    Julian is the man I see and feel as my saviour, this mans influence on my own recovery can’t be overstated. I’m now living my life without hearing my own Tinnitus, sometimes it returns but rarely and when it does it’s at such a low level it no longer impacts on my life. Anyone new to Tinnitus please please listen to Julian’s advice. Best wishes to all.

If it's physiological, then yes i believe anxiety will get us engaged in fight or flight system all the time. what if we are super calm and the T is still ringing? 🥲 (i am not being negative, just confused and scared with all of this new experience of having non stop T out of no where)

    The first 3 weeks I had tinnitus it was level 2. I didn't even know what it was or what I had. When the doctor told me I had tinnitus and that there was no cure my tinnitus skyrocketed to level 8 overnight. This illustrates how powerful the "psychological factors" of tinnitus are. I believe tinnitus is 90% to 100% psychological in nature. In short, I believe tinnitus is a physical manifestation of stress.

    I got my tinnitus after I completely loss sound in my right ear from a middle ear infection in august of last year. the sound came back but it returned with tinnitus. a few weeks before I found you, it showed up in my left ear from me listening out for it and worrying about getting it in my left ear (crazy right?). all I can say is I’m beyond grateful for your existence. for the first time in months I woke up in a period of blissful silence. when I found your channel 2 weeks ago and saw how the majority of people who get tinnitus actually do recover, it gave me hope and even calmed it down right then and there. plus it changed my perception of tinnitus instantly. I started to look at it for what it is, not a threat but a stressometer, and started doing what I could to lessen the inflammation in the nervous system which is the root cause of all dis-ease in the body. I started meditating when I got the chance (in the shower, my room, while laying in bed, sitting in a chair, etc..) started directing my awareness to the body more. i got your app yesterday and did the clench and release exercise, which made me fall asleep so quickly. I woke up refreshed and in a brief moment of silence for the first time today. even the ringing is lower and more distant in silent areas. its starting to fade quickly and I love it. it was annoying for months. I started journaling my progress, I feel like it’ll be gone before spring or summer 😢💙

    I think this is the best video I've seen you post Julian. This is the one I would link to anyone that has developed tinnitus, as it explains so much in such a concise way. I would like to add to this that self compassion is an important tool to deal with anxiety (after all - this is the enemy of tinnitus). Change your internal monologue to positive reinforcing what's good about you. It makes a real difference to see that in the end we are amazing people dealing with challenging stuff and *coping*. As soon as you have real love for yourself you start to see the inner turmoil diminish. Great positive video. Thank you. x

      I don't necessarily think of silence as 'better'. Sorry to repeat it, but for years it really had no connection to me. Every once in awhile I'd notice it there, but for ages it just didn't click in. Think of it this way, you live in a suburb close to a main highway. As long as you live in that house you NEVER will get away from teh sound of traffic. Sometimes its more, sometimes its less but its always there, and ALL those people 'suffer' with it more than some with tinnitus.
      The suffering part is when your brain is triggered. To my mind getting 'better' is not having that triggered. Ironically I was joking with my wife that we moved to a rural area but were still fairly close to a main highway so at night I always heard cars. I was used to it though, so it didn't bother me. I got sick and for some reason the tinnitus trigger went off and it bugged me again, and weirdly enough the traffic from the highway stopped! Just when it would have come in handy as white noise! C'est la vie. But its two weeks and I'm already back to not being bothered by it at least 97% of the time. Not that I WANT it, but for the most part its no different than the people that live by a highway. And just imagine those who live by an airport or railroad!:)
      PS, my wife did say she had it for a couple of days, then it went away or else she stopped listening for it.

    • @Aurelius4114
      @Aurelius4114 Před 4 lety +5

      Mine is a long story but essentially I have gone from really loud T in one ear to complete silence except now and again at night in bed. Total silence in the day though. 2.5 years in total with loads of ups and downs. Stopped thinking about it after a while. Deep down i knew it was being created by me and for that reason i knew i coukd uncreate it and slowly it stopped bothering me. only then did it start getting better. more time went by and then it went from very low to silent once I started the carnivore diet and working out.
      Stress, inflammation, adrenal fatigue, lack of sleep and a very negative internal monologue started it all and reversing all that stopped it.
      Also the above comment is spot on! What happened before it got better was it didn't trigger my emotions anymore. It went from extreme fear inducing to just a thought in my head. Hard to explain but once that happened I really didn't care if it stayed or went. Its like it went from occuoying 90% of my head to a distant 1% somewhere over there where i didnt care about. That was before the volume lowered too. The only reason I went full on with the diet etc. Is because I had a ton of other physical symptoms. All have which have gone now. All the best!

