I would actually recommend Tarot "Mama" (GENESIS cover) to really see his vocal capabilities and range (from very low to very high), but this is almost impossible to find in normal quality online.

Do not do it. Marko's cover from Autiosaari is what we in Germany call an earworm (catchy tunes❓). I haven't got the song out of my head for days.
One thing I've been thinking about with Marko is that how he had that botched vocal nodule surgery in the 90s that made him lose his upper falsetto for quite some time. His dedication to his craft is tireless. I can't imagine the amount of practice and setbacks and frustrations he must have gone through. It was so cool to hear him use his voice in so many ways on that show!

Floor is a once in a lifetime phenomenon. She is of a superclass but not recognized enough. Marco is as always stunning and is able to be there also when Floor is there, knowing that Floor is a deeply friend who shall give him all the space he needs when he sings with her. A perfect couple in this song as well as in Nightwish.

What I love about Marco's voice is that there's a fragility to it. What I mean by that is it somehow sounds delicate, but also has an inherent strength. I can't think of any other way to really describe it. It's strong in and of itself (it's not going to fall apart on it's own), but gives the impression that if it's mishandled in any way it could shatter into a million pieces. Like a fine china or cut crystal.

Have you seen Floor and Marco singing “While Your Lips Are Still Red”? If not, you should get on that! 😃
Elizabeth: Marco is singing in Finnish and Finnish has vovel changes in the middle of the word which you assumed to be stylistic changes but those are actually part of the language. For example, 5:26 Marco sings "poikas' syntymäpäivä" (the birthday of your son) there's vovel change from "ä" to "i" the last syllable. Near 5:53 is word "pieni" (small) which has change from "i" to "e" during first syllable. At 6:03 Marco sings "siunauksen" (a blessing) where is change from "i" to "u" in first syllable and "a" to "u" in the second. Finnish has no silent letters so you have to pronounce all the vovels in all syllables. The syllables go like this: syn-ty-mä-päi-vä, pie-ni, siu-nauk-sen

Marco could front any band, anywhere, anytime. A band is lucky to have a world-class singer, let alone two. Him and Floor on one stage: how much talent do you need? These two are at the top of the talent tree.

The Finnish lyrics were by Vexi Salmi who sadly passed away this year. Many of his 3000+ recorded songs are iconic in Finland.
This was performed at the yearly Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas), which is a festival that travels around Finland during the Holidays. ;-)

In the finnish language the ”A” vowels are often quite bright. Thats probably why you are hearing it.
it's funny how accents tend to disappear when singing, especially with native English speakers. One who doesn't is Janet Devlin. She sings with her native Irish Accent. it might not be obvious to someone who doesn't speak / hear English all the time, but it's really unique and quite fetching.

Well, I guess, in this case we are talking about Ä vowel in syntymäpäivä. That is actually an alphabet of its own in Finnish and Swedish; pronounced differently though.
Same as the bright a's as we pronounce it in the south of the Netherlands where Floor and I come from. The Finnish sound is not too odd for us but the words in Finnish don't make any sense to us.

Floor also sings a song in her native (Dutch) language. You should definitly check that out too :D It's called Mama.
I'm not sure if you are vimiliar with the dutch language. But the G is often kinda 'harsh'(?). Her pronounciation of the G is actually is a bit softer than average because of her the region/dialect where she is from.
that lyric/dramatic soprano warm tone of Floor just melts you.

I always find it interesting how much music can move people. I almost never have that myself, except maybe goosebumps. I have it with certain songs, and only when I think about a lost one or something.

On stage with Nightwish in so many songs, Marco comes off as such a bad-ass, with his massive bass looking like a war axe. Here he is just such a sweetheart. Loved the wide grin while singing with Floor at the end. I'm with Elizabeth in wanting to have heard them sing together a bit longer. And might I say, Ms. Zharoff, you look adorable in your Santa hat. Merry Christmas to all!

@@darquemode1165 tbf there's so many male metal singers in Finland with huge followings and not much radio time so if the judges are more into pop I can see why they wouldn't recognise him. Even though metal is played in radios here but it's also really easy to avoid listening it if you're not into it.

Marko’s singing gave me goosebumps, and Floor’s brought tears of joy to my eyes. Thank you for so much commentary on the music of Nightwish - they have become one of my favourite bands.
These guys are amazing. My fav from them is "Kiss while you lips are still red" one the first song I heard where he took the lead and its wonderful in my opinion. You should take a look if you haven't yet.

When singers sing a duet and their voices blend that well together, it comes somehow natural for those who listen to "ship" the two artists. You know, because of the emotion filling the air, the gestures, the chemistry...
Marco and Floor are one beautiful exception: when I hear/see them performing together, I don't see "that" kind of tention, but rather a deep bond based on true affection and admiration. Something like a connection between souls, greater and purer than what could possibly be expressed by words.
So beautiful.

I was just watching the Raskasta version of this song and after hearing it my first thought was "Elizabeth would enjoy this". And what do I see as the first recommended video posted a few hours ago? ;) Awesome!
Show or Concert is "Raskasta Joulua" as in "Heavy Christmas" with many metal singer from Finland and Couple well known Quest. This was in Espoo, Finland if I remember correct and the Last Raskasta Joulua which I attended :) They do tens of concerts in December and Marko was one of the starting spark over 10 years ago.
Can't say this is one of my favorite versions, but your enthusiasm and joy in your work will always get my view and a thumbs up. Your videos bring me such joy. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
This video made me happy, caught me in a moment of inner distress. I've seen some of your reactions before and I've hear this performance too - but watching someone not only appreciating it but showing it so gorgeously by facial expressions... Really glowing and by that showing how good the music is. Didn't mind the interruptions at all since it just added to the moment by hearing the enthusiasm and appreciation in words. Too. This was the closing concert of the 2017 "Raskasta Joulua" (= Heavy Christmas) tour from Helsinki.
Heavy Christmas concerts began in 2004 and usually take place between the end of November and the week before Christmas at concerts across Finland. They feature numerous Finnish metal music singers and in recent years have also included foreigners (mainly from Sweden, including Floor). Because singers and song arrangements come from metal music, hence the name "Heavy Christmas."
You have probably read in many comments that Marko won the Finnish "Masked Singer" 2020 competition?
He made pretty amazing performances, a total of 7 songs. And the panelists were really confused because he sang differently each time. As only Marko can do!
Suggestion. If you take those songs other than the Finns, a total of 4 songs and make them one reaction video? Each video is about 3-4 minutes long, but you can cut off the Finnish explanation and other sections. However, not many people outside Finland understand the Finnish language ... If you just take a song, it will be about 4x2min. Four different songs. Four different Marko ...

Hi Elizabeth! some linguistic insight: the brightness of his /a/ vowel is due to the finnish language -- its one of those languages that exhibit "vowel harmony" i.e. there are two contrasting sets of vowels (e.g. bright vs. dark) and words are permitted to have only of one set, so there are two /a/, two /o/, two /u/: the dark ones being as you would read them in english, 'ah' 'oh' and 'oo', while the "bright" ones are really fronted , and (i.e. ü) (like the german vowels or french and )
edit: FYI, obviously 'eh' and 'ee' exist too -- but they count as neutral vowels and can be everywhere
