Graham Coxon…probably one of the most underrated guitarists in the last 30 years. The dynamic between Alex’s bouncy bass lines and Grahams aggressive guitar is so great!

Coxon Vs James is the primary tension in the band - the alchemy that creates the gold. Coxon wanting to be Pete townshend and James wanting to be John Taylor. Add albarn’s witty lyricism and you have the ingredients for one of the great creative partnerships.
Coxon is criminally underrated though - you’re right. He is always doing stuff that doesn’t seem to make sense and that no one would think (or recommend) to do - and it works every time. So inventive.

Under normal circumstances, I’d agree. But these guys are so wound up in Oasis that they won’t approach the universal with clean ears.
I’d go beetlebum next. They need to listen to at least 5 consecutive tracks that are bops that they’ll enjoy on face value. So by the time they get hit with the universal, this is a low, no distance left to run etc, they won’t be approaching them with preconceptions

No, the song was written by Damon, but the lyrics by Graham. :)

    • @goldboy150
      @goldboy150 Před rokem +3

@@ernabergmann nope. Written by coxon. I’m sure Albarn contributed to the organ part etc but coxon wrote the guitar part, which is the melody.
Even if that information wasn’t widely available - which it is - all you have to do is listen to the guitar and either play it yourself or watch someone play it to realise that there is zero chance Albarn came up with that and that it’s 100% coxon.

Yeah, when you are in the depths of hedonism, drugs and alcoholism and the novelty wears off, the mundane and pedestrian ("coffee & TV). seems almost appealing again.
Like that episode of Peep Show when Super Hans leaves the crazy sick techno party that we never actually get to see and after he proclaims he just wants to go home and mong out to something safe like Snow Patrol.

First time commenting. Would love to see you do some more edgy britpop like Super Furry Animals 'the man don't give a fuck'. Especially since you've already done the Manics and Stereophonics and need to complete the big Welsh three. Welsh culture and music is very different from English culture, it's far more progressive, socialist leaning and definitely rebellious, this song is a good example of that. You could also cover the Manics in Cuba with Fidel Castro, the documentary is freely available on youtube and really fascinating. No offence to your English viewers but it's a bit more interesting than Oasis and Blur.

Lead vocals was actually sung by Blur guitarist Graham Coxon who also wrote it rather than Damon Albarn. I don't love Blur, I don't hate Blur, I don't mind them but I don't go out of my way to listen to them and it's got nothing to do with the Blur Vs Oasis "fued" that the media completely made up and they all went along with because it sold records lol I just ain't that into them. I do however like The Universal, which for me is their best track. Graham Coxon great guitarist though I saw him play live at a Noel Gallagher gig way back in 2012. I would rather listen to Blur than listen to Coldplay though put it that way. P.S. Graham Coxon is the geezer on the milk carton, it's about his struggle with alcohol I believe. The missing milk carton thing is not a thing in the UK btw, that's an American thing, but your theory was correct but not cos he joined a band but cos he was getting lost in alcohol.

I was in my mid 20's and living the party lifestyle at the height of Britpop, it was a great time to be alive in the UK, especially if you were going out 6 night a week, and to me and the majority of my peers, Blur were winning the Blur-vs-Oasis battle hands down, it was no contest, most Oasis fans seemed to be spotty teenagers who dressed like Liam, basically Oasis were immature brats with no manners, they were perceived as so uncool by everyone who wasn't an Oasis fan, I'd even go as far as saying they were widely hated by many, but Blur were kind of too likeable for anyone to hate, and they were just more down to earth and less shouty and LOOK AT ME. If Liam hadn't have been such an immature prick I think Oasis might have actually gone on to be the future legends they perceived themselves to be, whereas the story of Oasis turned into a pretty sad and embarrassing s***show at the end of the day, whereas the likes of Damon Albarn went on to make lots of great music and prove himself to be a genuinely gifted and talented artist (which Noel also is, but not Liam), I feel sorry for Noel as Liam basically ruined his musical career. And for others like me who grew up in the 80's Indie era which was the main driving force behind Britpop, we'll always have a soft spot for Blur as they first appeared at the tail end of the Indie era, so they sort of bridged the gap of Indie morphing into Britpop, whereas Oasis were just Britpop and bleated on about how they loved and were inspired by so many Indie bands, which sums up Oasis for me, too much talk while Blur were just getting on with it and making music. Sorry, I think Oasis made amazing music, I'm not a hater, but they were an awful, dreadful band, embarrassingly so.

I laughed out loud when you called Damon a ‘try-hard’ 😅 But I don’t know if that’s the case. I’ve always found Damon an interesting character to observe, he’s both introverted and extroverted at the same time - some days you’ll get the somber, troubled deep thinker, and other times you’ll get the manic clown. I still can’t work him out…but I love his music!

Always comparing to Oasis, man, I much prefer Blur....the Universal is amazing but I fear if you did a review you will be comparing to Oasis.... and it's on such a different level. Daniel you got this one just right tho 😉🙌👌

Yeah I hate when people can’t listen to one without comparing to the other. They are both really good bands, and they are pretty different too. It’s not worth comparing!

You guys are too Oasis to do Blur. Which is fine. Most of this country falls into either Blur or oasis and it’s a rare find if someone is both. I’m both and my wife is stoutly Oasis. I think you need to do Universal and then decide whether to proceed 😂

The Blur-Oasis hate was fabricated to get more sales for the record companies. Except, Liam took it seriously because he was always looking for a fight. Why do you think Noel and the band parted ways

In my opinion their best track was "I'm just a killer for your love" but for reactions I would stay mainstream and try "On your own" or "She's so high"

There was many British references that went over your head, that's not your fault.
The Universal is a Classic and be prepared for a complete genre change has in it's influenced by Classical Music.
The Universal Intro actually you may recognize has its played on many adverts etc, it's been remixed so many times too.
I remember the first I heard Universal and I just didn't get it, but the more I heard it the more I absolutely loved it. The Universal at Glastonbury 2009 is special.
Blur are the only Band ever to Headline Glastonbury 3x that's the biggest music festival in the World.
    Oasis only got invited once.
This is the difference between the Global fan base Blur had over Oasis.
When it comes to music Talent's,Liam is not even in the same galaxy, Damon Was Before him and Still going strong now. Liam is just a has been.

As someone growing up in Manchester at the height of Oasis I've got to say I think you're giving Oasis too much respect, as Brit pop goes I much prefer Blur, Pulp, Lightening seeds, Ocean colour scene, elastica, suede, James, The verve, Manic Street preachers, etc way over Oasis. I just think Oasis are kind of dicks that abandoned their working class roots and act like their songs are way better than they are. Noel isn't as bad as Liam but they both act like they're gods gift to music.
Blur songs wise you gotta do Beetlebum and boys and girls
