      I had mine for almost 2 years, and recently just redid the crossovers with high grade components (air core inductors, sonic caps and foils, etc), and now what were great $2K speakers are $3K speakers that perform far beyond many of the high end monitors in my studio, and better in many ways than $25-75K studio mains in top mastering studios I have been in. Room positioning and proper setup is critical, as is subwoofer placement and config.

    @pstone7657 Před 3 lety +3

    I just subscribed and gave you a like because NOW I want to hear more of your "honest" reviews. You are one of the few tech reviewers that admit right up front that you paid for the speakers with your own money and were not comped with free equipment from the manufactuer. Nothing wrong with reviewers making a commission off their links. Understandably, we all realize not many could afford to "buy" every item they review . . . But take a lesson here from "Spec of Tech" and let the viewers know by a disclaimer RIGHT AT THE START OF YOUR VIDEO that you are being comped and you were sent free equipment to review and either keep or have to send it back. Then a viewer can make a more informed opinion on how biased your reviews are! I think CZcams should make this a "mandatory" disclaimer anyway.

    Derek I wish you could try some Tekton Double Impact speakers at least for the main fornt left and right and give us your thoughts. I built my own bessel array and they are amazing. Part of this is due to their high efficiency and part is due to the radiation dispersion of the 7 tweeters in the center at ear level. I have looked at all the arguments about the comb filtering effect but to my ears I like the dynamics! I made removeable panels so I can pop one design in over another for the tweeters and midrange for testing purposes. I do like the look of the svs and they are very clean sounding which is no surprise since they use mainly peerless drivers.

      Thanks for watching brother, great choice on the Ultras. The "best" amplifier really is a tough question to answer, because everyone has different preferences. I would say a good place to start on the budget side of things are the Tonewinners amps I have reviewed on my channel. There is always Emotiva as well, but the Tonewinners have a similar sound and technology for less money. If you want to start looking at amplifiers at a higher price point the Anthem amps are great for their price as well. Look for something that has around 200 WPC, that should be plenty to drive these.

    • @chrissylvain6834
      @chrissylvain6834 Před rokem +1

      Horizontal centers are inferior by design. They are simply a design made to compromise with the demands for fitting a speaker on a TV stand. Vertical speakers will offer a cleaner sound and less off axis wonkiness. It all comes down to the fact Horizontal speakers will always have a woofer out of phase as your ears would be different distances to each woofer even when infont of it..this of course goes from not a problem to wonky farther off center you sit. It's not the end of the world but having Vertical is key to getting a great response in all seats.

      I was running them without subwoofers in the demos. I haven't really experienced many in ceiling speakers, but I have heard good things about the Paradigm in ceilings. • @tonezou3918
    @tonezou3918 Před rokem

    How would you compare the SVS Ultra Towers to the Paradigm Founder 120H considering price and all your thoughts? Not a fair comparison, but still, if I had the money, would I need the 120H for much, much more money if I just need a very detailed and much warmer than Klipsch's bright-in-the-face sound, with great soundstage as well? Bass might not be a factor here, since I can hook up a sub separately anyway and still spend much less than the 120H, right?
    A side question: does the jazz song (the first one in the demo) sound much-less fatiguing than Klipsch? I specifically don't like the 1-3K Hz range where that song plays if it is overexaggerated on speakers, especially when it is "in your face" sharp.

    • @SpecOfTech
      @SpecOfTech  Před rokem +1

      That would be tough for me to answer for you. The Founder 120H are a much better speaker, detailed yet tame highs, a slightly warm presentation with phenomenal bass. The SVS Ultras are a great speaker at their price, but they can't really compare to something that costs as much as the 120H. The 120H is a vastly better speaker, but it also has a much higher price tag. Even with the bass aside the 120H is better, but again, the Ultras perform great for their price range.
      The Ultra towers and the 120H are not an in your face speaker like Klipsch is. Although, Klipsch has now flattened their response with the second version of the RP line. They are still a horn tweeter though, so in your face, but soundstage and imaging are great with that type of speaker.

      Well in most cases a tower will have better performance that its little brother bookshelf from the same product line. That being said, for the most part you won't make good on that performance bump because a rear speaker is used very little in soundtracks. Long story short, IMO, using a tower is more a personal preference than it is for performance.

      Hey man, thanks for watching! I don't know if you would see enough benefits switching from the Def Techs to the Ultras. I have not personally heard the 9060's, but I have heard Def Techs before and they are great speaker. They also have respectable bass with their built in powered subwoofers. They only way I could see it being worth switching, is if you listened to the Ultras and just really love the sound signature over the Def Techs, other than that they are both a very capable speaker.
      Another speaker you could look at which in a similar price bracket is the Klipsch RF7 III's. If you are incorporating subwoofers, then you could also look at the PSA (Power Sound Audio) HT speakers, they don't have much for low end performance, but do an excellent job as a HT speaker. If you have a bigger budget, I have heard amazing things about JTR speakers, but I have not heard their speakers personally. If you have a big budget, look at Legacy Audio speakers. They have been having some issues with QC, and their turnaround times are long, but the sound of those speakers is truly amazing. I hope that helps my friend...cheers.

