Unfortunately I have to report that under my enormous power I unclipped a pedal and found out that the cleat itself was broken. It seems that all of a sudden wide tyres like 30c or 32c are the preferred width for road bikes: not only for comfort and convenience, they now are also supposed to be faster. Heavy rider at 100kg riding 28mm tyres 77 psi front 81 psi rear Most importantly 22.5mm internal width rims I used to ignore the type pressure calculators like sram and overinflate the tyres due to my weight But with a wider internal rim I have found 28mm or 30mm tyres are definitely faster and more comfortable due to the fact they expand to a size bigger and allow much lower pressures on rough uk roads Which makes the ride much more comfortable and gives more confidence in cornering etc
I would go for an aero bike for sure! In a TTT the best way to change positions is smooth - only go a bit slower after pulling at the front - and then only a slight acceleration when getting behind; so you spare the most energy. And also while drafting in 2.,3. or 4. position you have to put out less power and can better recover! ...there is a reason why the pros ride TTT's on TT bikes though they are much heavier than lightweight/climbing bikes! TT bikes of course require much much experience and skills when riding close behind one another - sp the aero bike is the best option. ...btw - those Canyon bikes are really good! Of course they don't have the "charisma" of fine Italian bikes and to my taste they look a bit... boring😎 But from a performance view they are among the best and rather affordable for what you get! I ride a Canyon TT bike and though it was not exactly cheap, for the same performance I had to spend twice at much money for a Pinarello, Colnago or Bianchi...
Can’t wait my man 🤙
@@cyclingunboxed 💪💪
I'd suggest a Canyon bike with MVDP on it....
I'd say Canyon, during the race you will be able to take advantage of others draft, so maybe maintaining speed won't be an issue , but when in need, you'll come out faster
Makes sense!
Well firstly I hope the weather holds for you outing . If I was you Fede , I’d try to convince canyon to let you do the TT on one of their Aeroads 🤣🤣🤣 preferably one with a power meter . Have a great weekend mate 👍🏽

Dunno if you know about them fed but Shimano do cleat covers for walking about i use them and cleats last way longer.
@@zedddddful yes and I also have a set. I must have shown them in an early video about accessories. I haven't used them in a while as I wasn't really concerned in wearing out the yellow bits. A different issue is the cleat breakage.
@@fede1275 ah fair enough yeah wearing out and breaking is quite the difference I've never had a Shimano break i think that'd be quite dangerous in certain situations.
Mate.wider tires better traction on downhill.less vibrations.those bilions very little potholes and imperfections in tarmac slov you down.i believe over all the science is right it makes sence.i think in future you will accept this and you will ride 30-32c tires.it is just safer faster more comfortable.aero gain in this case is bit less then decreased vibrations.accept that

ciao fede.. i have had good experience with the vanrysel in 4 years and never had a single problem with it. in fact i always reccomend them because of the design when you change to a new cleats.. they also tend to have a longer life vs the stock shimano.. this is just my experience doing long kilometers of cycling.. im using look now by the way :) because of the assioma power meter.. keep it up!

