    Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

    Sometimes fruit trees purchased from a nursery have been grafted into a different rootstock. If so, sprouts that grow from the bottom of the tree (well, where else would they grow - duh!) will not be the fruit tree you expect because they're growing from the rootstock.

    Safety suggestion: When you build the new fencing, lay down fencing horizontally on the ground on the outside of the new fencing. This prevents dogs from borrowing under the fence because they can't dig through the horizontal fence to get under the regular fencing. It doesn't have to be ugly. You can let dirt accumulate on top or add your own dirt and let plants grow in top. As long as they run into it a few inches down when they try to dig their way in, it will be effective. By the by, my money is on them having dug/squeezed under the electric fencing as their way in. It's great that you were able to rescue them. Best of luck. Take care.

    • @theindieprojects
      @theindieprojects  Před 11 měsíci +77

      You’re right as the next night they came back and tried to dig underneath so it’s definitely how they got under the other fencing! We will be implementing a predator skirt around the permanent enclosure and will show our current set up in the next video 😊

    Hi Theo, I can fully sypathise with your back problems. I am now a 72 year old Ex-Pat, living in Germany since 1977 and in the late 80's I severely damaged my back. I was hospitalized three times until I met this really good Physiotheropist, who explained about the muscles running vertically left and right of the spinal colomn becoming weaker as we age unles we do something about it, because when they are weak they no longer hold the discs in place and nerves get pinched (pain). She taught me a really good excercise which I still do today and it only needs about 10 minutes per day. Lie flat on your back with one leg straight out and the other with the knee up and the sole of your foot as near as possible to your bottom, flat on the floor. Then push down on the raised leg and the opposite elbow. Don't raise yourself off the floor, just keep pressure on these points for about one minute. After that, relax for a minute and then do the same with the opposite leg and elbow. Keep this up for maybe 10 minute per day and the muscles left and right of your spinal cord will strengthen and stop you pinching nerves. I sincerely hope you will give this a go, because it solved my problems and I was working in the construction trade until I retired in 2016 without ever having any repeats of my earlier bad problems.

    Fruittrees are grafted onto roots, its the only way you can control the sort of fruit it will produce, so if the sprouts come from the bottom, they will most likely not produce quality fruit, but what you can do is let a stem grow, and then graft a twig from one of the favorite trees, that way you take advantage of the developed root from the damaged tree, and the new one will grow very fast, once the graft cachtes on.

    There are dogs that can jump over fences and your fence would be an easy jump for them. It needs to be at least 8 feet tall to prevent the jumpers from getting in. Also, the best protection for all the animals, including the kitties, are farm dogs. They are loyal and protective. Getting a couple will keep all of you safe. There are particular breeds that make especially good guardians. I know you’re cat people, but you love animals and each dog has its purpose. Also, when you’re away it would be less of a concern for you.

    If you decide to try to allow the damaged trees to attempt to regrow, cut them above the "root stock". Frequently, trees are grafted to a root base of another variety, as it may have better root properties. Cutting above it may encourage growth from the top instead of the root stock which may not be as good a fruit producer as the graft. If you are trying to salvage the sprouts growing from the roots, I would find the healthiest one and trim the rest. You could wait and see which ones look best towards the end of the season before trimming. Otherwise you just end up with a messy cluster. If the trees are growing from the root stock, it doesn't mean they wont be good, just might not be a popular variety, or not as prolific. (Robin E.)

    • @robine916
      @robine916 Před 11 měsíci +3

      I was just wondering if you could do your own grafting onto the root stock? Might be worth your while to investigate how to take cuttings from the healthy trees and grafting onto those roots that survived. (Robin E.)

My lurcher can jump a 7 ft fence and once dogs know you have livestock, they are likely to return. If they got hold of the small goat, she wouldn’t stand much chance. Sending all best wishes xx

    It looks like some of those trees were grafted, so don't cut to low, cut above the bulge or you'll be growing root stock. The spouting from the ground is probably root stalk, and probably won't bear well. Grafting is popular in Italy and Portugal ask around and see if they will come and look at your trees and show you how to do it to support your trees.

    Something similar happened where my daughter goes to Riding for the Disabled in Inverurie , Scotland . The pony ( Tony ) she rides there was attacked and bitten by dogs . They weren't wild dogs but were off the lead and the owners weren't in control of them . She had a stroke during the first lockdown and is now paralysed on her left side. She always rode horses so this is very important to her . Hopefully Tony will be able to be ridden when he has healed. These ponies are so well trained . Donkeys are ideal companion animals, fierce and fearless, and great protectors of their barnyard companions! Our sweet fuzzy donkey would chase off any coyote foolish enough to attempt to come in to our pasture.
    Also, there is a breed of Portuguese donkey - the "Burro de Miranda" that is nearing extinction and needs rescuing - they have lovely dispositions, are extra nice companions while still being very good at guarding against predators.

