      @@stazang I think it is overall, from what I understood he said he wasn't going to do it because it would take around a year for it to come and by that point with the little money he would save by having them do it, it wouldn't make a difference. Unless I am wrong on the reason for it

    Let me say this. Adam is the biggest geek on earth. I say that in the most positive way possible. What he has done is doing with that wiring harness is beyond impossible. To be able to look at the ruined one and then think he can make his own is unreal. I wish my mind worked like his. To me this is by far the most amazing accomplishment of this whole project. Adam your are insane. It’s not just the fact you can make one. It’s the time and how tedious it must be not to mention what would happen if you make one little error during it. Adam my man you deserve the first drive of this car once it’s finally done.

      It's not impossible cos he's doing it, and he's not making one from scratch, what he's doing is putting 2 wiring harness to work with a third system for which one is very similar to the third. He's very intelligent and a professional but not an impossible task. The greatest difficulty here is figuring what to move where, else anyone can take on the challenge. I've seen people build custom wiring harness to add or modify features on a car, this is no different.

      I never said it was easy or I'm not impressed, you said it was impossible, but he's actually doing it so it's not impossible. My 2nd point was he's not building one from scratch, like you said. He's modifying 2 systems to make a custom system. Who wouldn't be impressed? I did say he was intelligent and a professional, pls comprehend what I said. I'm not hating.

    The *confidence* it takes to take on such a project ! A complete wiring harness from scratch for an entire Supercar that is supposed to become the fastest McLaren ever.
    That takes a lot of courage, even if you have the skills and the experience. I admire him for that.

    As a guy who has spent most of my professional life building, and wiring, machines, I can appreciate the magnitude of this entirely! Combining, and cleaning up all the grounding is probably one of the smartest things you can do to insure reliability down the road. I've had nightmares with CAN systems because of grounding, and poor connector continuity (either from construction or corrosion over time). If a signal gets dropped, or lost due to a resistance change, the node just disappears, and won't come back until the system is rebooted... That's part of that mystery magic you see in a lot of these exotics where they shut off the car after an issue, disconnect the battery, wait, then it suddenly works... anyway, those Amphenol connectors are killer; great choice! Fantastic job guys!

    I used to build electrical harnesses for an aerospace/defense contractor, it was quite stressful at times, but nothing was quite as satisfying as doing the final continuity test and every contact on every connector got that beautiful beep lol

      We use a CIRRIS tester at my work, so when he mentioned testing every pin by hand that was my first thought. But then I remembered that you'd have to make test cables with corresponding connectors for the entire harness, plus you'd have to create the test program, which would essentially mean doing this whole project twice.

      @@mrflippant Yeah we had quite a few of the same harnesses that got built quite frequently, so we used the CIRRIS for those, but we also did a lot of one-offs, so those all got hand tested since making the test harnesses and programs was no small feat in itself.

      Would be a good idea to seal the bulkhead connectors to ensure the surface will not allow water ingression. These bulk head connectors will allow to ring out the harness in sections too. Do a full continuity test per pin.

      there is noway they do harnessing on site, they just buy it from a sub contractor in Asia or something like that.

    Once you understand the amount of work that goes into even a simple body harness swap, this looks like even more immense project! Now you have to graft multiple chassis models into one working harness with no communication issues or faults, not to mention the coding involved. Mind blowing Man! When this car is done it’ll stand tall next to any other legendary McLaren IMHO, including the famed F1. This will be a 1/1 in history and I’m here wide eyed to see it! 😮

    The wiring loom guy is truly a master if his craft. I fully understand what is involved, and can only take my hat off to him for embarking on this epic journey. Sectioning the loom is what McLaren should have done in the first place.

    I am a wiring geek and I approve of this video! I also want to say how much I appreciate you calling out the differences between power ground and signal ground!! I couldn't imagine trying to troubleshoot the issues that you would run into if you proceeded on the assumption that "well, ground is ground" and tied things together!! Pure nightmare! Lastly, I am not going to be surprised that from an electrical standpoint, it will work but I will be amazed! The only thing I have to say after that is good luck coding the control units to make it all work in harmony!!

      Is it weird that I would actually LOVE to tackle a project like this?? Genuinely, I could just get completely lost in it for months and when it was done, I'd probably feel a little sad.
      Coding the control units is going to be a whole other project, too. It won't be anything like having a tuner make a few tweaks here and there; you're probably talking at least some bare-metal coding of microcontrollers. Weeeeeeee!!! :D

      Now, wouldn't a signal ground be directly connected to the module though? I built a CNC table from scratch and nothing is grounded to the frame. Every sensor or trigger is a closed loop back to the breakout board. Each pin out, has its own ground next to it.
      Now in the board, and software, you can wiring up all the homing switches in series to 1 pin. How the software remembers which switch is thrown I never could wrap my head around so I had enough pins so I wired each switch to its own pin. If something malfunctioned, I could isolate the problem switch immediately. Sure it meant 2 wires to each switch but 22 ga wire was cheap.

      I was going to make a similar post - a ground is NOT always just a ground. Changing the location of the fuse box could also introduce some gremlins for a variety of reasons, wire length, EMI/RFI, etc. These sorts of projects rarely go perfectly smoothly - hope it works out, but we could see some interesting troubleshooting videos in the future.

      I doubt he is doing this for free. Maybe at a reduced rate for a friend but the hours ... the hours. If he were charging his "regular" rate I'm sure it would not be fiscally practical to get this nightmare harness made. Better to order from factory and wait the year for it.

    I am working as process engineer in cable harness manufacturing, and when I see this challenge, I think "WÆÆH". Reverse engineering and manufacturing is 3 times more difficult than manufacturing from drawings and this a pretty large cable tree, which is realistically hundreds of engineering hours + sourcing + manufacture. I'm impressed, boys! This is a serious one!

      How much of the process once design is finalized is automated? Because the millions of new cars built every year you have to have a way to pump them out enmasse to keep up with demand

      @@17semprfi A lot less than you might think. Cutting, labeling and crimping individual wires is largely automated, but for mounting the harness there's a lot of elbow grease and skillful handwork involved. Also, only one side can be crimped automatically, since the other end needs to be cut to exact length and crimped during mounting.

    I once made and rewired a vintage lorry and it worked it was a nightmare as the drawings I worked with were incomplete also I had to update it to 12v and that was child's play compared to this. Adam hats off to you.

    I would have started this project by creating a bed of nails board to fit to the original wiring harness, then modify it to the new connector placement requirements, then build the new harness on that bed of nails board. All in the electronics industry, complex wiring harnesses are built on bed of nails fixtures, for every kind of device up to large aircraft harnesses.

    I breathed a sigh of relief when you acknowledged your understanding of the grounds and their need to be separate. Typically, when you see twisted pair, it's communicating via a databus esc protocol. Unless you've worked on, or spent countless hours troubleshooting anomalies, you may not understand the frustration grounds can cause. There are circumstances where only one end of the wire is grounded while the other is simply terminated & if your night shift counterpart mistakenly grounds it w/out you knowing, an entire system will stop transmitting/receiving. Look for those mil-spec connectors on surplus sites, likely save you a fortune. I can't wait to see this thing finished.

    The splitting of the cable into sections with those fancy connectors seems like a very smart move.

    Once upon a time, years ago I was tasked with building a tamperproof wiring harness for a Bahamian rental car business, That was Nothing like the complexity of what Adam is doing, but it was significant given the technology of the day and components available in the Bahamas. Kudos to you both!
