- Following an extended absence the Ford Ranger has returned for the 2019 model year, bringing with it a range of questions. Can real humans fit in the back seats? Is the cargo box ready for serious hauling? Is the Ranger’s standard turbocharged 4-cylinder engine a worthy mill for towing? How does the 2019 Ranger fare off-road? Join Kelley Blue Book’s Micah Muzio as he digs up the answers in our complete 2019 Ford Ranger review and road test.

Love Micah's reviews! Awesome job.
Yep same thing for me
For those who don't know, this Ranger was designed and engineered in Australia. While not built here, its arguably the most Australian car being sold worldwide. They're the second best selling vehicle here too and the updated look is very nice. We get the new Duratorq turbo diesel i4 engine with the 10 speed auto. Great Ute which im sure the North American market will love. Oh and we also have the Raptor here!
@guy proulx The Toyota HiLux Ute, which is a smaller than both the Tacoma and Tundra. They're built on a reputation of being tough and reliable which is true, but they're so vanilla in design and features. That doesn't stop nearly 50,000 being sold each year though. Might not sound like a lot but its yet to beat our own home grown Commodore which once sold 94,000 cars in Australia alone back in 1998.
@guy proulx The Commodore and Falcon were both cars produced in Australia. They were the best selling cars here for decades until about 8 years ago. Sales of both models dropped to less than a quarter of their original numbers causing both brands to cease production in Australia in 2016 and 2017 respectfully. The Commodore in its last year in production (2017) sold 23,500 cars and the Falcon (2016) sold only 6,500 cars. Compare this to 2007 the Commodore sold about 57,000 cars and the Falcon 47,500 cars.
Ford is doing alright in Australia as the Ranger sells about 42,000 units per year which is about half of all Ford sales in the country. The Mustang is also popular at nearly 10,000 sales per year since it was brought here. The Falcon is no longer in production, as well as the Australian built Ford Territory SUV.
As for Holden the same goes that a Ute/truck is their best selling. The Colorado ute sells about 23,000 units per year. The Commodore lives on as an imported FWD and AWD Hatch and Wagon. As an owner of a Commodore model (I have the Luxury Calais model) I am apart of the group of fans who dislike the decision to keep the name on the imported car which is nothing like the Commodore it replaces.
@guy proulx No worries
@guy proulx Ford Australia still has around 2000 employees, involved in design and testing. The test track at Lara is still operating. Ford Australia owns the T6 platform, which includes Ranger (including NA), Everest, Ranger Raptor and the Bronco chassis.
Remember when the Ranger was considered a small truck? Remember when you could actually buy a small truck in the US?
Remember when trucks were a death trap? Remember when small trucks had no power, and got poor fuel economy at the same time?
@@CatNerfer3000 Yeah, because I still can...
We got fat
Remember the small price tags?
@@formber Poor fuel economy? My '06 Ranger gets around 24 mpg combined and I've almost hit 30 on the highway before.
Same displacement as this Ranger and half the gears with a stick.
for Ford it seems very basic, and that's a good thing. Most people that own a mid size truck don't want all the bells and whistles that come with trucks these days. They wan't 4x4, a bed, comfortable seats and maybe bluetooth...
For the price you would think you would get some more tech though!
@@baggerbro1726 Look at the competition though, Tacoma lacks even basic feature such as seat height adjustment. What a joke. Only thing that can compete with this feature-wise is the Colorado/Canyon.
mike verdjak basic it has forward collision warning and automatic braking standard. That’s crazy for this segment and most version with have copilot 360 with tons and tons of other active safety features. Good on ford
Turbo, 10 speed transmission, start/stop, crazy safety package, and a huge 4 inch screen on the radio. That's basic??? I'm thinking the Frontier looks better every year.
But yet ford owners complain about the Tacoma having rear drum brakes and no power seat
I like when Micah does these reviews. He adds a lot of personality and style to it. And he ain't afraid to say when a vehicle does/doesn't meet a standard.
Great review, the outro was hilarious!
Oh man that "Oh boy! That is undamped." at 2:33 got me, felt really genuine haha.
I enjoyed that review, nice format, useful info. and entertaining. Thank you!
This was actually a very nice video...informative and entertaining. Thanks!
Most entertaining reviewer by far! Great camera work as well! Kudos to all of YOU!
Wait,
Manual tailgate?
And a actual key?
I’ll take 5
Says the 50's tractor fanboy...
