How did a Toy Maker become World Famous.

  • Frank Whittington's "Forest Toys" were hand made in his small factory located behind his home in Brockenhurst, Hampshire UK. The factory started at the end of World War I and continued until the start of World II.
Forest Toys attracted visitors from all over the world who would flood in to Brockenhurst in the New Forest to see the toys being made and buy them.
After it shut Frank and his toys have been largely forgotten but many still exist all over the world and have to collectors they have become very sort after.
    About Jack's Country:
I used to work as and editor on Out of Town with Jack Hargreaves and then went on to make 60 programmes with him called Old Country for Channel 4 as producer/editor.
Jack mainly lived in Hampshire and Dorset and most of his programmes were shot in these two counties. They told the day to day life in the countryside and introduced us to many of the country crafts that still existed in those days.
I am making a series of films on CZcams about the subjects that Jack would have included in his TV programmes. I am not trying to recreate Out of Town or Old Country as this would be impossible without Jack's wonderful story telling but what I am hoping to do is make films on subjects that Jack may have chosen to make programmes on.
I do hope you enjoy them and if you have any suggestions on subjects you would like to be covered please let me know in the comments section.

Absolutely delightful video. I love the pace and the logical flow compared with today's TV where things are so chopped up to try and keep the attention of people without the will or ability to attend to a story line. This was heaven! I'm not even that interested in the toys but the people's accounts kept me gripped, along with the close ups of the individual items. I loved the old ?romany caravan with the 2 figures and the horse. Thankyou.

What a lovely comment Julie. I have just had an evening meal with Andrew and his wife and we were talking about the films I am making with him on the New Forest and saying that they just need to tell a story and have a beginning, middle and end and straight forward story telling wins the day.

Always amazes me how many things I have never heard of, in spite of being a keen collector of many things!
The enterprise people showed, back when the 'helping hand of government' was not the cudgel of today, is something we have lost - replaced by the cold professionalism of bland conformity, devoid of soul - mass-produced, briefly liked, then adding to our already groaning landfill sites.

@@EnglishCountryLife I have been going through ideas this afternoon and I think I’ve come up with a few that should be great if I can track down some interviewees. So far I have about 10 which is probably more than I can handle in a year as they do take quite a time to make. The New Forest Toys took around 2 weeks of editing as I had to find a lot of overlay material and it was few and far between. For instance I have used every photo of Frank that is available.
