All the animals are fascinating and its always lovely to see a great little creature like the mouse/wood mouse.
People should pay more attention to rats, they are fascinating to watch and successful for many reasons, intelligence being one of them. All the animals looked like they were thriving
especially the "rotund" magpies !

We moved from Dorset to East Sussex in 2022, and our garden now backs onto a wood. We’ve been suspecting that badgers visit our garden at night, because of diggings in the lawn, larger than those made by the squirrels. Our son bought me a trail cam for Christmas, and I set it up last night. This morning, it revealed a fox visiting our garden, and then squeezing under our fence into our neighbour’s garden. We hear tawny owls in the wood at night, and hope that they keep down the rat population; on the day that we moved into our new home, we were greeted by the sight of a very large, very dead rat lying on the garden path, and I’ve seen them running along the top of our fence in the daytime. We’ve seen a wider variety of birds on our feeders and in the woods than anywhere we’ve lived before. Thank you for uploading this most interesting video, and for the Jack Hargreaves videos, which bring back happy memories of watching his programmes on TV many years ago. One thing I’m wondering is whether you ever see glow worms? About 50 years ago, a friend and I went from Highcliffe to Southampton on his motorcycle one evening. When it was time to return home, we discovered that his bike had a puncture in the rear tyre, and in the absence of the means to repair it, and it being nearly midnight, we decided that we’d have to walk the 20-odd miles home. Having passed through Lyndhurst, we were walking along the main road through the Forest, and we were surprised to see the lights of many glow worms in the grassy clearings. This wasn’t the end of our experiences that night, for we were finally successful in thumbing a lift with one of the few cars passing at that time of night. My pal and I didn’t discover until we were wedged in the back seat of the tiny mini, that the driver was decidedly drunk. He then proceeded to treat two terrified motorcyclists to a display of the full performance of his car, and to his distinctly-impaired driving skills. All-in-all, a most memorable night!
Neil thank you taking time to share your story. I am sure you will learn a lot more now you have a trail camera. As for the rats we have a huge number in the garden but as they are everywhere I do not let them worry me too much. As for glow worms I have rarely seen them but as far as I know they are still around. I did learn something about their larvae the other days. It would seem that they are predators, feeding on slugs and snails. The way that they kill their prey is by toxic bites which inject digestive proteins into it prey causing it t dissolve. While it waits for it to happen it often rides on the back of its prey. Sorry for the gruesome tale but that’s nature I suppose. Happy New Year.
@@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker Thank you Dave. Rats don’t bother me, apart from the risk of Weil’s disease, but my wife absolutely loathes and fears rats and mice. I was looking forward to developing the garden to attract wildlife, but that hasn’t proved necessary, since we seem to have been visited by everything short of deer. A mole arrived in our front garden shortly after we moved in, and my wife counted over 40 mole hills in the lawn. The little chap moved on eventually, but the lawn still looks like the front line of the Somme! I was interested to hear about the feeding habits of the glow worm larva; being slowly digested while still alive is a particularly grim fate.

Dave, where I live in Germany, there are plenty of animals that visit my garden. These include Pine Martins, Green Woodpeckers Jays, and so on. Perhaps I can persuade my wife to allow me to spend some cash on a camera or two.

Saw a Roe deer in the cow parsley last summer.. walking to swimming lessons with my grandson, right next to a retail park in Sheffield, about 11 o'clock in the morning
They are lovely creatures aren’t they. I was amazed to see them living at the bottom of our garden. Happy New Year.

@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker I know that you're right, Dave. It's just a shame that the modern attention span is so miniscule. I guess it's my age, which makes me more amenable to longer videos. I'll happily watch a 2-3 hour video if the content is high quality. The Hypohystericalhistory channel has done some great videos of that length.

We used to have family camping holidays in the New Forest in the 60s so remember Ringwood with it's cattle market, there used to be a big hotel which went when the bypass went thru, a special place, glad the Avon is still flowing and the barbell still there!
@@eastsussexbeesandwildlife5801 The cattle market is now long gone. It was a favourite place of Jacks. I remember him telling. Mine once when he was there an elderly lady came up to him and said “Hello Jack, do you like my new curtains in my living room” She was convinced watching his programmes that he was sitting with her chatting in her room. This of course was Jacks get gift that he seemed to be there just chatting with you.

