@@sarahweis1703 Exactly. There are a number of problems with Tarja.
      A. her impressive high notes notwithstanding her performances never feel balanced: there are to many off pitch notes (not so much in this performance, but more in general), her vowels are often harsh and not pretty ("iiii...)", etc.
      B. Tarja's timing is not very good. Especially when singing with the more complicated and demanding metal rythms of Nightwish her voice often does not gell: Tarja is rigid and in live performances does often not seem to get her voice to work with the music of Nightwish (I have many examples of that)
Floor on the other hand, has an enormous range like Tarja, but she is not as manic in those high notes, and she has much more control over the whole picture: beautiful fluent vowels, an effortless flow of the song and melding in with the music, excellent control over the texture and register she want to use to tell the story of the song, and excellent decisions in how she wants to use those. And what really makes Floor better is that she always makes the effort to actually feel the song and what it is about. There is simply much more emotion in Floors voice.
Tarja on the other hand always gives the feeling that she only wants to show off those high notes, while she could not care less about the rest of the song.

Let's be honest, the Phantom is the bad guy.
Henk's Phantom sounds more like a controlled murderer, the planner, ice cold, adding the edge when he get's excited.
Marko's Phantom is deranged with a veneer of "normal human".
I absolutely love both versions and always found the original Phantom to be too slick, too controlled.

    • @LongandWeirdName
      @LongandWeirdName Před 3 lety +9

Marko is the Mr Hyde to Henk's Dr Jekyl. Two very separate faces of the same Phantom. I don't know which interpretation is better. Happily, I don't have to choose just one of them. Not everything is a competition. Both interpretations have a good reason to exist. The calculating, precise, obsessed musical genius and the disfigured, passionate, powerful monster haunting the opera building. Both are technically correct. The best kind of correct.
Same with the Christines. Floor feels more natural. The youthful new rising starlet with a gift she is only now beginning to fully be able to grasp control of, while Tarja sounds more "classically trained" and controlled. Even in her final outbursts, she still doesn't let passion take control of the instrument. Two very different women being portrayed. Both talented as hell. Personally, I give Floor a slight advantage, as she lets me feel the character a bit more. She doesn't perform the song. She becomes the character. I don't quite feel that with Tarja. She remains Tarja singing Christine's role. Splendidly. But still, her personality shines a bright light directly at the edge of the stage making me painfully aware of the fourth wall, if you know what I mean. When it comes to vocal talent, they are both unmatched and unique. They are both brilliant, but Floor has a slight edge.
To illustrate the difference a bit more, I'll use a different A.L. W. musical piece as performed by two different artists. Memories from Cats. Barbra Streisand does a technically perfect job. Sings every note just right. But it still feels like a song. Recorded in a professional recording studio, by a great singer. But a song. And then, there's the Elaine Paige version from the official DVD recording of the Broadway stage oerformance. When she sings it, you can feel the desperation for another chance of the old cat, once living a perfect life. You can almost feel the matted fur, the bald spots, and the knots and scars on its skin. She doesn't just perform. She paints the character with her voice. Barb makes you nod in appreciation of vocal prowess. Elaine makes you want to pet the poor animal. I hope that makes sense.

I still have no idea why people have to have competition as fans of singers. Tarja is awesome (I honestly think her singing has gotten better as she’s gotten older and using different vocal types/techniques). Floor is awesome (also as she’s grown in age and vocal maturity has gotten better). They are both unbelievable singers. Leave it at that. I’m a guitar guy...I don’t compare EVH or Steve Vai with SRV or Clapton. They are all great in their own uniqueness. You can’t say who’s “better” there is no better or worse...they are different. Same with Tarja and Floor - completely different voices but both great. My brain resonates more with Floor’s voice same as I like the way SRV plays blues more than Clapton or BB King. And EVH is my rock guy (but I also love Vai and Malmsteen and Slash and Petrucci). My point: enjoy them both for who they are and their voices and stop comparing them like fanboy/girl trolls. @@Nikioko Being an Opera fan for many years, If I had to choose I would actually prefer Placido Domingo, who actually had a more diversified career inside Opera than Pavarotti had (of course in certain roles such as Tonio, Pavarotti would excell, but its just normal that each singer has his most suited parts), as well as Domingo had a bigger voice who could easily sing above a huge orchestra in many wagnerian roles (Pavarotti's voice hadn't enough stamina for Wagner, there's no microphones on real Opera) and inspite of the natural aging of the voice Domingo still goes on, adapting to newer roles in recent years and even exploring a lower range with brilliance! However Pavarotti who was amazing too, knew better how to make it mainstream also, specially when is voice was getting already out of prime from the 90's on, it was a wise move, even commercially, but what I mean is: never think that Domingo is Less than Pavarotti inside the Opera world, because it is the other way around! And on the older generations there were other tenors as great as Pavarotti (Bjorling, Corelli, del Monaco, etc... and Pavarotti knew it!).

