    The Astra 400... bigger than the 300... not quite as potent as the 600... Firing either the 9mm Largo or .38 ACP, the 400 was selected by the Spanish government to replace the Campo-Giro in military service in 1921. It may not be the prettiest of guns, but it still carries a certain art-deco flare. And its dead simple straight blowback action runs like a champ!

    Judge Bean, I am a proud owner of an early production Astra 1921. I have owned this gun for over 5-decades, purchased from a friend back in the late 1960's, for the measly sum of 40-dollars. That was a lot of money for both of us in that great time period. For years it was my only handgun until I joined the local PD as a rookie cop. Now the Astra 400 aka: 1921 is chambered for the 9X23 Largo Round, a pretty hot cartridge itself, but outside surplus Largo ammo, that was hard to get, the fellow I purchased my Astra from had told me that if the 9X23 Largo ammo was not available, it would cycle and fire the 9X19 hardball ammo that could be bought in many places. My friend, the former owner, had told me that he had even got his Astra to cycle and feed the .380 acp. I was astounded to hear this and didn't really believe it until I tested both for my own well being. I loaded six-rounds of regular 9mm ammo (9X19 FMJ) into the magazine, slam the magazine into the pistol, cranked back that "stiff ass" slide into battery, then put 6-rounds into the bullseye of the target at 10-yards away.My Astra 400 cycled those 9mm cartridges like it was chambered for them. Next, I took six-rounds of .380 acp and did likewise with those. Two rounds got fired before stove-piping. It would fire a .380 maybe once or twice before jamming rakes place, but in an emergency (zombie horde) you can use it for a 1 or 2-shot fire. The regular 9mm hard ball military ammo worked fine. Never did I make a habit of shooting my Astra with anything but the designed cartridge (9X23 Largo). After joining the PD, I would carry my Astra 400 as a back-up to my issued Smith & Wesson Model 10 Revolver. I carried a tough and rugged war bag that held assorted police equipment needed for duty work.In the canvas bag was my Astra 400 Pistol, charged with a 7-round magazine. It was kept in a water proof zip-up handgun bag, along with some spare 9X23 Largo ammo. My gun rug was secured inside my war bag and kept in the front seat floor board. I had my Astra cerekoted black a while back, along with replacement grips and a black rubber Hogue sleeve, with finger-grooves cut in. A perfect fit for my hand. After a few years had past, I purchased a very economical back-up snubby, a Charter Arms Undercoverette. A six-shot .32 long, that would ride with me on my ankle for the rest of my career. I hung on to my Astra, realizing that the Model 1921 was engineered and built by some of the world's greatest firearm craftsmen at the Astra Company. Much, much old world craftsmanship is evident to the trained eye of firearms.

    Great video. I just bought one of these online this week, and was looking for videos on how to take it apart. You're is about the best one I have found. I especially appreciate the way you show how to take off the bushing cap on the muzzle end. That can be a bit tricky. I tried your technique, though, and it worked great. I might mention that someone else had said you can use a 50 cal empty brass to push in the bushing. I happen to have one, a souvenir from my days in the military, and it works well. You used a plastic pen, and made it work, but the 50 cal brass fits exactly.
    To remove the barrel from the slide, I measured and found that if the barrel is sticking out exactly 1 3/4 inches from the slide, then that's the spot where you can rotate the barrel up out of the lugs in the frame, then the slide will come off. You may have to move it back and forth a bit, but notes like that help the next time I try to take it apart.
    Nice video. Thanks again for providing it!

    Hello Astra fans, got a Astra 400, 91*** serial number, I with pomegranate on the trigger guard. Trying to date it but I cannot find a date code. Even looked under the grips but all there is the 3 of the serial numbers. It appears to be from the Franco era, but that's all I can determine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Is 38a safe to fire in any gun chambered in 9mm largo or just that model astra? Wondering since I have a llama extra and dont really want to use more of my stored ammo until i can pick up some expendable boxes.

      I would not ever shoot a round through a gun that isnt specifically stamped on it. This Astra 400 specifically has 38 and 9mm largo stamped on it, though even that might not be with the intent of firing 38acp.

    I heard that this is a gun that should never be dry-fired.
    So, when it is cocked, how you decock it? (as there is no de-cocker).

    • @judgeroybean6231
      @judgeroybean6231  Před rokem +1

      There is no way to decock it. You could use a snap cap or other dummy round to safely dry fire it, but that is about the only option I can think of.

      Eso mismo iba a poner, el nombre exacto de la pieza es retenida de la corredera.
      Se retrasa a tope la corredera, se activa la retenida y se empuja hasta que bloquee, en ese punto se alinea con la mortaja de la corredera.
