Demo bike events are great, unfortunately they are few and far between these days and its very difficult to actually test ride a bike properly before buying it.

Great video! Looks like you had a lot of fun there. I am so used to disc brakes now, can't imagine going back to rim brakes. But there's nothing wrong with rim brakes at all. Think the manufacturers eventually will leave you with little choice there, you already talked about that in another video. Anyway, have a good time in your unbelievably light Ultimate and keep up the great work with your channel here!

Great video of what looks like a great day with Moloko and Canyon! I've owned a Canyon Ultimate and Aeroad, and can confirm that they complement each other very well. My impression of the two bikes aligns with yours: the Ultimate was lighter, more responsive, a better climber, and more twitchy, while the Aeroad was faster overall on flat or rolling terrain. I've now taken a different approach, by going for one of the new breed of lightweight aero bikes (a Specialized Tarmac).
Yes, the one bike for all purposes has also got a strong appeal

Great video Federico, and awesome you got to gain real world experience of the 3 main differences to your current ultimate: aero (ok so you have the VB), di2 and discs. I enjoyed watching your experiences and first thoughts! It's good to try everything so you can make informed choices when you want to change next and whether the investment in them is worth it to you. I have never tried high-end rim brakes, only pound shop specials, up to around Tiagra level, and never got on with them. Probably with me coming from an MTB background, could have been different story with ultegra and decent pads perhaps. I went with a bike using an Ultegra Di2 disc groupset (2020 model) as I just fancied it and had decent sale on that model. I really love it, especially where it's mainly small but rolling hills in every direction in my area and gets a lot of use. Saying that, has been a few moments when I thought I bricked the system though...
For me it's so hard to leave the Ultimate rim, feels part of my body when I ride. And that's margin to go lighter easily. This is also addictive.

After lots of thought a discussions here in Hamburg and around, aero it is for me. No mountains to think about the extra weight of those bikes , plus I am slightly below 90kg and I know I cannot/should go below 84. So even on a climb, 1 kg difference on the bike weight is not such of a factor. I love those late Orbea Aero and Cube C68x litening Aero, both of which are slightly less expensive than the Canyon.
As of disk brakes, I love them in the dry BUT in wet I must always be extra careful cause they block and you just fall.

I wanna buy that model before, but so expensive then ended up with cf xl 7, but it still great.
I was trying to decide between the ultimate and the aeroad for so long. Instant speed probably feels great but holding speed easily is also nice.
That is why you need both! Oh and a third for the commute.

Disc Brakes are brilliant. They take a little maintenance, but it’s easy. Only hard work if you’re the sort of rider who finds changing an inner tube to be challenging

No they’re not “brilliant”. We’re talking about a 7 kg road bike. Not a 200 kg motorcycle
@@stfu6397It’s just a brake system, get a grip mate. They’re not the same power as motorcycle brakes and you know it. Great news though you’re still allowed to use your rim brakes.
@stfu6397 Disc brakes are more aero, they stop better in dry and wet weather, and they don't rub against the freaking wheel in order to stop the bike. The only people still wanting rim brakes are dinosaurs who can't handle change.
Main difference is when riding in wet conditions the rim and pad get dirty, so you lose braking power and your rims wear out. It can be annoying having to clean the pads after every wet ride, but they are really easy to set up. Disc brakes always have big stopping power so you definitely have get used to that. They may be noisy and rub and they make the bike slightly heavier. Both systems have pro and cons. My city bike has rollerbrakes, very low maintenance, they are fine really until you have to take the wheel out. Still waiting for the perfect braking system. @@j4s0n67

I would love to have more time with the Aeroad. For now I can compare my aero Velobuild, 8Kg or so against my Ultimate, below 7Kg. You definitely feel the extra Kilo and the responsive ride on the Ultimate is better on hills, moderate to steep. Of course aero feels faster in the flat and favourable wind conditions.

