Helicopter Flight: Malaga to Ellensburg, WA

- COME FLY WITH ME as I make a quick, 15-minute flight from my base in Malaga, WA over Jumpoff Ridge and across the Colockum to Ellensburg, WA for an FAA check ride at Bowers Field. This is a narrated flight with radio chatter. Along the way, I explain how I climb over the 1,000 foot cliff near my home, why the clutch light goes on periodically, and a bunch of other things. You'll see various terrain changes and maybe even spot Mount Rainier in the haze.
About Me and the Helicopter
- I have been flying for about 20 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
- The helicopter is a Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.com/r44-specific... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
- My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightradar24.com/data/ai... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
- I cruise at 100 to 110 knots -- that's 115 to 125 miles per hour.
About the Video
- The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro cameras, one of which is connected to the helicopter's intercom system. Both cameras record audio, but I dialed down the helicopter sound to about 25% of normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying. I wouldn't mind leaving it out altogether, but lots of folks seem to want it, so there it is.
- The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. (Screenflow was the only affordable software I could find that allowed me to do picture-in-picture.) Learn more about it here: www.telestream.net/screenflow...
- The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus.com/
I'm trying to drop flying videos like this one every Sunday morning and usually drop "extras" with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. Subscribe so you don't miss anything new! And tell your friends. The more subscribers I have, the more motivated I am to keep producing videos like this one.

Thx for a nice flight to Ellensburg on the jumpseat. Nice scenery in your part of the world. Best regards from a now retired ATPL-A from Oslo, Norway.
Thanks for taking us for a ride with you. Good luck (in the past) on your checkride!
I love the new camera setup. I'm so glad you're making more videos. I really enjoy them all.
Stunning views. Great video, thanks!
I absolutely love this lady; she's so calm, so informative and wow--what beautiful country she flies in! Thanks Maria!
You're making me blush. ;-)

Passed the check ride so I'm good for another year. Thanks!
I took my ppl in a Cessna but really want to fly Helicopter love your vids you make it look like child’s play
Nice flight today. I really enjoy the scenery we flew over today. Thank you for letting us come along
You're in your element. 🚁
Thanks for the ride...very nice. Good luck...
Did enjoy the flight, was great, I have a private pilots license, but haven't flew in few yrs, sold my little cessna and retired from flying, so this is very enjoyable to me, thanks..and Congrats on passing the check ride, knew you would!..
I would love to fly like you do
That machine is very quiet and smooth running. Nice!
Loved the flight. Thank you. Great pilot!
Another great video! Thanks for posting!
I love these videos, thank you ...
Thanks for posting.
Love your videos!
Thanks for the video. Always enjoy them. Keep em coming, please.
Great enjoyable video as always. Thanks
Really enjoyed the video! Thank you.
thanks for taking me with you
Always interesting to watch, thanks!
Maria, your videos are the best! Keep them coming.
Little or long, a fly with you is always a nice enjoyable journey. We've learned a little more flying lessons from you. Take respect and regards.
Loved the flight!! Very informative and nice scenery!! Thank you 💪🚁✌️👏😎
Yet another very enjoyable flight. Keep them coming!
Thanks for naming the waypoints. I'll use those next time I am in the area. People will think I am a local.
I remember getting scolded by a pilot who wasn't local because I was using local landmarks instead of VOR distances and directions. Hell, I've never even navigated by VOR. Despite his nastiness, I did make my radio calls using distances/directions from the airport whenver I could. But seriously: what's so difficult about "south end bridges" in a town with only one pair of bridges in its south end? And "Confluence" where there's only one place where two rivers meet? Sometimes I wonder if some airplane pilots ever look out the window.
@@FlyingMAir Not to mention the range of your radio..Like what 15-25 miles tops?
Radio is line of sight, but yes, I think 20-25 miles is probably the top of the range if there's no terrain between me and the other radio.
Love the scenery on these flights. Makes me want to move out west someday! Thanks for sharing this flight!!