Keep the satelite tracking radio away too. Junk stations for a fee, FM is still garbage but, free.... Simple and sturdy like a truck was.
That’s because it’s not a new design, it’s about 5 years old.
biaggiwins gotta problem with the Old A-C’s
Funny stuff he he he!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
Good review. Fun yet informative.
Ranger Raptor needs to have the 2.7 ecoboost V6
N96ZG bet you are right. Within the year
Im hoping they put it in the regular ranger
The Ranger Raptor sold overseas has a Bi-Turbo Diesel Engine, with 213 HP and 369 lb ft of torque, connected to a 10-speed AT.
@@wtrdogg20 I could see them offering the Ranger Raptor with a Diesel as an optional engine in the US Market but, not as the only engine option. Just like the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has either a 3.6 V6 Gasoline Engine or a 2.8 Turbo Diesel Engine. While Americans are warming up to Diesels more and more, they still on average choose diesel much less than gasoline options when both are offered, compared to other markets.
My brother in law lives in thailand and owns a ford everest which is basically a ranger suv. He has a 2.2 diesel. Not a power house but good torque pull. And according to him gets good millage.
So you're saying that rear seat legroom on the Supercab version is like coach class on Spirit Airlines?
Hahaha!
😄🤣😂😜👍😎✅
Go blue
As soon as these come to my dealer I'm after one! The ecoboost engines are awesome! My Fusion has one and I love it.
3:50 if you put an electric window back there it would just be another thing to break
Ya it is a ford
And raise the price a couple hundred bucks, we want to go the other way.
The ending was everything!
Micah with the best car vids in the biz. Hope all is well!
Micah, you're the best. Best reviewer because of your personality
Hey Micah, you're my favorite Auto reviewer/commentator online. Great video, and a gorgeous truck! I'm kinda stuck between an Escape and a Ranger for my next video.
I learned to drive using my dads old ranger I fell in love with it he later said I could keep it it was a good farm truck
We here in Australia get 3 diesel and no petrols. A 2.2, 3.2 and 2.0 twin turbo. Oh, and the raptor.
Elon Musk ‘The Raptor’, which has a pissweak 2ltr diesel in Australia. We are good at lots of things. Dick waving over engine choice is not one of them mate.
Lol we have the real raptor
R Soul Australians are good at not minding their own business aye?
No one wants a diesel here...We want the 2.7 liter ecoboost!
The 3.2 has been cancelled in Thailand due to Emissions. I suspect the same in Australia soon.
Great review
People hate on the Frontier, but it's a darn good midsize.
The 2019 Frontier is still the same design from 2005, not sure when they plan on an update.
Yes, very outdated.
The interior makes me want to puke, ugliest steering wheel I've ever seen on a vehicle.
Frontier is the last decent truck on the road. Comfortable, drives great, good durability, looks great inside and out. You can't beat a VQ40 with a 6spd manual for feel. Very responsive and powerful. By far my favorite truck of any size.
Yoco-Right...they may be old but they're capable and cheaper than any of the rest.
Awesome Review Of 2019 Ford Ranger. 😄
My '02 Ranger is still solid as a rock after 15+ years with barely more than minimum maintenance. After all this time I trust Ford and can't wait to upgrade to this bad boy!
what an amazing light truck!!
Does the stx package come with that rail rack thing ?
Or is that an add on
This is not a full-size truck, so I am fine with the 4-cylinder. I just wish I could get a manual transmission.
Only if majority of your fellow Americans also want stick. So far, about 2% of cars sold in the US are manual. Even in other countries, manuals are becoming rare with stick only being offered only on base models.
Yes! The manual transmission needs to offered.
The only company that offers a manual i here for newer vehicles coming out is dodge
Like i said its only what i heard. Id rather have a manual myself because it what im used to driver being a truck driver.
guy proulx Toyota removes most features from the manual version of their Tacomas. Plus you can’t get a manual in a long bed at all and dealers won’t hold manual inventory. So basically if you want a manual Taco you are forced to wait to get a worse truck. No wonder they sell so few.
Great review. Anxiously awaiting to see what Ford will do with the Ranger so I can decide if I want to get in line for a Bronco.
You mention a trailer brake controller, but I didn't see one on the dash, where is it located? And on the lower trim how do they accomplish trailer sway control without a TBC? With that much towing capacity, it would be nice to see the TBC on the lower trim levels too.
Well down review. Looks like a great start to the new ranger line
Ford biggest mistake was ditching it for 6 years. Now it's just an after thought.