@@fede1275 direi de si!.. o magari doppo qualche anno di produzione hanno cambiato anche il materiale?.. the only annoying on the shimano cleats like what you said on the video is, the yellow part it is very crappy..
You live in the past. I race on minimum 28mm tyres. I have even raced on 35mm tyres and lost nothing to the old school riders who are riding 23mm tyres at 120psi
I am not arguing against that, I just don't agree with a blank statement that wider tyres are faster period
@fede1275 .. I recently raced on a rough criterium circuit on 35mm tyres against other riders on 25mm tyres. These riders normally beat me easily but it was completely different. I just glided over the bumps while they were shaken to death. I won easily
great, that is why I mentioned crit racing as the best application for wide tyres, as well as comfort
Great vid, thanks. I’m sure my partner and I saw you at Rapha London last week, at the time of the carnival. Keep well.
Sure, I was off duty, with my wife and our friends, say hi next time
I use time pedal.Time's cleats is very last longer than any brand.
Argon 18 came with Look SPD pedals. lasted 1500km. dealer exchanged them for an identical pair. about 1500 km later, the 2nd pair also failed. the spring tension of the clip suddenly just fails.....they were replaced at my cost with Wellgo pedals, at less than half the price. 10,000km later, still working fine, thankfully!!!!
Yikes! Glad you're ok. Two piece cleats sound like an accident waiting to happen. I just switched to time pedals and wish I'd done so sooner, the power transfer is amazing. Wearing a jersey around the house, why not, I've done it. Cheers!
Blighty and her crap weather 🤪🤪🤪🏴
On smooth roads narrow higher pressure is fine. But you'll have less grip when wet. However sprinting and jerking the bike on wide soft tyres is not going to be fast.
One more instance of "you get what you pay for".
I’ve never had a Shimano cleat fail but the moment I tried aftermarket (Merlin cycles own brand) it failed almost immediately!
Track racers use thin tyres today, which is strange if they are faster. Maybe they are faster if there are road surface irregularities but the roads I use are very smooth. Also, the narrower tyres will have less contact area, and less likely to have punctures. The 30mm tires will puncture more, wear out quicker and require more purchases?!
Wider tires are faster…period. The data do not lie. Look at your car as a perfect example and why sports car always use wider tires. Thin tires only had one advantage when it comes to water treading though new tread pattern technology now makes this irrelevant, again, look at your car. Even XC bikes are now using 2.4” tires.
On a straight line cars with thinner tires are faster. They are wide for traction in the corners.
@@fede1275 which is the exact same argument for wider tires on road bikes. GCN already tested this and shows that a 35mm tire is optimal. Better traction = better cornering = more confidence = faster overall.
that would depend on the use of the bike, maybe for a crit race yes. On more general use is debatable as you don't have an engine pushing you at high speeds.
@fede1275 LOL! Thank you for validating again! Yes, general use... as 99.99% of the population who cycle use their bikes predominantly for commuting and not racing, speed is no longer an issue so your argument is null. And for the .01% who do use their bikes specifically for racing, they do not ride in a straight line. Last I checked, the tour de France actually had corners, imagine that?
did you watch the Nero show episode with NorCal? He also said that the 105 rule is the most important ratio to follow for aero and then narrower is faster. Then if you are racing in crit or any twisty corners with bad surface then wider is preferable. I don't argue with that, I just argue against blank statements like "wider are faster period".
i ride roughly 10k kilometers a year but my cleats never look like that. sometimes i dont know what people do with their shoes. but im on look since beginning. moral of the story: dont cheap out on cleats :D
I'm on 15c tyres mate, staying ahead of the trend curve
Sharp 😅
I don't blame you for not going near those cleats again, I wouldn't. I use Shimano SPDs because I'm a filthy amateur who likes to be able to walk into the cafe without a lot of clip-clopping (also, I came from MTB and touring). Decathlon don't have many stores in Australia, so I have no direct experience of any of their products, and don't know anyone who has. Hopefully the same weird design processes don't apply to their fancy bikes, I'd like to ride a Van Rysel!
Exactly the same failure has happened to me twice. We'll have to stick to the originals.
2 piece cleats are for when you change to a new set, you remove either the front or rear piece and replace with the new so that you don’t have to relocate in the same place with a template which makes it easier and quicker, you obviously have to set them up the first time but then after that it’s super easy 👍🏻. I use VP 2 piece cleats which are great and last at least one season maybe more 😊🚴🏼👍🏻.