Watching now!!✌️
You make it look so easy!
That was great, thx for the video!
You make it look easy! Nice job!
Nice flying and narrative
Great job!
The clutch warning light comes on in the R-44 when the belt is automaticly re-tensioning itself and there is a lapse in the sensor, also the belt gets warm in flight,as long as you count to 5 and it goes out no problem, when the belts become stretched the light will come on more often as it compensates to move upwards, side movement due to a worn tie band can also cause fluctuations and also engine manifold pressure as well.
Pre flight inspection of the two belts is a good thing to do and get used to,check the sheaves for obvious wear, any sideways movement will show as a dull edge to the belt, the two belts are fitted as matched pairs and should have equal wear and stretch.
When the clutch actuator comes into action then there will be belt tensioning taking place,if the illuminated light persists then get the system checked no question, engineers can check cold belt tension and make sure they are within limits.
That was a lovely scenic flight, that airfield must hold some history Maria, hope that your FAA check ride went well.
The R44 has four clutch belts. The R22 has 2 clutch belts. They both have the same system otherwise. (Obviously different width sheeves.) Not sure of the history of Bowers Field; I guess it's worth looking up one of these days.
Small world. Yesterday I was in Malaga, WA. Except my WA is Western Australia. And our Malaga is a large industrial area of businesses within the city of Perth. Long story short I would rather be in your Malaga, WA any day of the week. 😊 love the views you see.
Maria, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Glad to see you uploading regularly again. Hope the check ride went perfectly!
Loved it...so glad to find your channel ty
Nice enjoyable flight to watch.
Great video. I love the tours and the information. I'm not a pilot but I really enjoy your videos.
Hahaha the most funny part in the video is at 16:15 ! Love your videos lady, you are not boring and you are not annoying in your talk, keep them coming!
Again,a great entertaining video. Keep it up
Enjoyed the flight!
muy lindo video, desde Argentina
Nice vid! Thanks for sharing! And love your talking! As friends! hahaha !
Nice job..
Awesome Video!!! My Hat just came it.. Fits Perfect!!!
Great!
Thanks for the ride it was neat lol. I was gonna mention the hops but you beat me too it. They sure make the inside of a semi trailer smell. Ive loaded there and hauled them to budweiser in st. Louis when you get there and open the doors the smell will knock you down strong odor. Stay safe good luck with your test
My ex-wife's grand parents used to live just a little north-west of Chelan. I love that area. They had about a 17 acre apple orchard
Best of luck with the check ride.
Thanks. Passed.
great video as always,
I'd love to see a small inset pic of the gauges during a flight like this to show all the different changes..
Saw an R44 on Friday in York UK and thought of your Vlogs.
Enjoyed the trip. Have always wanted to drive the Colockum from Ellensburg north. Enjoy all your trips. Live close to Zirkle Fruit corporate warehouse and get to watch their helicopters all the time. Enjoy watching them dry the cherry's in orchards near me. Have a great week and be safe.
I'd also like to take the back road from Wenatchee to Ellensburg in my Jeep. One of these days...
Fantastic! I love watching your videos. I had the opportunity to fly a friends Hughes helicopter a few years ago. Wow! If it wasn't so expensive I would have liked to have gotten a license.
You are very safe and efficient, I like tha
thanks for adding the link to teespring....2 shirts ordered!
Thanks very much!
Very nice flight over beautiful scenery!!! Do you ever just fly out to a flat hilltop land have lunch, relax and enjoy the view???
Not lately.
As an instructor at ELN, it sounds like you got lucky coming in between flight blocks which saved you from dealing with 5 archers in the pattern haha.
LOL. I was lucky with my landing and departure later on, but not so lucky with my check ride. I did an autorotation to the runway with the FAA examiner on board between two landing flights! There had to be at least three in the pattern.