They easily left a billion dollars on the table by doing that smh. Dumbest move ever.
It’s been continuously sold everywhere else except the US. This Ranger has been available in Europe for years. The Middle East too
I patiently waited with my 2009 till they came out, then I bought the first 2019 in this area, a beautiful black lariat ... but at 7500 miles I spun a rod bearing.. so ford did put in a new engine but I’m not trusting it much anymore.
I have a 2019 ranger and I'm getting a rattle noise from the dash area...anyone know what it may be?
I am really torn between the Ranger and the Colorado, I would prefer to have the transmission on the column, is there any plan to do that in the next year? And is the Ranger really quicker than the Chevy?
That woman keeps her word!
😎
The ranger four door i saw looks so much smaller in person..... unless they have different sizes?
“Oh boy! That is undamped!” @ 2:40 made me bust out in laughter...
one of the only decent reviews I can find of the ranger.
Sounds like Ford has their own version of a Trailhawk rated vehicle. Ranger with off-road package is awesome.
good review
Awesome review Micah, Cheers!
Great review. Funny and informative
The amount of apathy you injected into this is appreciated.
better payload than most full sizes.
datrelle g than all gas powered trucks.*
Worst reliability than most automobiles too
@@richicamacho7989 That sounded so intelligent since this truck is new. Get another hobby besides trolling
@@taurussho86 The brand in general, mijo.
@@richicamacho7989 you're joking right?
That crawl control cruise control whatever you wanna collect would be amazing when you’re doing desert trails you really can’t go over 20 miles an hour something on some of them they’re pretty rough you could set that and just have fun and you go long distances on those desert roads so I think it be great
Honestly, I wish you could still get a manual sliding window on the Super Duty so I could reach in the back and get a drink out of the cooler. It would be nice if we could get both options; you could manually open the back window or open it from the front, similar to automatic doors in a van.
Test drove an FX4 Lariat today and I liked it. Way more comfortable than the Tacoma I test drove and it drove much better too. I’ll look at the Colorado next but so far I’m liking the Ranger. It has enough tech to make me happy but not too much.
What type of adaptive cruise?
I love this guy
I really love this channel
does it come with sports bar?
Standard ranger nice good power I like it's new looks bigger than last one was made
WANT IT!!!
Ford Should have never given up on the old ranger. They were solid small trucks. For those that needs to move things around but didn't need to move a house and didn't need to move money out of their wallet.
It wasn't Ford that gave up on them..it was you and me. Folks were no longer buying that last gen Ranger, and were moving to the Tacoma. Sorry, that's just what happened.
Ford stopped making them because of market demands
Regis Riley ford never stopped making them in other markets it’s just you Americans
New ones won't be like the old ones. I liked those old rangers but I hate new Fords. All reliability nightmares.
Ranger was #1 selling truck in its class from the late 80s to 2011. They were number 1 with ZERO marketing for a long time. I was appalled when they gave us the stupid transit connect to replace it as a small work vehicle.
The guy doing the review really made it worth watching. Funny and he seems to have been very honest. And to Ford I must say Bravo! Ford seems to have done a really good job at bringing the Ranger back.
im buying one next month in April! Also going t buy a 18FT car hauler! Thanks for the new Ranger Ford! The 2.3L Ecoboost engine and 10spd Automatic was an excellent idea!!
@Micah good review, for Alexa you need to install Ford+Alexa app on your phone, login with Amazon account and connect to sync via BT (Android) or USB(iPhone). Then start Ford+Alexa app from Apps tab on SYNC
I test drove one of these but didn’t like that it didn’t come with bed lights like my Tacoma has plus the gauges looked smaller and harder to read on the one I tested (2019 XLT Lariat) than on the one in this video.
Dude, you’re hilarious. Your reviews are always fun to watch.
The front looks a bit like a small RAM, especially the headlights, just a bit right?
Got to drive one of these they're really good, comfortable ride and bumps are a breeze, ride height is about the same as the Tacoma all in all I love the ranger
This guy is really going off-roading with those sneakers
Excellent! This is the one of the best brands around the world.
I noticed that you reviewed both the crew and extended cab trim levels. However, I would have liked for you to compare the new extended cab versus the old extended cab (XLT model) Ranger. I'm interested in if there has been more leg room added since one's a midsize truck and the other is a compact pickup.
I've seen reviews that compare that. The midsize has a ton more room then the compact. Midsize has up to 3 seats. The old ranger had one sideways seat
The Ford Ranger is one of the most popular and commonly used utes here in New Zealand and Australia.