Devo dire che nei commenti c'e' solo un caso con Shimano originali e tante rotture con i cleats compatibili...
Another great informative video! Thanks Federico! 👊
Thanks again!
What you seem to oversee is...what is the messured width? Numbers on the tyre don´t mean anything, a 28mm can be 28 on one rim, and 31 on a other. My take is, you have to have the right rim/tyre combination. For my Wheels that is a 28mm GP5000, gives my a snug transition from tyre to rim and matches my rim width of 30.5mm perfectly.
Yes, it seems that the 105 ratio is the priority for aero, as the rim slightly larger than the tyre. But then between 2 set ups both at 105 ratio, which one is faster? The fatter or the slimmer?
@@fede1275 I would assume, if you take the rider out of the equation, the thinner. But that is only in the lab. In the real world, where the Wind is always changing, that would be very minimal.
Personally, I've only had cleats break due to excessive walking and it's almost always the front part, that is damaged more. Now I use cleat covers. Also, I think that the coloured parts are more grippy with shimano cleats vs. the 'knock-offs'. Final point. I member Trace Velo talking about cleats and how the 'knock-offs' may/may not contain fibreglass compared to shimano cleats, meaning rhat rhey are more susceptible of breaking.
Thank you Federico for bringing this to our attention - pedals and cleats are a SAFETY related issue because a fail could mean falling off the bike. Personally, I would never compromise safety to save a couple of dollars. I think that ORIGINAL is possibly always best for safety. HOWEVER . . . For a SHIMANO cleat to break is an extremely surprising and is probably a very rare occasion - it is making me wonder if there is an issue with the YELLOW Shimano cleats as opposed to their RED or Blue ones ! Either way, it might be a good idea to check our shoes/cleats before we ride :-)
Yes, you are right, but I was not expecting that. I really looked at the Van Rysel ones not like a cheap alternative, but as something that could be as good if not better. I will stick with Shimano. The yellow cleats provided with the pedals actually wear out the yellow bits quicker than the replacement cleats bought separately though
@@fede1275 Yes so I hear :-) When I saw the Decathlon pedal manufactured in two parts I really did not like the idea ! Thanks again and happy riding (SAFE too :-)
If you had at least tested also cleats from Aliex.....
I would not do that, I actually thought the Van Rysel ones could be comparable if not better than the Shimano
From about 1988 rode 23mm continental grand prix. Then around 1992 they were discontinued and something called "grand prix 4 season" replaced them. We're not as good but better puncture resistance I would say. Still cotton sidewalls. Roll forward to 2024 "grand prix 4 season " now have solid rubber sidewalls and very uncomfortable. Bring back cotton sidewalls.
I had twice the same experience where the cleats from Decathlon broke down, and not necessary under lots of pressure. I'm through with them and only use Shimano's, never had any problem so far. Thanks a lot for raising the point. Keep the good work!
Yes,I confirm,with me the same story,twice after 3000-3500 km...I dont buy them anymore/Decathlon/...
Careful now. Using Shimano is like taking a Cleat-a-RISK! Also, I just destroyed the 69-th like! Shame on me.
Hey! I have previously used the decathlon cleats for LOOK pedals and have had the same issue! 4 times! All 4 sets of cleats had the front tip broken! , All were used for less than 2 months! Decathlon is a good company but very horribly designed cleats!
@@azizhirkani7043 ouch 😱
I think in this instance I would stick with Shimano, ditch the van Rysel ones. However when anything changes on my bike a new noise or sensation I investigate and locate. I cant list the number of potential issues I have remedied before catastrophe out on the bike. Happy that you didnt have a serious incident though.
Glad you didn't crash 👌🏻 I use SPD Pedals and cleats, so much less hassle...and easier to walk in...yes I know, a roadie using SPDs cast me from the road bike community 🤪
I had this exact same thing with a non genuine Shimano SPD-SL cleat, on a steep climb I was out of the saddle and the cleat snapped. My momentum threw me off bike and I cut my leg. Nothing serious but was painful and could have been bad. The one that broke was not a Decathlon/Van Rysel cleat, just a random Shimano copy. I've never had any problem with genuine Shimano cleats. Moral of story, only buy genuine cleats.

There is no good reason to use anything but spd offroad cleats.
It is against the rules... LOL
There’s not as much choice of shoes….
SPD dont have the adjustability or wide platform of SL cleats more susceptible to hotspots also.