Elizabeth pegged her at least an E#. G is possible. There is a 26 minute video of every note in her range through her single career. Kitos does mean thank you. You should know she had a cold and could not sing during her reversal for the show. Tarja IS a trooper. Finishing a long world tour with the biggest show they have ever done at home in Finland. They were welcomed home by the fans as national heroes. You can imagine the uproar when.the band posted the Dear Tarja letter online that they told her she should wait till tomorrow to open. Motivations we can only Guess's at. I might hope part of it was after.the high of the concert and the tour they at least wanted to let her enjoy the night. But as she said in her interview a few days later. She was crying tears of joy after that show. Her pain and efforts with the showmanship had paid off. Hearing the crowd so into the performance. Singing along with her. What artist would not love that feedback. There is no drug quite like the stage. It was Charles Dickens who compared it to the opium pipe. What is it that drew Ozzy Osbourne out of drugs and alcohol, performing on stage. The audience feedback. Of course withdrawl is a real thing. Concerts end. Tours end. Then you are home in the quiet and everything you left there is back. If you don't have a balance at home...trouble follows. That is why I am so glad she has a family. Husband and child to keep her grounded. Friends no doubt. Then when recharged she can throw herself into creative projects. Like her book. Like concerts. I would have to agree with everything that has happened in the world especially 2020, that if ever there was a quite time to reflect and put pen to paper about your life and why it is you do what you do, this is it. Could not tour so this seems a good project. Time with family no bad thing either. Now yes book is done, she is writing and recording new music. Busy busy diva, at her home in Spain.

@@ralfmeyer9086 It is important to differentiate what is personal taste and what is fact. It is a fact that Tarja has a powerful operatic voice and Floor has a soft operatic voice. This is not a matter of opinion, it is clear and has to do with the vocal characteristics of each singer. It is a personal taste to prefer that Cristine, the character played by Tarja and Floor in this song, have a soft or powerful operatic voice. According to my personal taste, I prefer a powerful operatic voice in this song. I think a powerful operatic voice is better suited to this song, since Cristine is a solo opera singer, and at the end of this song the idea is that she sing with all the power of a great diva. You can prefer a Cristine in a more delicate voice, this is your personal taste and there is no problem with that. However, in fact, Floor does not have an operatic voice as powerful as Tarja. Floor's power lies in her belting technique. I say that because I know Floor's work well. I've been following her since After Forever. This does not mean that one is better than the other. Each of them has different voices and made different vocal study options.

Plenty of respect to Floor, I know she is more skilled as far as being well rounded. However ...
As pretty and well done as her version is, it's not captivating. I don't think I'd ever go on a whim and listen to it again unless I forgot what it sounds like? This just isn't her song by comparison. I'm sure there is a song she can do that Tarja couldn't touch.
But, Tarja owns this. Tarja's version is way more ... there is a confident charisma about even how she performs it and how she looks when the music REALLY hammers down even. She sings it like it was written for her. Her voice has a darkness and grandeur to it like she is untouchable somehow, like she is this queen of pure elegance. Like, it's literally what I expect a grand dark queen in a storybook to sound like without being cheesy and it feels like a fantasy and it takes me somewhere.
Floor just sounds . . . very talented? There are no butterflies, I've never felt the magic. I've never had a Floorgasm. I'm glad Tuomas and everyone can keep working, but I've never cared for her and it's not to spread hate or like anyone is incomparable to Tarja. I enjoyed some songs from Anette. I think Anette had a beautiful vocal tone while she might not be on some vocal skill level they are.
But I think Nightwish became half the band it was when Tarja left. I say this not as a dig, it's just Floor is a massively talented singer. The end. There are plenty of bands with massively talented singers in this genre. Floor singing in Nightwish just sounds like one of those bands with a massively talented singer, maybe more talented than others. Tarja however was not just that, but wasn't like other opera singers. ( I know she isn't an actual opera singer ) ---- Tarja has vocal traits and qualities that you don't hear in other opera singers, but you can hear other people and go maybe " Oh that sounds like a less talented Floor Jansen " ; in this industry I don't think I've heard anyone even relatively semi-famous that sounds like Tarja.
It'd be like taking Stevie Nicks out of Fleetwood Mac in her prime and putting in Hayley Williams from Paramore. Hayley might be a better vocalist, but way more people sound similar to Hayley than they do Stevie Nicks and Stevie Nicks can deliver something uniquely her and unique to Fleetwood Mac that no matter how many notes Hayley could learn to hit, she could never deliver what made the band special in the first place. It'd be a whole new project.