That's a wonderful array of wildlife to have around your garden dave.
Tawny owls are a favourite of mine, most people don't realise how lovely their colours are, and what a great bonus to keep the rodent population in check.
You even have a good variety of birds coming to your feeders.
I noticed you have squirrel proof feeders, i am having squirrel problems at the moment, not just one, but sometimes two or even three at a time, i wondered how effective they are?

Paul I have tried many feeders and the ones you see from Amazon really do work. The squirrels really can’t get into them. The other bonus id to fill them you twist off the top and then twist it back on once you have filled them. They make them for all types of food and the Jays and woodpeckers seem to be able to still feed from them. The feeder is called Gardman A01820 Heavy Duty Squirrel Proof Seed Bird Feeder, Multi-colour, 12.75 kg but there are other makes the same design. Happy New Year.

Ralph yes the cameras are very good both at night and in the day. I tried some other cameras with IR and although double the price they were not as good to my mind. Happy New Year

Jason it is worth a thought as I was a bit sceptical about the cameras and did not for one moment think that they would capture what they did. Happy New Year.
Interesting, but... we have a very secluded bit of river on one edge of our place, and I have heard otters on it, and seen their spoor and found their spraint - but never seen them! And despite putting trailcams there for two years now, I still haven't, though I have heard them and see signs again! So, your cam's will show a lot, but probably not everything.
I am sure you are right. One of the very annoying things is the length of time they take to trigger so in cases such as the owl and the rat I have no idea how long he was sitting there before he took off. Happy New Year.
A lovely little film, thanks. But even though I am a townie, and don't really like the countryside, I have always known that there is a plethora of animals, large and tiny, all around us - some of which are watching us ‼️ If you have a brook nearby you will see lots of birds and rodents, stoats, mink etc ...

Hi there what a fantastic video unfortunately I live in the edge of Leeds West Yorkshire with a couple of bizzy roads around. Lots of cats now so the birds don't visit us eny more. But at the end of one road I can look down the valley and see Ilkley and the more and the other way out towards Harrogate, so I'm not doing too bad

You must have had to go through hours of footage to get to this 9 minute video. Do the cameras have sime kind of movement detectors? Really well edited to just the right length.
Foxes are almost an urban animal these days I have seen them several times in my parents backgarden, sometimes though you hear them in the middle of the night!!

Thank you David. You are right there were thousands of shots and I had to check them all to find the ones I wanted to use. The whole edit took me around five weeks. As for the cameras yes they do detect movement but they are very slow to react so you never get the arrival of creatures which is a bit frustrating. They don’t cost very much though so for what they are the picture are pretty good. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Would have been tremendous to see a lynx, but unfortunately no chance of that. Would love to see them around me,where roe deer cause so much damage to trees,

Yes one of the deer is a muntjac. There are in fact I have found about three muntjacs and three or four roe deer living there. Happy New Year.

One would expect that those animals has no reason to visit the garden with a whole forest nearby.
I wonder what those foxes find in the grass, snails or such things? They look like grazing cows ;)
There's a lot of food that's far more accessible in cleared areas rather than forest or heathland. I'm surprised he said he was surprised to see the deer. There are thousands on the forest and they make a beeline for clear grassland, gardens and fields. The grass is sweeter, more nutritious, that very green grass growing under tree cover is sour. Plus all the bird feeders, birds drop a lot of food from them.
We in fact live in what years ago was with the forest boundary but now a short distance away. They changed the boundaries years ago. As regards to the animals I am very lucky as we have a small wooded area at the bottom of the garden and they all live in there and come through to the gardens for food. This is anything from dustbins to food from bird feeders. They all look very healthy and quite well fed. To go onto the main forest they would have to cross a main road so are probably safer where they are. Happy New Year.

Are you going to pass on the two freebies, to a younger, less well off film maker? It is always good to encourage the next generation of creatives.
I have just checked it and it seems OK on my iPad and computer. The CamPark camera seems to be sold under different badges and the only one I could find on Amazon is the CEYOMUR Solar Wildlife Camera 4K which is the same but cheaper.
