    If you want to get a true flavour of Ayreon, their most reacted to video is "The Day That The World Breaks Down". It's a 13-minute song, which is the opening track from the album "The Source", and it features 11 different singers. Naturally, all their parts within the song are quite short, and there are long instrumental passages too (in various styles), but I guess 11 vocalists will give you a lot to analyse! Arjen also made a very interesting and entertaining video, which is here: czcams.com/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/video.html. It might not be the best suited for your style of reaction, but you might enjoy watching it anyway.

And also I think this channel is the best react and analyse in the internet.

    • @frankroos1167
      @frankroos1167 Před 3 lety +3

      Personally, the best way to get a true flavour of Ayreon is to get a full album and listen to it end-to-end. Although individual songs are absolutely fanatstic, a full album is really the best way to appreciate Arjen's work.
      A single song out of an opera doesn't make the opera. That really goes for these things from Ayreon.
      Also, you will hear more of the rock thing. This particular song, as beautiful as it is, doesn't really rock. It fits really well within the Electric Castle, though.
      It won't be good for a reaction video, though. These albums are kind of looooooooong....although still too short.

    In Belgium we had the 'Metal Female Voices Fest', a 3 day festival and a combi ticket costed around 83€. In 2013 this was just a part of the line up for Sunday: Tarja, ReVamp (band with Floor Jansen), Anneke Van Giersbergen , Stream of Passion (band with Marcela),.... It was a very chill festival and most of the time band members watched the other shows from within the crowd. At the time I didn't understand how lucky I was and I'm afraid I will never have the chance again to have such an experience. I had the luck to see Anneke perform in a local bar for a very intimate acoustic set. She made some mistakes on her guitar but with her smile and silly jokes you looked past that.

    Arjen Lucessen can rarely be seen on stage, because he has stage fright. At this concert he made an exception. He plays "The Hippie" and you can see him in the track "The Garden Of Emotions". He's not an exceptionally brilliant singer but that's for you to comment on. Also most of the other cast can be seen in this song. Only "The Highlander" (portrait by Derek 'Fish' Dick) has already died at this point in the story. But you see "The Egyptian" (Anneke van Giersbergen), "The Indian" (Simone Simons), "The Barbarian" (John 'Jaycee' Cuijpers), "The Roman" (Edwin Balogh), "The Futureman" (Edward Reekers) and "The Knight" (Damian Wilson). Also as a special guest, there's John de Lancie as the Narrator, or "Forever". Marcella Bovio, Dianne van Giersbergen (not related to Anneke) and Jan Willem Ketelaers are performing backing vocals. Here's the link for 'The Garden Of Emotions': czcams.com/video/w6rBHaOmXMo/video.html

    • @grungegrumpy3585
      @grungegrumpy3585 Před 3 lety +3

      Aye, Anneke would really deserve some central stage time in this channel by now. Imo her performances at the The Gathering TG25 concert doing 'Travel' and 'On most surfaces' are quite exemplary of her stunning vocal capabilities and impressive sound. Add their live version of 'Strange Machines' on Pinkpop '96 and you get both a nice picture of her development through the decades, while also getting an idea of how she inspired a whole generation of lead female metal singers and while getting a hunch of The Gathering's grunge and Pink Floyd roots and inspiration.
      Anneke explored a very broad range of styles, with maybe only progrock elements and her unique vocal presence as a common denominator.
      The 2015 Masters of Rock performance of 'The Storm' by Anneke's and Arjen's mutual proggy project 'The Gentle Storm' is also worth a listen as it shows both an excellent Anneke as lead and Marcela as support.
      Both rougher and lighter stuff by Anneke and Devin with The Devin Townsend Project is also worth experiencing: varying from 'Kingdom' and 'Grace' in the Retinal Cicrcus show to 'Ih Ah'.
      Finally, Anneke's cooperations with Danny Cavanagh and similar artists along with her solo acoustic performances are worth a listen.
      Edit: Oh, and might I mention Ayreon's 'Comatose' performed by Anneke and Katatonia's Jonas Renske? :)

    For more Ayreon, 'The Day That The World Breaks Down' (with 11 singers) and 'Everybody Dies' are very good and popular examples. But maybe one of the songs of the newest album (released just this Friday 25th) would be nice as a thank you for Arjen for helping out personally to unblock your video? To promote the new album a bit 😉
    Also appreciate that you mentioned the timing on 'THE'. Such details on little imperfections make a reaction&analysis video even better. And these ladies can appreciate it too, as they all three are voice teachers. I think you could actually see from Floor's smile to the others, they knew it right then, handled it and smiled it away without regret.

    Hey there! So glad you have dipped your toe into the fantastic world of Arjen and Ayreon. He is a wonderfully prolific Dutch composer and instrumentalist. He always surrounds himself with the absolute best in vocal talent for the genre from around the recording world. His music is considered progressive metal but in reality touches on a wide range of styles. Where Tuomas leans more toward the cinematic side Arjen is far more theatrical. He has said he was influenced in his youth by rock operas like Jesus Christ Superstar and his approach to songwriting reflects characterization and plot. You will meet among others, Irene Jansen (if you haven't already) you know who's sister who really came into her own via her work with Aryeon and the likes of Tommy Karevik (formerly with US based symphonic metal band Kamelot) and the amazing Michael Mills (lead vocalist and multi instrumentalist with Aussie band Toehider). There are so many great singers who appear on the vast discography for Ayreon. Ayreon Universe Live is a best of concert where Arjen tried to get all the original singers to recreate their roles. There are so many incredible songs. The Day That The World Breaks Down would be a great starting place (for educational experience) since Arjen narrates via messaging and you see him, the vocalists and soloists performing in either his studio or in their own spaces. He gives a bit of background on the performers, the concept behind the recording and see him perform in studio. You will enjoy his self deprecating sense of humor and his appreciation of all those he invites to work with him. As usual I jabber on too much but I have become a massive fan and am currently buying his catalog.He has an actual rock opera called The Theater Equation. Check it out. There are clips on CZcams.

    As for Marcela, who admittedly had only a backing role in this song (and most of the concert), Arjen actually created a whole project around her. You might want to check Streams of Passion "Live in the Real World", where she sings along with her sister. They did a rendition of "Valley of the Queens" that's closer to the original, which you might want to check sometime. Besides that, their songs are somewhat darker and moody, borrowing elements from jazz esthetics. I especially recommend "Haunted", "Computer Eyes", "Calliopeia", as well as "Into the Black Hole/Cold Metal" ("Into the Black Hole", with awesome, awesome Damian Wilson, is a song from the original Ayreon and "Cold Metal" is from yet another of Arjen's projects, Ambeon).
    Oh, and "Day Eleven: Love", where Arjen sings, and Marcela reprises her role from Ayreon's "Human Equation" album :)

    you have a great ear for detail - I never would have noticed the slightly different starts on the final phrase. I love the genuine enthusiasm in your reactions!
    i’d be cool to see your take on Marcela Bovio’s lead work. Her old band Stream of Passion has an Ayreon connection - it was originally formed as a side project of Arjen Lucassen. I’d recommend A War of Our Own. Or her current band MaYaN’s song Dhyana - like Valley of the Queens it’s a gentle song compared to the rest of the band’s songs, but it beautifully showcases both Marcela’s and Laura Macri’s vocals (the band has a whopping 5 vocalists)