      @mikearchibald744 Před 4 lety +1

      @@Aurelius4114 Good on you, although I don't want people to think that they have 'failed' if they try certain things and it doesn't help. Mine is from a physical injury, same with lots of people. It doesn't go away, but yes, you can stop 'listening' for it, thats what I meant by 'getting better'.
      But everybody is different and Tinnitus is different in everybody.

    A truly great video Julian, as always your words are both comforting and also make a lot of sense. I’ve had tinnitus for over 30 years now and over that time I’ve learnt to recognise the general pattern that increased stress in life will appear to increase the perceived volume of the tinnitus. As Julian explains what’s really happening is the tinnitus level wherever it is generated in the auditory system probably stays much the same but when the mind is under threat from general stress it looks for a reason to be afraid - i.e. the flight or fight mechanism. The brain sees tinnitus as the biggest threat ie. the tiger in the room, and not whatever is really creating the stress in your life and therefore ramps it up to a new level. The crucial thing is to learn body based techniques to relax and remove stress from your life as much as possible and this will in turn lower the tinnitus so it’s much more in the background and sometimes can disappear all together. Keep up the awesome work Julian!

      Agree about the app. It offers things slightly different from CZcams. You can go from one video to the next alot easier than youtube. I still love to see everytime he puts a new video and youtube and watch the others whenever I need a refresher. . I learn something different each and really every thing he teaches is a piece of what I have experienced. The app for me is very convenient and it's also a way that I can repay him for all that he has done. There is nobody on CZcams or in the world that I know of like him. He truly saved me from going into completely misery, despair, panic, etc. Now if I can just be more disciplined and really schedule well being into my life I could completely get better. I'm always waiting until I finish this task or do that.
      Also, I wanted to note that I read his book , The Long Tide to Silence. I enjoyed it very much and by learning the intricacies of his experience I am able to have a point of reference for things in my life. It's a very enjoyable book to read and interesting to learn about his life and the things he did before immersing himself into well being. I have high pitch tinnitus 5 months now, and it's slowly getting better. I quit alcohol, coffein, start playing guitar again and learn to live in more positive way. Good luck! You just need time to recover from something.

      Chris Cross my spike has calmed down quite a bit. I started at a one spiked to what seemed to me 100 and I am back down to a 3/4. I had to go in Valium because I couldn’t calm down I was living on adrenaline for a month. It took awhile for the Valium to work. But it did. I don’t take it every day. Now that it’s been four months I now have an issue called telogen effluvium. Basically the stress of that event is causing my hair to fall out. It will grow back but it’s distressing for sure. Recommend you watch your diet. I don’t drink any alcohol ever. I switched to decaf. I eat basically meat and veggies. Lots of water. And I take a cocktail of supplements.

    My tinnitus comes from stupidly self-inflicted hearing damage. I get the sense that it really isn't as bad as what many people experience but I am frequently distracted while trying to read or write in a quiet environment. I am full of a lot of regret over the damage I caused and wish I could go back to the peace of lying in a bed quietly on a weekend morning. In particular I worry that I won't be able to pursue study goals because of my distraction I experience and that I will not be able to achieve in the way I used to - would love some reassurance from someone out there!

    Hello Julian,
    I have had tinnitus for 6 months. I have experienced a lot during this time and I have not always been able to focus on my recovery. My tinnitus most likely came from a prolonged period of permanent tension, anxiety and stress over the last few years. I bought your book (from tinnitus to friend) and it has already helped me a lot. My tinnitus is now often at a 3/10.
    I am coming off medication and my nervous system is under additional stress and the tinnitus is coming back into focus. Do you have any tips for me on how to deal with this during this time, as I don't really know where to start at the moment? I also wanted to ask if you know the ACT principle, Dr. Russ Harris and the topic of mindfulness?
    I would be very happy to receive an answer
    Merry Christmas

    Julian, my right side of head above ear hurts, it's like painful vibration, it's not just a ringing for me, it's painful brain, i'm curious on how many different branches of tinnitus there's maybe someone overuser drugs, someone had a car accident, someone listened to loud music for too long, they all seem so different , and that tinnitus must be completely different thing, are you sure your generalization is right about it being nervous system problem ? i aggree with you that you need to have super healthy pumping fast blood body, sauna, weight lifting, hiking, something to put your body into sweating crazy relaxation mode

    Hi Julian,
    This is a question I’m sure a few of your subscribers would like to be clear of.
    I’ve had T for 14 months mainly right ear with 24/7 static hiss. I’ve have a 50 db 4K audio notch in both ears so been told this is noise induced HL. I got this from a dental hygienist btw.
    So with a case like mine ( as opposed to stress induced T) does your model of recovery ie silence be realistic ? Secondly out of all of your successes treating patients how many of them had hearing loss ..? Thank you for your great channel - we all appreciate it :)

    • @JulianCowanHill
      @JulianCowanHill  Před 4 lety +3

      This is a common question. Yes even if it is noise-induced the tinnitus can still go away. Want you want is for your nervous system to realise that this is not a threatening or important sound anymore. So becoming indifferent, and switching off and relaxing and not paying attention to it, the filters and inhibitors start switching on again and ignoring this background buzz. Essentially if it is not important we do not need to perceive it. There are a thousand other things that are more important. Normally our attention is incredibly selective and very good at only noticing what matters.

