I might be mistaken, but I vaguely recall that after LR Time's analysis that the crank snap is a result of repeated oil starvation at start up due to the wrong grade of oil being used for the climate. LR Time's recommendation differs from the manual if I remember correctly.
It’s the 3 litres that snap more than the 2.7s

The older 2.7 ones seem to be much better than the later ones in that regard. I wouldn’t be surprised if they never have that issue.

I sold my D4 because it just seemed like there was an endless stream of preventative (and reactive) maintenance to worry about. I replaced it with a Lexus RX and to be fair, I have had to top up the screen wash. 10 year warranty certainly gives peace of mind. Obviously it’s not going off road, but that’s what the new Land Cruiser will be for. I feel your pain.

I'm in love with discovery 3's and 4's and when I needed to get a big 4 wheel drive I was so close to getting one. The only reason I stopped myself was because of the reliability. I ended up with a 2021 ssangyong rexton and am real happy but I'm still in love with the discovery
There are 2 ways to look at that, the rex will be a pig in a poke for residual and if you need bits you are going to the stealer. So you either do that or get a landrover and feed it parts and labour, either way it's big money.
had this car as a rental in latvia and really enjoyed it for its incredibly smooth ride and huge comfort - could easily sleep in it with two 190cm persons. just glad it was just a rental.

Or go for the one with the n22 diesel lump in it I-cdti which will remap to 193bhp with 440nm easily stage 1 could do loads to then return good mpg too.
I change the oil on my D4 SDV6 every 6 months, but the car is on 147,000m miles and hasn't really had an issue except regular maintenance. If you buy a good one to begin with I think your problems will be limited the same as any other brand.
Bought a 42k mile 15 plate 4.4 Range Rover 1 owner full history,
Have had it 3 years and got maintaince and repair invoices of plus £16,000 in 3 years. It’s just gone in for another fault on the air suspension.
The little £1200 and £2900 invoices soon add up.
I absolutely love the car but it does grind on you after a while your allways knowing something is going to pop up.
Got a few other cars and never get that feeling and they cost F all to run and repair 😂

If 3.5 tonne towing capacity wasn't a requirement, a good alternative for Discovery 3 as a camera car would've been og Volvo XC90 (mk1/P2 chassis) ;)

Exactly the same happened to my I bought a 2006 D3 for £7,000 about 5 years ago owned it for 3 years and spent over £6800 on keeping it mobile, much of that cost was the TC like yours was
This was the worst car for owning but the best car ever to drive for comfort and chucking stuff in it
I had a Disco 3 (LR3 in the US) and it was my favorite car but cost me a fortune to keep on the road. I sold it for basically nothing and I regret it all the time. They are the best trucks.
Do they not have jeep Grand Cherokees in the UK they tow well and if you avoid the 4.7 V8 they are very reliable

Try doing a double flush of the gearbox oil we use to do it back in my dealership days fixed 80% of gearbox's bit pricey tho the oils about £15 a ltr

Crazy how easy it was to remove the plastic cover for the head unit. Some poor sod glued the shit out of the plastic latches and vents on my R32 - they all went flying when I replaced the unit...

It’s a phenomenal vehicle, I bought one for £2k it’s now on 213,000miles and I’ve only had to service gearbox best car I’ve ever owned
