- We visit a traditional jigsaw maker in Dorset to watch them make a jigsaw from the opening of Old Country with Jack Hargreaves.
To Buy the Jigsaw:
We have a limited number of the Jigsaws available from Little Knoll Press by going to tinyurl.com/2wcbxj29
About:
40 years ago, Jack Hargreaves and Ghost, his pack pony, walked around Ashmore Dew Pond and were filmed by Steve Wagstaff for the introductory sequence of the TV series Old Country.
The lilting music of Jonathon Coudrille’s guitar playing Recuerdos de la Alhambra accompanied the scene and led the viewer into the timeless countryside that Jack Hargreaves brought to life in Old Country and, formerly, in the Southern TV series Out of Town.
Today, the quiet village of Ashmore and the Dew Pond have hardly changed, but around the corner a former cow shed hums with the activity of a homegrown business, JHG Jigsaws Ltd.
This is just the kind of enterprise that Jack Hargreaves would have included in his programmes where he often featured ever-evolving country life.

I just asked my wife to add this to my Christmas list. last year I received the full box sets of Jacks series, and have nearly shed a tear or two at the beauty and nostalgia that man stands for. What a great idea to keep his memory alive.
Thank you I am sure you will enjoy making the jigsaw.
I hope they do well with the jigsaw puzzle, anyone that makes a celebration to Jack Hargreaves is alright in my book.
Every time I hear that music, it puts me instantly at ease, all my worries vanish in an instant and I just feel this calm come over me.
Thank you Jonathan.
Just bought one , thanks Dave
We so enjoyed filming this with Dave and Jenny. What a lovely fim. Thankyou to all for the kind comments.
What isthe size of the jigsaw when it's put together please?
@@Barnaby_bo on the jigsaw box that I had arrive today 69cm x 48cm hope that helps
It's always nice to see a small business like that I'll definitely be buying one.
Thank you. We are trying to get all the jigsaws out to arrive by Christmas so if you want to sit with a drink and a mince pie on Boxing Day making it please order soon.
I have just bought the jigsaw & really look forward to getting it in the post, I remember dear Jack & his beautiful pony Ghost years & years ago & that beautiful soothing music, of times I miss so much.
Wonderful viewing. Thank you so much.
Thank you John I am so pleased you enjoyed the programme.
How delightful - must share this with my sister as she lives not from Sturminster Newton - lovely place to live. So lovely to know Jack's legacy lives on & these delightful people are maintaining an ancient tradition, which in these energy-strapped times is the perfect occupation for a cold winter's eve. Merry Christmas to Our Friends in the North.
Thank you and have a great Christmas.
What a lovely film, great to see a rural business doing so well and proud of the connection to my childhood hero, Jack.
Thank you Charlie.
I bought one of these for my Dad, we used to watch this in the days when i was young. He is thrilled with his puzzle, thankyou so much.
What lovely story, may you thrive and prosper. 👌
Thank you. It is really good to see a small firm like that being successful.
Very interesting, and lovely to see a small country based business making quality products.
It is indeed Paul.
Memories..1957 aged 5 I got my first jigsaw puzzle at our school Christmas party,it was budgies,so colourful.now I have a 9 year old that loves jigsaws dispite all the modern games...Great video and Merry Xmas to all.
Congratulations to Jenny on the very atmospheric painting of Jack as he strolls his horse around the village pond. Really captures the spirit of Jack and his programmes. Great!
Simply wonderful...how could anyone not appreciate every moment of that journey. I wonder if its possible to retrace the route and if the pubs are still, to have at least 1 pint in each! What happened to Jack after the last episode? He's a true gentleman and someone who made this towney realise he should be living in the countryside. Thanks Jack and thanks Dave for bringing these amazing stories back to life. Regards Mick
That's fantastic....i love making jigsaw puzzles.... I've not seen them being made before...🙏🇳🇿
Fascinating and great to see British manufacturing
Thank you Mary. Yes it is great that you can still set up a small successful business in UK.
JH - Perfectly preserved 😊
Amazing that was lovely thank you !!
Thank you I am so glad you enjoyed it.
Wow. Just lovely to see traditional small businesses. Ho that England could once again become a national of small businesses.
It sure is Andrew in these days that we no longer have much UK manufacturing. The big boost for them was covid with people being locked down they orders flooded in.;
I love this so much . Thank you.
Thank you Alan.
Lovely!
that;s going to be a tough jigsaw with all the green area of the grass and pond
I bought a lovely jigsaw from Ireland. It had 1000 pieces and 20 spares.
Did you make it Stephen?
I once went on a mystery bus trip there. We had a sweep to guess the destination & the driver won £50 !
@@ashleyhoward8926 My grandad was a bus driver. I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like he did. Not screaming in terror like his passengers!
Great video thank you 👍 love the jigsaw works.
Thank you so much.
Gonna get that jigsaw.
If you stood in the garden facing jack that was my grans old home before she married great video Dave .
I think I need to buy this as I visited the pond often as a child with my brother and parents
Please do buy a jigsaw I think you will have fun making it.
@@DaveKnowlesFilmmaker I did right after putting the comment here, I’m sure I will enjoy the Jigsaw.
I’m sure many of us would love seeing more of them
What a great present for an out of town fan. 👍
Yes I thought that Paul when the idea was originally floated by Julie at the jigsaw company.
These would make the ideal present for a Jack Hargreaves fan. We had a small number of Jacks jigsaw made for the video and the link to buy one of these is tinyurl.com/2wcbxj29
My compliments to Jenny - that was a fantastic painting
Thank you Hugh I have passed on your nice comment.
This is just fantastic. My late mum would have love to have one of these.
Whenever I popped in to see her, she always had a jigsaw on the go !
Great to see puzzles being made and right next door as well. I love the painting, can we obtain a print of that as well?
Good luck from Spain!!
Hi David we hadn't considered selling the print also but will look into it as they a done as you saw in the programme by Julie.
British cottage industry...my hats off to them!!
Yes it is great isn't it Micheal.

Lovely 👍
Thank you Terry.
Lovely jigsaw! If you'd only put this out a week earlier ....but then would the team of 5 coped with the Christmas rush?
Well done British country puzzles
I couldn`t help myeslf and ordered one of the puzzles before I had even finished watching the video. I have no willpower.
Thank you David.
".... 2008, when the whole world went into chaos ...." Did I miss something? What happened in the world in 2008?
Who did that painting ??
As annoying as a piece missing from a jigsaw was the absence of Jack standing discreetly watching proceedings with his unique take on things.
That would have been nice wouldn't it.
£20! That is insanely cheap!
balmoral.
Baal Immoral, 🤣
