Dude I remember when we had to do this to our cat because his fur had matted up so badly (for the record, he spent about 80% of his time outdoors and we could never get a hold of him long enough to give him a good brush). It was awesome. Like having a little white lion slinking about the house lol

I dont think people in this comment section understand or own a long haired cat. Also I dont think majority of them have been in a vet program and are actually studying to be a vet. Shaving a long haired cat can prevent a lot of comfort troubles, hair balls, and pain for the cat. Also it prevents a cat from dying of heat in extremely hot climates like Florida. So to help the cat out people shave their cat. And besides its obvious the person went to a vet and had the professionals shave the cat. As someone who's done clinical rotatations in a vet office and lives in florida, its not uncommon to see shaved cats because of the sweltering heat. The owner didn't shave the cat for shits and giggles but because they live in a hot climate more than likely. And if you've ever owned a long haired cat or handled them, you'd understand. And their fur grows back in time for winter. Also matted fur and hairballs can be very painful for cats. And a vet recommended that cut for the cat. So everyone calling it animal cruelty and saying its not right, or cats have lived for millions of years with fur like that. You should think about the type of cats that lived in hot areas and cold areas. Short haired cats lived in hot areas and long haired cats lived in cold areas. If I had to guess I'd say Luna does not recognize Jasper, but that's odd because I though most animals use smell more than vision to identify. But then when Luna is shaved Jasper has the same reaction. I'd be very curious to hear what a specialist would say about their reactions. As far as cats and fur, some cats are like those trick water pitchers, no matter how much fur you remove by combing them, there never seems to be any less.
My wife and I have gone back and forth on that question. She was of the opinion that the smell was the primary motivator for the behavior, but I felt like it was a visual reaction. Luna is also a great fan of watching crows out the front window, and she recognizes other cats walking outside. And great metaphor about the trick water pitcher!
Most animals when sense change in another member of the group move to remove them from the group under the disguise that illness has set in and avoid they themselves from contracting it. Maybe this is what we are seeing in action?
It's very interesting in that aspect i agree, it's also fucking hilarious that in another view it would seem that luna didn't want to be nere her brother but once she looked stupid as well it seemed like she was like oh well mase well look stupid together. another thing is maybe she thought he was badly injured or something and kept him away as a survival kind of reaction until she got the fur trim and realised it was normal. either way cats are obviously not dumb
My longhaired cat, Phinneus, tended to be miserable in the summer. Eventually we gave him a lion cut like Jasper and Luna every spring, and he was very comfortable and pleased with it. My other cats had no trouble recognizing him, though.

Chris, vets even recommend you to shave long haired cats because their skin is oily as fuck which causes their fur to get netted, it's painful for those cute little fuckers. Combing them actually stresses them out.

We shaved our two cats for the first time last summer and they did the same thing! It was very strange because they were usually very friendly, but now they would hiss at each other. We asked the vet what could be going on with them and she predicted it was because they weren't able to recognize each other because of the haircut, and their smell was different from what they used to wash them. This year we solved this by having them both get shaved at the same time in the same room :p

There are certain dog breeds which you can shave, but most you can't, because the UV radiation from the sun will burn their skin, and also the coat acts as a protection from the cold during winter, and in reverse it cools in summer. Same goes for cats. If you shave your pets, then you risk serious health issues and even death. So yes, it is abuse. You people will never learn. Keep your stupid advices to yourself.

pretty funny, and as a fellow long hair owner I understand why you shave them. our cat's hair isn't that long, but it'thick and likes to cause a lot of problems. last year when he had fleas it was almost impossible to treat him because of his hair, and when our cruddy AC can't keep up in the summer, first thing we do is shave our fuzzball, we won't let him face a heat wave with a full fur coat. as long as it's an indoor cat, and you don't cut the skin or whiskers there's no harm, in my experience they kinda dig the trims

I can't believe some people believe shaving cats is cruel! It's just their fur, I mean they are gonna be cleaner with shorter hair and overtime it would grow back. And if your cat needs some sort of flea or tick treatment by the vet and they have a random patch of fur missing because of the treatment, you can probably just ask them to look like a lion, hence the lion mane and boots. On one hand, norwegians and siberians get really warm in the summer; on the other, their hair is getting tangled easily. I did a haircut on my tomcat this summer, but at 50% hair length, so it still looked fine.

My longhaired cat, Phinneus, tended to be miserable in the summer. Eventually we gave him a lion cut like Jasper and Luna every spring, and he was very comfortable and pleased with it. My other cats had no trouble recognizing him, though.

Chris, vets even recommend you to shave long haired cats because their skin is oily as fuck which causes their fur to get netted, it's painful for those cute little fuckers. Combing them actually stresses them out.

We shaved our two cats for the first time last summer and they did the same thing! It was very strange because they were usually very friendly, but now they would hiss at each other. We asked the vet what could be going on with them and she predicted it was because they weren't able to recognize each other because of the haircut, and their smell was different from what they used to wash them. This year we solved this by having them both get shaved at the same time in the same room :p

There are certain dog breeds which you can shave, but most you can't, because the UV radiation from the sun will burn their skin, and also the coat acts as a protection from the cold during winter, and in reverse it cools in summer. Same goes for cats. If you shave your pets, then you risk serious health issues and even death. So yes, it is abuse. You people will never learn. Keep your stupid advices to yourself.

pretty funny, and as a fellow long hair owner I understand why you shave them. our cat's hair isn't that long, but it'thick and likes to cause a lot of problems. last year when he had fleas it was almost impossible to treat him because of his hair, and when our cruddy AC can't keep up in the summer, first thing we do is shave our fuzzball, we won't let him face a heat wave with a full fur coat. as long as it's an indoor cat, and you don't cut the skin or whiskers there's no harm, in my experience they kinda dig the trims

I can't believe some people believe shaving cats is cruel! It's just their fur, I mean they are gonna be cleaner with shorter hair and overtime it would grow back. The cats looks adorable with their lion mane, boots and fluff tail. And if your cat needs some sort of flea or tick treatment by the vet and they have a random patch of fur missing because of the treatment, you can probably just ask them to look like a lion, hence the lion mane and boots. +Jex134 You aren't supposed to shave the tip of a cats tail or its head, they need their tale size to remain constant as it's how they calibrate the area they have when fitting through cracks and maintain balance. This is how a vet would shave a cat.