It's right up there with the Toyota Hilux and Holden Rodeo.
I would honesty estimate that half of consumer car buyers need no more than this truck.
No, 99.99% of the market WANTS something that can do more, but won’t ever utilize the capability.
That’s America’s truck market. Road princesses that’ll never get a hitch attached.
Very true
Gary Ross exactly
@Brian Waller It's been very much sufficient here in Australia, we don't consider the need for bigger.
The OP's comment should have the majority of the thumbs up for this video. There is a stark contrast between what a consumer actually needs and what they think they want. Just like we Americans put too much on our plates at the buffet, so too do we gorge ourselves on other things we don't actually need. But that seems to be the human condition...more is better.
Personally I’m really hoping the ranger is successful in the us
My grandfather had an old ranger
Hes since passed away and whenever i see a ranger old or new I look back at it and smile
10:00 Mich: "Alexa, justify your existence".
Alexa in Ranger: "....."
Alexa at my home: "For how long?"
wear do you do your videos? wear is the kelly blue book dealer?
Is it really against all things hoped to make a turbo diesel ranger? Also, can we get a compact truck from someone?
Nice end credits!
Thank you for mentioning little details that are big to car people like that you can shut off auto stop start!
how is it in the snow??
Can you show how an ATV fit in those 5ft truck beds? Thanks.
I can justify Alexa's existence in a few sentences: "Alexa, turn on the lights / arm my security / turn off the lights / turn the tv to channel 51 / turn on the oven / play music through my speaker system / etc.
Best ending ever
Now all we need is the Bronco II and Explorer on the chassis. The good old days
One of my favorite things about the new ranger is (compared to other newer trucks) there are still manual parts like the rear window and the tailgate. All the pointless technology is not needed. Now I don’t mean the 4wd or computer screen, I mean stuff like a power tailgate or power rear window. That’s just more complicated and unneeded tech. I prefer more hands on accessories. Less stuff to break or go bad. They balanced the technology good on the ranger. I’d get one if I had the money
The bed (as well as many other spots) is where the Ridgeline beats all other mid-size trucks. No wheel wells gives you much more room.
I almost lost it with Mica driving with that wig on. I love his reviews.
I'm not a ford guy but for some reason I really like this truck and will give it a shot if I'm shopping for a mid size truck
2:33 had me dying of laughter
I am only getting 18 mpg with my 2019 supercab so far with easy on the throttle driving. When towing a small trailer I get about 13 mpg on mostly flat roads. I got better MPG with my 2003 Tundra.
drive better. I am getting 25.8 in my supercab 4x4
Second time I've looked at a video where it seems like the rear seats don't lock up to put something under them. If so that's ridiculous.
"All important sticker." literally died lol
Im 6 ft tall and about 195 lbs. How roomy do you think itd be for someone of my size
great personality
Did anyone mention MPG?
Fx4 lariat supercrew with sport appearance package in Lightning blue is what I landed on. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the suspension. Too much bounce too much rake. A set of fox shocks, 265/70/17 tires and a Ford performance tune in place for next year. I've no complaints buying a used 2019 whatsoever. Absolutely love the truck.
I can't believe we have vehicles available new right now that are low end enough so that cruise control is an option, yet also offers a B&O sound system.
Single cab, manual trans, larger fuel tank (comes with tiny 18gal)
4:56 I wonder what he meant when he said "Oh yeah well you like it"?🤔😂
I still have my 2002 Ford Ranger with manual transmission. I bought it brand new
I own one! XLT 4X4 Mine was purchased in 2020. It was brand new. My truck flies down the road!
if this was available when I bought my 2015 f150 4x4 with 2.7l ecoboost, I would have gotten the ranger... but, then I wouldn't have gotten the 2.7l (which is awesome!). if the 2.7 was offered in the ranger, I think it would set a new standard.
I wish Ford made something that looked as good as a Raptor but, without all the extra shit that no one needs. The only technology I want in a truck is a radio with a cd player. I'd actually prefer manual windows as well.
I need Android Auto CDs are to much of a hassle
Ha my friend rode in my 96 ranger and was freaked out I had rolldown windows. Never saw one in their life!
I said well if we ever fly off a bridge Into a river we will get out alive! Love the old stuff I still have a working 40h.p Force outboard.
You probably crave a bench seat too
Just get an xl then.
I like it.
"This all important sticker". Love your host.
Tailgate what's the gas mileage I sat in an xlt