If you're only a Spring/Summer outdoor rider and Autumn/Winter indoors routinely. Then there is definitely no need for disc brakes. Hell I don't think even the common Joe/Jane needs them, they're not descending wickedly 60-80kmh every ride. 😂
Granted some advantages on stopping power, but even my Dura Ace 9200 Rim Brakes is powerful enough. It used to be powerful enough for the pros, so it's good enough for me.
Fixed gear bikes used to be good enough for the pros at one point, that’s why I ride a fixed gear.
No need for anything else for the normal rider.
If you live on flat area you are right, I considered fixed gear but there is too much wind here. @@bikepackingadventure7913
For now I am managing with aluminium wheels for the wet commute and in the dry I am okay with carbon wheels. Definitely I never drag the brakes on the descends.
@@fede1275now i ride only carbon rims in every condition because it is much more efficient that campagnolo zonda ( Chinese carbon wheels, AC3 style, and campagnolo brake calipers with red campagnolo pads, the best combo i ever experienced )
Salutoni da un italiano (in Olanda). Ho una domanda, possibilmente hai tu una risposta;) ho appena comprato una aeroad( questa è perfetta per le altitudine che incontro in Olanda:) ). Ci sto pensando di risparmiare per una ultimate on the side( questa solo per quando mi voglio fare una pedalata sulle colline/montagne estere).
Se guardo la geometria.. non sembrano veramente differenti. Tu come le senti? Sono veramente differenti? La ultimate e più o meno 1.5 kg più leggera della aeroad ma se ci metto ruote basse credo che un chiletto mi ci riesce a perdere
Ciao! La nuova Aeroad e' stata disegnata con la geometria piu' vicina alla Ultimate, prima era piu' lunga e bassa. Quando l'ho provata mi e' sembrata molto simile alla mia Ultimate. L'unica cosa e' che io ho lo stem da 12cm e la Aeroad con il nuovo handlebar mi e' sembrata piu' corta. Sicuramente la Aeroad e' piu veloce sul piano, ma anche piu' pesante e meno reattiva. Dipende da come ti piace la bici e l'uso che ne fai. Sicuramente una gran bella bici comunque
@@fede1275 si quindi nn è solo “on paper” simile alla ultimate qua geometria, grazie. A dirti la verità credevo che la aeroad era veramente aggressiva, ma si siede bene e tranquilla. ( avevo una colmaro in alluminio prima di questa con i deep dish da 50… mamma mia ma la colmaro se non stavi attento ti punisce)
Do you think your next bike might be hydraulic disc? Did you notice a big difference from cable disc on your old bike, I think you had cable disc before maybe? The first year on road disc I was kinda on the fence now I don’t think I’d ever go back to rim, the only thing I like better for rim is the easy maintenance the weight difference doesn’t bother me anymore my fitness is what determines my ability’s more then anything else 🤙🏼
Yes, my Merida Scultura had mechanical discs and didn't work so well. With the discs you need lot more power and hydraulics are needed. My rim bikes brake better than mechanical discs. For now I see moving to hydro discs too of a big jump for me. I would gain benefits in areas I don't need, as riding fast in the wet or having a softer brake lever.

@@fede1275Don’t do it. Personally road tested a bunch of Disc bikes, all slugs below $8000 range- yes I know fast riders can make the bikes faster.. I want everyone to look back at their Strava PR’s and see if those disc brakes made them faster?? Honestly..
Why you would want powerful brakes to stop a 28mm tire and skid out? Has everyone not noticed more crashes on disc? Road riding, not commuting, gravel, mtb..
It’s all about riding skill, Bought a new 2023 Winspace T1500 Rim Brake- Love it❤ I could have bought disc option.. and Di2 but didn’t because I know how to ride my bike😂
You’re right to follow you’re gut, not to mention we all don’t have money trees in our backyards.. If I did, I would build the sickest rim brake build with mechanical shifting. Love your channel, don’t give in🤜👊
@@NP-kc5qdyes, actually I always think about the tyre contact when I brake and I'm on 25c and 23c tyres on my bikes. I would never dream of late braking like you do on a car or motorbike, it's not the same on a bicycle.

You're doing great with your channel! It's really not easy to choose, rim I'll go Ultimate, if between both with discs I'll choose Aeroad.
Go for the Di2 night and day difference. The ONLY possible downside is forgetting to charge it haha

Thats aeroad is the real only carbon frame that i would really really really want. What a beauty.
Regarding Di2. I love a smooth electronic shifting setup but if you get the chance give a well tuned Dura Ace 9100 mechanical a try. The response is amazing, lever throw is super short. I even prefer it over my dura ace di2 setup.

This was a basic model. They removed it a few months ago (at least in Germany). I know that because I’ve ordered that exact bike I; mid 2022 and silting last month.
This white/black is the old model, at the end of the video I showed the current model. Also they changed the seatpost clamp

I was hoping you'll be comparing this bike to your McLaren aero bike. Specifically in terms of riding comfort and compliance.
Yes, that would have been also interesting, unfortunately did not have the time. The Velobuild still feels a little more responsive, but not as stiff. Comfort is the same as the VB is on 23c tyres and the Canyon on 28c.
Don't know if you want to upgrade or not but I did the di2 upgrade for a few hundred pounds as Evans had a massive sale

@@fede1275 Yeah, the ultegra r8050 rim brake shifters were around 90 for the pair and mechs was similar price then I got the cables and battery from eBay and the junction box was from pro bike kit I think. All in I believe it was around 500 and then I sold all my parts I didn’t need any more on eBay and got most of that back. As long as you’re happy having brakes and cranks that might not match its a no Brainer

I don't feel lack of power with rims, apart from wet riding with carbon wheels. In the dry I am more conscious of the tyre contact than wanting more power from the brakes. But if you are now used to hydro discs it is difficult to adjust to rim,

into tube-shapes but now bottle setup should follow.
So no bottle cages but a shaped bottle that adheres somehow direct
to the downtube. Some sort of slider. no magnets. Lighter too !

The headset on these things is the worst design ever ,utterly terrible single point failure and it comes loose way too easily and if you don't keep an eye on it you're frame is done in a few months .
I'm not a fan of the new road quill type Canyon adjustable steerer, but I haven't seen failures or issues so far. I prefer a traditional stem clamp setup.
If you need disc brakes on a road bike, you are probably fat and rides an aero bike with full headset spacer in upright position 🤣🤣🤣 FACT