      @@SpecOfTechLegacy, nice!
      I did both rp8000 xo boards at the same time, then installed one cabinet at a time. For a time of about 24 hours I had one fully completed before taking the other one apart. So I was able to play mono tracks then just switch L&R for A/B listening tests! It is not a small difference, and you don't need a measurement or listening test to justify it, though they will. What im saying is, there is a huge and audible difference. The tweeters are way too hot on the klipsch and the woofers and tweeters roll off before they meet leaving you with an 8-10db dip in the vocal region.
      I love the way they sound now and I think the norez just takes it over the top. I then did both my subs in norez.
      I hear you with the endgame upgrade. My idea of that is to build either some of the x statiks or x otticas from GR. I also have a connection for Atlantic technology thx, ultra, and ultra 2 speakers, so I could get 40% off on those through someone I know at THX. I love the way their center is designed. Unlike klipsch. They actually have a tweeter between 2 mid woofers and then either 2 or 4 woofers to the side depending on the model. All center speakers should be designed like that. The floorstanders are like that as well.
      I prefer a full 3 way design, but I would rather have the largest woofers at either 6.5 or 8". Because I have multiple subs, that would just be perfect for me. I love having those lower octaves backing up the vocal band with force. The GR upgrade made this possible with my 504c, but you have to be right in front of it. I can't wait to go back to a well designed neutral speaker with paper cone woofers.
      Sorry, I ramble. I'll get into my upgrades in a bit. I just finished making 2 amps that power 11 speakers, so I can get a processor when the time comes. I'm in preamp mode on a denon for now, which allows enough voltage for the amps to reach their peaks. Now, im cutting the frames for these 6&8" acoustic panels.

This is supposed to be a review of SVS speakers and as far as I know all the speakers in the world that have a gloss black finish have the same “problem” so it’s not really a problem is it. It’s kind of like saying I don’t like General Electric fans because when I stick my fingers in the cage the fan blades keep cutting my fingers off. Same with the sound being off because the speaker was moved. Really? The General Electric fan does blow cool air on me because I moved it away from my location. Great demo, Thanks I own a pair of svs pb3k's and Ed @svs was amazing helping me dial these in with REW. Flat within 3db from 17htz to the crossover @80. My revel Salon 2's have that piano black, and I don't find them hard to keep clean. Just keep a soft cloth and Meguiars quik shine near by. I also own a pair of the Klipsch rp8000f's. I wouldn't attempt to play jazz on them. They are good for movies and heavy metal. And thanks I'm always looking for new content. So I fired up the Anthems and Revel's and it's "A dark Jazz club in Autumn" and it's Lou &J2X Gentlemen, I had to google to find them. Both on Prime Ultra HD. Good stuff

    They are great speakers. To me, though, if I were upgrading into the $1400 USD ($1800 CAD) range for a pair of speakers, I would go for Totem Acoustic or Tannoy models in that price range.
    The Klipsch RP series are more lively, exciting and detailed and can be had for cheap. SVS are awesome, but they don’t sound different than JBL, Wharfdale, or B&W etc. Depends if you like a more forward treble, which I do. Just my thoughts.

      @@SpecOfTech I really appreciate your input, would the Klipsch system (8000f, 504c, elevation and surrounds, be better than svs( pinnacle, ultra center, ultra surround, prime elevation)?

    • @SpecOfTech
      @SpecOfTech  Před 3 lety

      @@RjTheTrigun No problem my friend. It is tough for me to say definitively. I have not experienced the Ultra Center or the elevations. I will say that the Ultra Surrounds were very good and I enjoyed them. I believe overall, the SVS will give you a slightly warmer balanced sound, but the Klipsch will give you slightly more pronounced highs which can add some clarity in movies/music. I would really encourage you to go with the Ultra towers over the Pinnacles if you do go that route, and you have the space to make them work. I hope this helps.

      @@RjTheTrigun Ok gotcha, well IMO the Ultras provide much richer mids and a more tame high end versus the Pinnacles. The Pinnacles are still a great speaker, and I don't imagine you would be disappointed when paired with a subwoofer.

    SVS needs to bring out a new flagship line and replace these. I don’t like the look and many reviews out there claimed bright and brittle. I own the PB 13Ultra sub and it’s a big winner.

    • @SpecOfTech
      @SpecOfTech  Před rokem

      I would like to see a new flagship from SVS as well, although I do happen to like the look of the Ultra tower. I am not sure why reviewers would be saying these are bright? When measured they do have a pretty neutral flat response. Unless those reviewers are used to a warm tame speaker like a lot of the British companies put out. Then listening to a flat speaker would seem brighter.

    The Ultra Towers are definitely worth owning. The sound stage is wide and loud. These speakers can really fill a medium or large room with loud, crisp, detailed, and base heavy sound effortlessly. My Pioneer elite towers are more articulate in the sound dispersion but the Ultra Towers is in another stratosphere in everything else.
    The Ultra Towers kill in both movies and 2 channel listening. Oh did I forget to mention, the Ultra Towers play very loud. They have a hard time trying to be quiet. Some people might not like that but it doesn't bother me one bit. As far as the gloss black having reflective surface, I don't notice any, but I have a a large panel TV in my theater room. So, maybe if you have a projector it's possible you might get light reflection off the piano black surface.
    In closing, the Ultra Towers will change the environment of any home theater for the good. There's no other speakers on the market at this price range that can compete or beat the value of the Ultra Towers. You will have to spend twice the money to find speakers that can compete and even then the low end base of the Ultra Towers will still be better.