    I've had tinnitus for over 40 years due to loud noise exposure. Since I know what caused it, and I've been living with it for so long, it really doesn't seem threatening. However, I've noticed that in recent months, the tinnitus has become more pronounced. I don't know if that is in response to more age-related hearing loss or what. I'm hoping that Julian's videos can help me deal with this, even though I feel like I have very little anxiety about it already.

      All my videos refer to approaches to tinnitus in line with THE JASTREBOFF MODEL which you can find on-line. This is not my theory - rather what I have learned from clinical practice and working with nearly 1000 tinnitus people. Probably best to start with my App which is the latest information on what helps tinnitus done recently - eg the most up to date. You can find it here: www.quietenapp.com/

    Hello Julian, I have found that any kind of negative thoughts (doubt, fear of the future, catastrophising) often trigger negative emotions and feelings which in turn trigger more negative thoughts.... a negative cycle is created.
    This in turn causes permanent tension and at some point such symptoms and TT follow.
    I have already understood quite well how to get out of TT, also with your help.Now for my question: How can I dissolve the causes of TT (negative thoughts, anxious thoughts, compulsions, constant brooding) and do you have experience with this?
    (I am taking advantage of behavioural therapy).
    I would be very grateful for an answe

      @JulianCowanHill  Před 3 lety +4

      The whole of my app Quieten: www.quietenapp.com is about changing our mindset and understanding into a more positive and productive approach. People can be very hostile at first. Just this morning I had this comment from Jeffrey Hinkel: "This guy is so full of shit his eyes are brown." Clearly if we are swimming in our own negativity we can spray this onto anything and everything, even things that can help us. If we are full of it, then our world becomes full of it. But when we come out of fight or flight and settle, symptoms get better. Learning to self-soothe and getting help to settle helps a lot. So please get help from the host of body-based therapists out there to really switch off properly. This approach is not a quick fix, it is more of a gradual journey. If, by TT, you are referring to Tensor Tympani Syndrome please have a lot at my video on how facial massage and yawning has a big impact on relaxing the tense and twitchy tensor tympani and stapedius muscles that can calm this condition down. Hope this helps, best wishes Julian

    Thank you Julian for your videos. When i got my tinnitus 6 weeks ago, it was the negative information from doctors and the internet that drove me crazy. a quiet tinnitus that did not previously bother became a very strong one with several tones. today i have days with a very quite tinnitus then come days, it is very strong again. I still don't know how to calm my body. do you have an answer: when the tinnitus is very loud again I hear mp3 at night. then i wake up and my brain ignores the music (i do not hear it when i wake up) and the tinnitus is very loud.

      Its called a tinnitus spike. I was in your situation. Jullian explained it in one of his videos. These loud spikes will happen more but dont worry. Little by little they will desappear and you'll have longer periods of silence. Check this video czcams.com/video/TM1rkA1IqrA/video.html

      I always find my tinnitus gets worse around noon and until bedtime. Not really as 'spikes' but simply louder in volume. I also notice the volume tends to have a lot to do with diet. The list is long, but I remember no caffeine, no alcohol, and sugar definitely ramps it up. I drink decaf and have chocolate in the morning or noon if I'm going to have it. But yeah, the first six weeks were the worst, and doctors blowing you off doesn't help.
      BODY calming is a lot easier than brain calming I find. Exercise exercise exercise. Stretching, yoga, more stretching. HUGE difference before bed. I like exercise workout videos like amy dixon because there is music and lots of talking and lots of exercise. Then yoga stretching. We have a pellet stove with a fan so there's white noise from that. Initially you should try to have noise going as much as possible. If I remember correctly its finding the 'right' white noise, I think they say matching the frequency is the best way to do it. Some sounds I found would make it worse, bass usually helps. I have cats and about the best thing in the world is to lay on a big cats tummy and have the purring echo right through your head, thats absolute bliss for me. I have some on mp3 and its pretty close to the same thing, just have to turn it up a little louder.

And developed hyperacusis on top.. this doesn't bother me as much but.. sometimes when my T actually is low and I go into a quiet room, the "sound of silence" increases to a loud static feeling like my ears fill with vacuum. Is this also tinnitus or is it hyperacusis?
