This is one of the best speaker reviews I have ever heard. You used technical explanations that made sense to me 100%. I'm a professional audio engineer and I'm tracking with your review and the correct terminology. A lot of "audiophiles" use weird terminology that doesn't mean anything to me lol. You did a great job. Thank you so much.

A lot of people asking about room size. I talked to SVS and they said as long as you have them at least 12 inches off the back wall and 16 inches away from obstructions for the side woofers, you should be good. That said, I would probably only put them in a room larger than 10 × 10.

I purchased these towers from svs earlier this year. Tried them with different amps, Adcom 7000, Musical Fidelity and finally vertically bi-amped Forte Audio model 3's. ( 200 watts each)
Playing then at a fairly loud ( but not loud enough to be uncomfortable) i picked up quite a bit of bass distortion in the lower area where the 2 8" woofers are. I could actually feel the cabinets flexing and putting off audible vibrations.
I removed a woofer to find a decently constructed cabinet but lacking any bracing. I had some scrap cherry 2x2's from a custom speaker build so i cut and glued them above the woofers.
I only did one speaker and tested it against the the "stock" one. So much better!! No bass distortion or resonance to speak of now.

How do you like the tweeter performance in this speaker? I bought a pair of Polk R700s based on the glowing reviews but was extremely disappointed when I received them and started playing them due to the subpar tweeter performance.
Looking to replace them now and looking at these SVSs as an option.

    • @mrcarpentersc
      @mrcarpentersc Před rokem

@@LichaelMewis that's ironic. I was really leaning toward the polk R700. My deciding factor was the Ultra towers going a little lower in the bass department.
I have no real complaints as far the mids and tweeters.
Actually love the mids. The tweets are good although i can't help wonder if they would be even better without the metal gaurd cover.
As for the bass I ended up installing internal bracing just above the woofers.
I was driving each tower with a separate vertically bi-amped Forte audio model 3 200 watt amp and when i had the ports on the towers plugged with the foam i could hear distortion at very loud levels. You could even see the cabinets flexing. With the new bracing they sound much better.
As for your question, the tweets are almost on par with my B&W's, not quite as good as my Kef 104/2's but decently close.

Great review, I am running these towers along with the ultra center and 2 SB-3000 subs. Sound is details and authoritative. Had a pair of ML 60 XT, and the treble was so fatiguing I had to return them. Before I did, I ordered these with the 45 day trial period. It took 2 songs to know these were staying and the ML were being returned. The treble is accurate but not harsh, the mid range is warm, and there is tight and accurate bass, all with excellent imaging. I am not sure what other speakers accomplish this for the price.

Jason, what size is your room?? And Do you still have this setup?? I’m currently searching for an audio system for a dedicated home theater. The room is 25’ long by 13’ wide. I’m leaning towards going with these towers, the ultra center, and I am debating going with either 2 SB-2000’s or 2 SB-3000’s. With the size of my room, would you recommend this setup??

    • @jasonrunyon9845

@@tonyg03 It is an open concept kind of room, so also connects to the kitchen and breakfast area behind the seating position, and is open the full 2 stories in height, so a pretty large room. I highly recommend this setup, but you may want ported subs if your main focus is movies. I wanted tighter, cleaner bass for music, so I went sealed. I think you could get away with the 2000s if you went ported, otherwise I would go with the SB-3000. It was a huge improvement over the 2000s.

So much so, I had decided to sell the others, and my current home theater setup, and go full Ultra Home Theater. the quick and detailed bass is indeed a result of the big woofers. Because of their big surface area, they don't have to move nearly as far to move the same amount of air as a single 6,5" would have to. And they can make that smaller movement quicker so that's why the bass is quick. Also, larger woofers are more linear and overal better at reproducing quility bass than smaller drivers.

Great review Josh! As an owner of the Ultra Towers I would like to make two Ultra secret suggestions, just between us in the know. First, adjust the rake of the speakers so the tweeter fires more directly toward the height of your ear. Second, remove the bass grills. The grill for the 8" bass driver is simply press fit with a very thin soft material around the exposed metal edge. You will need to hook something through the small holes on opposite sides and wiggle them out. Once you get the hang of it it's quite easy. Looking forward to what you think after performing these suggestions.

When I put the grills back on I noticed a slight muffled sound to the bass and a slight thump that now sounded like distortion or interference. Just my opinion of course ymmv.

