    The powered rear window is one of things I love about the 4runner. If they drop that feature it will majorly upset the 4runner faithful out there.

      I would be in that crowd of 4runner faithful. "Just say NO" to flip up glass! KEEP THE POWERED WINDOW AND FLAT OPEN CARGO SPACE! Might as well add that smaller engines + turbos means more/quicker wear and tear and heat (guess only time will tell?)

      Just like Toyota did with the new Land Cruiser - they eliminated the clamshell / tail gate rear hatch. That was one of my favorite features on my 99 Land Cruiser.

    One of the main reason I bought my 4Runner was to have that famous Toyota V6 engine. Its supposedly bullet proof. I know the EPA is forcing these smaller engines on us, but F them...I want my V6. I don't trust all this turbo-ing of small engines to power these big vehicles.

      A 4 banger in a mid-sized suv is ridiculous. The epa is on some bullshit. What makes this hurt so much is i actually work for Toyota, i build the Corolla here in Mississippi. I want a Taco/4Runner but without the V6 its just insulting.

    Might have to swing the finances and get a 2024. The old 4.0 V6 is tried and true, very low maintenance and good for 500K of hard use. Then in another 15-20 years allow myself to be forced into the fancy turbos/hybrids, but for now I want simple and less things to go wrong when I am off the paved roads.

    The writing on the wall was obvious that the naturally aspirated V6 and V8 options would be gone. Personally I'm happy about a 4-banger turbo hybrid. The turbo and EV power combine to produce LOTS of low-end torque, which for off-road and launching is great! Wonder if a Limited edition will have full time FWD? Electric sliding rear window is truly one of the best things I love about my Gen 3! Hope it doesn't go away.

    I had an 07 FJ cruiser, 15 4 Runner and a 22TRD sport 4 runner which I traded in on my 22 ford bronco. My biggest complaint on the Toyotas was the rust on the under carriage! I actually had to replace the calipers on my 07 FJ because of the rust, first time ever on any vehicle I’ve owned! I had my 15 4 runner undercoated, but still didn’t help. Very questionable where they buy their steel from. We also had a 2014 Tacoma in the family that needed the frame replaced with only 50k on it.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I’m just basing it off OEM wheels but from what I’ve seen, they aren’t shipping with 17s. I believe there are 3 brake package levels, with the TRD trims having the largest. Toyota reaaaaally needs to release some concrete details on these trucks. Launch of the 24s sure is close!

    I’ll keep my 2016 trail edition with the 2nd shifter for the 4x4 function with locking rear diff and crawl mode. The 4 liter V6 is bullet proof engine because of its simplicity. A Lexus/toyota mechanic said that he worked worked at the dealership for 25 years and he had never had to open this engine because nothing ever goes wrong because it’s so simple. Just like the old V8 Land Cruisers they are built to last. I heard that the current 4Runners are made at a Lexus plant alongside the GX. I also trust NA vehicles more the boosted ones especially with suv/off road vehicles. Recently met a guy that traded his older Tundra for a new one and he said that it was a big mistake.

    • @IndependenceOverland
      @IndependenceOverland  Před 6 měsíci

      Timing chains are very common repairs on the 1gr-fe in the 4Runners. The Fj has the same engine. They are also known to develop oil leaks. They are reliable though. The 4Runner is in fact built in the Tahara factory next to the GX and Land Cruiser 200. It’s regarded as Toyotas best facility.
      That being said, the new 4Runner will be built there as well most likely. So it will still be a quality vehicle, and people seem to forget that even though the US/Mexico trucks aren’t built in Japan, the engines are. I think these new ones will be just fine myself.

    I still have my 1997 Toyota 4Runner Limited I bought new. I might be time to get a new one. I have loved my car for many years and it was super reliable. If you are going to buy a 4Runner I would think you would want a 4 wheel drive. If you want an SUV then others can get one with a smoother ride. The 4Runner will always have that truck kind of feel. That is why it is good going off road. I would love to see a hybrid 4Runner.

    I think Toyota may consider replacing both the Tacoma-based 4Runner and the Hilux-based Fortuner that's sold mostly overseas with one singular model that will be sold globally including the US since both the new Tacoma and next-gen Hilux pickups will be on the TNGA-F platform instead of separate platforms like their respective predecessors. However, this singular replacement for both the 4Runner and Fortuner could become a new Land Cruiser model that would sit below the Cruiser 250/Lexus GX550. A Lexus version of that may be possible, but we don't know for sure as of now.

    Around early 2025 I am likely to buy a Tacoma or Ranger. Leaning towards the Tacoma with manual trans -- obviously have not yet driven a new Tacoma. If the 4Runner offers the manual I could go that way -- not 100% sure about SUV or pickup, but I want a body-on-frame mid sized off-road capable vehicle. I would prefer non-turbo but that's how it goes now. I would not buy a hybrid because whatever I buy I plan to keep for many years.

      Time will tell on hybrid reliability, but based off the 1997 Prius models that are still kicking, we dont have much to worry about. And the batteries are built so parts of the battery can fail, and parts can be replaced. At least thats what a Toyota rep told me.

      Toyota does not use lithium in their batteries which I think keeps their cost down but also increases dependability. I don’t like the 3” of lost vertical space in the LC load area due to the hybrid battery and guessing the same will be the case with the 6gen 4R.

    • @brandonedwards4398
      @brandonedwards4398 Před 6 měsíci

      @@van_mod1 When I watched the interview w/ Chief Engineer, Mike Sweers, he said the deciding factor between nickel metal hydride vs lithium is usually packaging (Thus why the new Prius has a lithium ion battery- it’s a small car ). There are other benefits/ cons for each, but I believe that is the main deciding factor (based on that I think they should reconsider a lithium battery for Sequoia, or move the battery underneath, it’s too obtrusive). I think the elephant in the room is these lithium ion batteries are having problems catching fire. A parking garage in UK (Luton) partially collapsed because of a fire started by hybrid Land Rover w/ a lithium Ion Battery (it burnt through the floor). I haven’t heard of Toyota having a problem, but they’ve been using nickel metal hydride much longer. Not sure what the fix is for lithium ion, but it is a problem (vehicles that spontaneously combust tends to be a bad thing lol).

They’re going to target Bronco / Wrangler with it, and people who want something similar to their 5th gen 4Runner can have a LC J250. ALSO the new smaller Land Cruiser FJ is going to compete directly with Bronco Sport and Cherokee / Compass / Renegade, as Toyota’s affordable and efficient off roader. That’ll allow RAV4 to compete against CR-V and Mazda CX-5. And other crossovers
