for those configurations. Oddly, the Ranger crew-cab 4x4's rating of 1,560 pounds trails behind similar versions of the Colorado/Canyon and the Honda Ridgeline, but only slightly.
Q: What is the Ford Ranger like inside?
A: The new Ranger is based on a Ford Australia design that dates back to 2011, and the interior does show its age from a design standpoint. It looks like a Ford from 15 years ago, with tiny buttons and a plain central touchscreen infotainment system. The seats are comfortable and the driving position is excellent, but we wish the rear seat had a split-fold mechanism. As it stands, you can't put one person on one side and cargo on the other unless you pile your stuff on the seat itself.

im I the only one who finds it so odd how every reviewer is surprised there is no tailgate dampening? They're like: "Ford seriously expects us to lower the tailgate with our OWN ARMS??? WTF!?!"

Probably because Ford is last to the midsize pickup game now and they aren't even adding standard features that every other midsize truck has.

Agree, it's like we can't use our arms anymore to do anything, it's like they all say there isn't much room in the back seats if you'r 6ft, FFS it's a mid sized truck it's smaller then the bigger trucks, if you want more room in the back buy a F150 and move on.

A dampened tail gate is ok for the few times you have your hands full and can just get you fingers to release the gate but I've lived without it this long so I don't care if it ever gets it. Still, there are a few things missing from this truck but the price isn't lower.

You'd think. But a 2017 Focus sold at a starting price around $17K but the Escape, which it shares a platform with, started around $24K. But the Focus got discontinued because of slow sales. People are running in to dealers screaming TAKE MY MONEY for truck/SUVs. Sedans, not so much.

    • @orion3706

it used to be 60 months was the standard payment plan. I've seen more ads from dealers for 72 month financing. My grandma wouldn't do anything past 48 months. People will finance for as long as they have to to get what tthey want. Auto companies know this, which is why they offer 0% financing. People think they're getting a good deal, not realizing it's the payments themselves that keep them broke.

Ford is bringing the Courier to the USA in the next few years. It will be a true compact pickup. It won't be a "truck" as it will be based on the Focus but I don't care, really interested in seeing what it will be like. I imagine it will be like a Transit Connect but with a bed instead of a van body.

The 'testers' tend to sample the higher end models. I just checked prices on these at the dealers... an XL or STX ext cab w 6' box and 4wd is listed well under $30k. Ok, you don't get the cabin toys and terrain control system... but these days a 4wd pickup with decent power and a 6' box for under $30k isn't bad. Don't forget these will get you close to 30mpg if you drive them right as well... it's a long way from a '94 F150 302 shortbox...

Sure, it's an old platform and it's missing some of the refinement and features of the newer trucks, but it's still a reliable, capable, durable little truck. A lot of buyers seem to agree because Nissan sold 85,000 of them last year, which is a lot for such an old design. As with all reviews, this is obviously just an opinion in the video regarding the interior, but I actually really love the touch screen and button layout you get in the Ford truck line. It’s simple and intuitive to catch onto, and for returning Ford customers it’s like being right at home. The touch screen Sync 3 system is extremely responsive and easy to use, so I also strongly disagree with no “real” buttons being a negative. Also, off-road video reviews show that ground clearance is just as good as Tacos offer, and the off-road features are pretty much on par as well.

Mid size truck market is such a compromise and doesn’t really represent the best value. You really have to want a small struck and better fuel economy to get into this market happily. With incentives often found on half tons these mid sizers are a hard buy considering the crammed cabin and overall lacking feature set when compared to full size half tons. It’s not hard to get a very well equipped F150 for the crew cab 4x4 Ranger price. You get a whole lot more vehicle too. This isn’t just about the Ranger. None of the mid size trucks are anything special. They are all plain, mostly have underwhelming powertrains and lack space. It’s not even so much the lack of space as it is the under utilization of space available. When you look at the mid size market in general you can see that the R&D budget isn’t very high as there isn’t much special in that category. At least the Ranger has a strong engine and 10 speed trans. Drove a new Tacoma not long ago and almost fell asleep under hard acceleration. It felt gultless until it hit like 4K RPM then it make more noise and started moving a bit quicker but it certainly wasn’t exciting. Sure the truck will likely live a long boring life but I like to have some excitement in my daily vehicle here and there.

I had a new 2018 Tacoma and got rid of it after 3 months. Hated the transmission. It was always shifting gears, even on a flat straight highway it wouldn't settle into a gear. Plus it felt like a jack rabbit every time it shifted. Going down a grade it would downshift from 6th to 2nd in one jump at 55 mph, redlining the rpms. The dealer said it was "supposed" to do that. It was rated to tow 6700 lb, but labored pulling 3300. Huge disappointment. Traded it for a different make and model after 3 months. My first and last Toyota experience.

In South Africa the Ranger has never stopped being produced. Engine configurations and body detail a bit different. Top spec costs around $47 000. The Toyota line-up is still the best seller in South Africa

Tacoma’s the same price with shittier gas mileage. Just get the fucking base model like everyone else should or buy it used.

Best in class in almost every category. And that 2.3 with the 10speed will haul anything with ease! And be pretty quick!

Is that a twin turbo charger or single. That's a pretty powerful 4 cylinder motor. I think they finally figured that eco boost technology out. I love the 2.7 eco and the 3.5L

I honestly like the previous generation of the ranger. And I also have a soft spot for the late 80's early 90's Ranger. Those are still the best in my opinion. This one feels a little too much like a bigger Escape with a bed to me. Idk.

I have the 2017 Nissan Frontier SV Crewcab fully loaded and this looks super close to it as far as linterior, features, and most likely driveability. Not that this is a bad thing as my Nissan's a pretty good truck but I was hoping for more cutting edge out of the real people Ranger line. Only thing trading for looks like exterior styling change where I feel its a minimal gain. I'd say the Raptor version is a lot more of a change but that comes with a big, big increase in price plus Ford's dealerships charging another 7-15K premium markup. I'll skip for now when my lease is up 2020. 10 speed trans is the only highlight for this truck as of now.