I got a pair of these a couple years ago, and just redid my crossovers with air core inductors, poly and related caps, replaced ferromagnetic components, and replaced the aluminum wiring SVS uses with good copper, etc.
I have other much more expensive high end monitors in my recording studio, and these SVS act as better mains than all but maybe 1% of the ultra-high end, at 10% of the price including the crossover and related upgrades. They were a great value at $2K for the pair, now they are world class at $3K with upgrades. I am using a mid-size SVS sub with them in a large studio (57’x29’x14’), and these destroy many of the most expensive pro studio mids/mains.

Excellent review, Josh! Thank you for this. I have a couple notes, and a request. First, I would recommend the opening scene of "The Greatest Showman" as another great all-around test. It's sonically very different in the film than the same song on the soundtrack. The combination of resounding, rumbling, booming bass and mid as Hugh Jackman is standing under bleachers while people stomp, and then hearing the brush of his hand on the brim of his hat is a pretty amazing display of power and detail, if your speakers can do it. Although you say a sub isn't necessary with the SVS Ultra towers, I would still say you'll need one for this.
Second, I would recommend replacing the brass brackets on the back of your towers with some good, thick speaker wire, if you're not bi-amping. It definitely made a difference on my towers, when I tried it. Bi-amping, though, is absolutely the way to go-- especially with as many drivers as the SVS Ultra towers have. The A-300 you pictured is a great, powerful amp. But asking it to drive a tweeter, two 6.5" mids, and two 8" woofers per channel is quite a lot.
For my request, I would love it if you could review and compare the Emotiva T2+ towers. I have them, currently, and really love them for many of the same reasons you love the SVS. I'm willing to concede that an extra $700 for 2 extra drivers per tower will likely lead to a bigger, more enveloping sound with proper amplification. However, I have a TA-100 driving the 5.5" mids and folded ribbon tweeters, and an A-300 driving the 8" woofers, and I'd take the pepsi challenge against any stereo tower system without fear of embarrassment.

Great review, to the point and concise, I love that you started of with the quick conclusion, and nicely shoot. Also I'm watching this on my SVS Ultra Towers with mate Oka Venere which I love. I also came to the same conclusion that I didn't need subwoofers after a lot of testing, to little of the music, games and movies I consume go sub 30 often enough in any meaning full way for me in my apartment. I also use a miniDSP with Dirac Live to boost my sub 35hz base to compensate for the roll-off. Lastly I would appreciate a list of the music used in the vide and songs you talked about in the review. Now I had to ask Siri to identify them.

I’m stunned when you mention they were only 2k. They do look a lot like some of the speakers from Meridian. It’s a shame they are for bigger rooms as I’m sure they would have been on my shortlist (funds allowing) would love to audition them with my friends Krell preamp & 4 monoblocs with his krell CD player as source. He’s using Martin Logan Neolith speakers at the moment. It would be interesting to compare The SVS ultra against the Neolith as I’m sure price performance wise the SVS would win
Also interesting point with needing your ears to be inline with the tweeter for best results , -B&W 8 series put their tweeters on the top so possibly alleviating the problem. Would it be better if SVS had rearranged the speaker setup so that the tweeter was on top? As I’m not an audio engineer this may be a stupid question.

I'm sure they're good, but after demoing a bunch of SVS subs I won't be going SVS. Subs are supposed to be their specialty but they just didn't have the fidelity for music like JL and REL. So if they can't knock a product out of the park that they specialize in, then I won't bother with any of their other products. Reviewers give their subs praise, but I found them under performing with music. That's just my 2 cents. Great review though and the B-roll was beautiful. Keep up the good work.

@@DRC92 🤣🤣🤣 or maybe you have no idea. Maybe you haven't heard a sub that is at that next level or two up from SVS. Maybe you guys don't have an ear for bass. Go out and listen to something decent like a REL or JL back to back to the SVS on some music and you will see. It really isn't that great for music. But to maybe to your ears, it's great but to mine I could hear a hug difference. I wasn't ok with settling with something that's just "ok" with music.

@@danemoreno88 I started out with a very typical 5.1 system all SVS Ultra with 2x of the Ultra 16 sealed subs using Emotiva single amplifier. The next stage I went to was adding 8x of the 1000 series Focal in Ceiling speakers and realized the Focal was clearer and more refined with better midrange defenition and these are really just 6x over heads and 2x rears. I still used the SVS rears as sides now. I then added 4x more SVS Ultras's to create a line array setup and found i needed a much better processor to control them. Purchased the AVM 90 from Anthem to go with 2x ATI 300x8 amplifiers. Long story short is now that I have gone down this rabbit hole the SVS Ultra towers still punch above their weight in this system but it does make me want to switch them out for Focal speakers.