That looks like Washington! I'm in Montana, constantly studying rotorary aviation in case I get the chance to go to ground school / flight school. :) I love your videos ^_^
So, when you mentioned your altitudes, I'm thinking, "Oh! She's only 280 ft. lower than the courthouse in my town!" Lol :)
An hour and a half by car (according to Google Maps). SIXTEEN MINUTES by helicopter.
The shortest distance between two points is always a straight line.
Another great vid! Thanx!
Never flew a helo, but you make it look really tempting.
Could you make a video about the checkride you took? Maybe replay it solo? Very interested in that.
Thank you and look forward for more!
There's nothing much to it. You just perform maneuvers on command. It should be very much like practicing with a CFI right before a check ride.
As you are climbing higher I swear I had to keep popping my ears, I guess that means your videos are really good quality, lol.
It's definitely an ear-popping flight.
Yes )
Why don't you keep the helicopter at your house during the cherry season? It seems like it'd be more convenient than having to travel to it each time..?
BTW Love your videos - keep em going!!
You could clearly hear the engine on takeoff and the RPM didn't change at all... Good governor.
The governor is very solid in a Robinson. I very seldom hear changes in engine sound.
Thanks again, Maria. An hour and a half drive or a 20 min flight. Will you tell us some of the most surprising, shocking, funny things you’ve seen in your years of flying?
That's a good question for my next Ask Me Anything chat.
Hope the check ride went fine!
+1 :)
Thanks! I passed and that's all I care about. :-)
I had no doubt you would pass.
I'd wish you best of luck , but I'm sure you'll ace your check ride .
Thanks. I passed.
Great videos, I enjoy them! Do you have any video of instrument approaches?
Thanks. No, I'm not instrument rated so I don't do any instrument flying.
Got my hat today, thanks, happy to support your channel. If you ever go up to the Desert Canyon resorts area it would be great if you could video some
Of the area. I golfed there and stayed in their condos when they first opened. Probably at least 25 to 30 yrs ago.
Love the videos - Are you able to overfly the Grand Coulee dam? I would love to see that. I bet it's out of your way though.
Yes, I could fly up there but yes, it's definitely out of the way. I'll see what I can do.
@@FlyingMAir I appreciate the reply Maria - again, thank you for the excellent videos. I haven't been to WA since 2011 and I'm itching to go back. I fell in love with the place back then.
I use add time to rotate my phone and get thumbs up out of the way early on...when at home on TV immediately after add(s) I can pause and while the time line is up I click left to furthest icon and open it to reveal the thumbs up icon ( double check to not accidentally land on thumb down!!! ) I cannot comment from TV other than thumbs up, only the phone/tablet ..hope to support by membership soon, thanks!!
Bit surprised you can see Raineer from near Ellensburg. Would of thought the Snoqualmie pass mountains would be in your way.
Well, Rainier IS higher than Snoqualmie Pass and I was seeing it from the air. Not sure if you can see it from the ground at Ellensburg. I've never actually looked.
@@FlyingMAir well thanks for making the video regardless
Cashmere huh? hmm maybe you are hinting at a nice cashmere sweater for those chilly mornings in the R44!!!
When it gets cold, I go south. No need for a sweater. :-)
Question; You mentioned pot farmers, in a previous video. Do you dry the plants?
Love your videos BTW!
I don't think that's a thing, but even if it is, the answer is no.
Nice 👍 flight. Hope your check ride went well. Can you explain what GoPro you’re using and what settings? Are you using Protune On or Off, 1080 or 4K, FPS. Thanks. I’m using the GoPro Hero 7 Black in my Jetranger. How are you capturing the audio?
czcams.com/video/0sLhvk2nIFI/video.html
Great video, as always!! Do examiners ever do unannounced exams for whatever reason(s)m where they'd come to you??
They do ramp checks, which are spot inspections of the aircraft at airports. I don't think they can do unannounced check rides.
@@FlyingMAir OSHA makes unannounced inspections all of the time, so that's what made me ask my question. I know that the two industries aren't alike in this regard; I was just curious. Thanks, Maria!!