    In Australia we call fenced off areas on a Farm/Property Paddocks. Often called north, south, East, West Paddock, top or bottom Paddock, you could even name each Paddock after each animal like Tild's Paddock, Gingie Bear Paddock, Fernando's Paddock, mind you Gingie & Fernando would be better names for different forest trails! Hope you feel a lot better soon, especially Tild's after such a shocking experience. Your content is always great, Love It!

    If the shoots are coming from above the graft, keep it and fence the sprouts after sealing the wound with Lac Balsam. (5' tall (1.5 meter) cage required) If the sprouts are coming from the root stock, cut it down - no question. 😊 Unless you have designs of returning this property to a commercial orchard, leave the pine trees for ecological diversity, please.

    Bee, you have over and over proven to be not only one of the two kindest people, a very strong and multi-talented girl, and that there are a lot of "unexplored skills" to be revealed does not come as any surprise to me and all who have been so blessed to follow both of you.
    Of the many things making you so special and proving your strength, is your courage to share the very hard and difficult times in life.
    Thank you, Bee and Theo, for being such inspirations, no matter where we are in our lives, at the beginning, middle or end, or how much or little money you've got, there is ALWAYS something to take with us to inspire us to improve our lives and the lives of others, in each and every one of your videos.
    I'm not a religious person, as I don't know of any religious book that wasn't written by men hundreds of years ago, that can inspire me when I know so many horrible and evil people have used and still today are using the same book, the same texts, to do harm to others, no matter how many very good people also use the same book to do good.
    I prefer to find inspiration around me, and in people who are "just doing the right thing", not because they have to, or someone is telling them to, but because they want to, and they have the ability to show how a perfectly imperfect world can benefit so many, and without causing any harm to anyone.
    Thank you, Bee and Theo, and all my co-subscribers who have made it possible for Bee and Theo, to share their life, their perfectly imperfect life, with us, and give us so so much!
    Peace and love to each and one of you! / Pia ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

    BEA on the peach tree sprouts.... Deep South Homestead did a video a week or two ago about the fall equinox. I would think that on that day it would be a good chance to try something with the extra sprouts. I don't know if Portugal has arborist in your area but I would check... because they would be more experienced with the area and weather and when to replant and prune. Some trees are pruned after its cold so the sap goes down. Best of luck and praying Matild recovers well and the bad dogs stay away.

    If you are going to leave stumps in the hope that the graft wood sends up shoots, cut at least 12 inches (30 cm) above the graft and seal the wound with Lac Balsam (formulated in Germany) to give the graft it's best chance at life. If the graft is dead, remove the entire tree. Don't waste your time on the rootstock. The root stock may very well be another species. If you are going to keep any quantity of fruitwood on the premises, make certain it is well segregated from the orchards and all equipment.

    Sending Healing Energy to 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Matilda 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. You guys are doing a great job with securing their safety. A great protector for the goats and chickens could be the Great Pyrenees Dog. A donkey would be great, too. 👍🏼 Just my 2 cents 😉 ❤. I have a GPD mixed with a Kelpie named Willow and she is awesome. Love to you all. ❤

    My grandparents had peach , cherry all types of apples. If a fruit tree is full grown. They won’t produce again in your life time. If the fruit trees are young they can come back and produce. In the next few years.

    You need livestock guardian dogs. And definitely a pair. Ackbash are smaller than most but have been used forever with sheep or goats. I have Ackbash that I was importing from Turkey and already working at 12 months.

    Those are shelf fungus, very common in dead trees. If trees don't leaf out at all, they are likely dead, even if there is 'spring' in the branches. You might get a new sucker growing from the root, as you saw, but you'd be best served by cutting them down. I noted that someone above mention the rootstock / grafting issue. These resprouts may very well be from the rootstock only, but you dont have much choice - it's the only part that is still alive. As for the suckers; excellent question! You need to choose the strongest one and prune out the rest. You might have to do this a couple times, but after a while the stongest one will be putting out enough hormones fom the apical meristem (the growing tip) to suppress the dormant buds in the bark below them. Good luck!

    Theo you should try ice tub not hot tub. I have back issues from working electrical. The stretches you are doing are a must . I recommend try find different stretches' as some unusual ones helped me more then ones I could think of myself. Like a back wall crawl for example. Dogs can climb the fences I recommend the electrical movable type.

    ❤❤❤❤. I believe that the tree you see growing from the roots of a dead tree or not the same tree. I believe they called them suckers? Because they suck the life out of the tree.

    Hi, Bee and Theo. Good job marking your fruit trees for future pruning. I’m sorry to hear about Mathilde. It’s a good that you were near, Bee, to scare those dogs away. It’s also good that it was relatively easy to move them closer to you. I hope that those dogs are caught as they are menace to the community. Take care❤️❤️