Those butterflies don't say anything about a singer, only about the listener's emotional connection to him/her. Some have it with Tarja, yet there are others who can't hear or feel that. No matter how many times they listen to her, it's just a voice that doesn't speak to them. They may get this feeling with Floor or Anette, though, and for them Nightwish is just a half of the band with Tarja.
No judgement here, as my loyalty lies with Marko and we are both equally screwed now :)

@@siksimiksiFTW I know they don't, it was just part of a statement. But But my point was that as talented as Floor is, she doesn't have what made Nightwish . . . Nightwish.
and now with Marco gone, I'm sure you and I can both agree Nightwish is even . . . LESS Nightwish. It literally sounds like when one or two members of a band go off and start another band or project and say " well we're going to make what we couldn't make with ______ " and it's not that they're less talented, they just don't have THAT thing that was captivating in the first place.
Marco, Tarja and Tuomas were each pioneers in their own right and now with two of them gone the band just isn't special anymore. FOR ME at least.

@@siksimiksiFTW Like I said I'm not saying one is better than the other, but it isn't Nightwish anymore. What Nightwish is now, you can prefer it. It's not any better than the original. It's just doesn't have what made it special anymore.
You can't have Fleetwood Mac without Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie. Better singers could've replaced them, or Tarja. But what put them on the map and made them memorable and noteworthy is gone.
Floor just sounds like a heightened better version of other women with comparable voices just without her training. No one sounds like Tarja and that's something noteworthy.
No one sounds like Cher, no one sounds like Tina Turner, no one sounds like, Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox,Michel'le, Donna Summer, Ann Wilson, Nina fucking Hagen. Kate, the greatest artist of all time BUSH.
When just the sound of your voice alone becomes synonymous with who you are on a level that people instantly recognize it? No matter what you say? You've achieved greatness and made an imprint on people.

@@iTeacupPanda You keep saying that it isn't Nightwish any more. You can't decide that, only Nightwish can. Essentially this means only Tuomas can. And if you can't hear anything special in Floor's voice, it's your problem, not theirs. Tarja was never Nightwish, she was just the voice of he band, one of the instruments, like Floor is now. She hasn't been the voice of Nightwish for 16 years, yet they are greater now than they ever were with Tarja, and they keep making imprint on people. Just not on you and many other Tarja fans. Nightwish is still Nightwish and will still be Nightwish no matter who their lead singer is or if they are doing an instrumental without a lead singer at all. You can keep repeating it is not so, but this doesn't make it true.

The Floor Tarja arguments are nonsense. Both are virtuoso's, and masters of their craft. Differences in style - but both bring a lot to the table others can only dream to achieve. We all have our personal favorites (Floor for me, because I knew her music before nightwish... and frankly, I like Tarja's music more now she is on her own.) but THEY dont give a cr@p and are great friends... What more is there to say? Floor asked Tarja before accepting the NW temporary gig... I think that speaks volumes. Oh, and Marco is phenomenal.

Talking about musicals. They asked Tim Akkerman (blond curly hair, on the couch) to play Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar after this season aired. Not sure if it had anything to do with Beste Zangers, but that's a huge role. Too bad covid fucked it all up.

The other cool thing is that it was raining hard and the tent over the set was starting to leak. You can see some water pouring down in the background. They were afraid it was going to fall down on them. And it added to the gloom and expectation of the song.