I think that would be the equivalent of a ramp check. I've been ramp checked twice in 20 years.
But how did the Checkride go??
Passed!
What does an FAA Check ride make you do? Is it pass/fail or graded A-F???
It's a check ride. Answer questions in an oral exam, perform maneuvers in a practical (flight) exam. A Part 135 check ride is the same as a Commercial Helicopter check ride, with more emphasis on Part 135-specific information.
Good flight Maria, and good luck on your check ride - you'll do well - we're cheering for ya! (I can't remember, do they charge for check rides? is it in place of a bi-annual?) Take care - fly safe.
It's a Part 135 check ride. Annual. No charge -- except in stress. :-)
@@FlyingMAir Thanks for getting back, we're sure you did well - anxious to hear about it. (I failed my first check ride - had had a car accident an hour before, should have postponed...passed OK two days later... but know what you mean about the stress)
One other reason to fly to Ellensburg might be to attend the Downtown Geology Lectures by Nick Zentner. They are extremely interesting, in part because Nick is a talented lecturer, but also because Washington is such a weird place. www.nickzentner.com/read-me
I'm actually trying to get Nick Zentner to do a collaboration with me for a video. He's interested but we have to iron out details.
@@FlyingMAir I've seen a lot of his lectures on CZcams and was thinking of the geology that he has talked about while flying with you, especially that thick lava bed exposed at Jumpoff Ridge? Good luck, I'm sure he'd be excited to see some of the Washington terrain from your helicopter!
Great to know you are in touch. I'd love to see the fusion of the subterranean and aerial worldviews, and you two appear to be exceptionally well-placed to make it happen.
FlyingMAir Would be cool to fly over the West Bar ripples when the light is right.
13:15 I did not know helicopters should not enter the traffic pattern used by fixed wing traffic. I always assumed helicopters avoided running the pattern to land faster.
www.aneclecticmind.com/2010/03/04/blogging-the-fars-avoid-the-flow-of-fixed-wing-traffic/
It does generally make it possible for us to get on the ground faster, though.
I know that I could google this, but what exactly does the altimeter do and is it something you have to manually change either from weather or ATC updates?
lmgtfy.com/?q=what+does+an+altimeter+do+and+how+do+you+set+it%3F
@@FlyingMAir bwhaha - c'mon! I even self roasted myself in original comment :p Thanks for laffs!
Good Lord. I think I’ll stick with computing dosages and rates as a nurse, and leave this rocket science to you rocket scientists who just happen to also fly! It seems incredibly complicated and I’m glad it’s all in the hands of trusted pilots😊👍🏼✈️🚁🚀
You did walk right into it.
What kind of check ride was this? A biennial flight review? I only had one check ride (fixed wing) - as a student, thankfully. Nice vid!
This wasn't the actual check ride. I was flying to Ellensburg to take the check ride. It was a Part 1354 check ride, which I do annually to maintain my Part 135 certificate.
FlyingMAir Thanks for explaining. Yeah, I knew this was not your first check ride, obviously. I thought perhaps a BFR or something along those lines. Have you ever done a video of an auto rotation? If not, would you consider doing one? There’s a misconception that helos drop like a rock when the engine fails. I really enjoy your posts and also your narration.
@@Budmetro There's a video of autorotation practice on this channel not long ago: czcams.com/video/W9UEqinM0Js/video.html
Curious ..... did you have to install dual controls for the check ride?
Oh, yes! I don't know any examiner who would do a check ride without the duals in. It's probably required.
@@FlyingMAir I would be interested in seeing how you install the extra set of controls. Where do you keep them when not being used?
What's the flight time to Moses lake?
About 30-40 minutes.
Nice flight. perfect narration. Just no elk... :-( Ha Ha
I was looking. Really.
Ever think of moving to an R66?
Yes, but I'm already spending enough money to fly the R44. Why would I want to spend three times as much to do the same flying? I'm happy.
@@FlyingMAir looking forward to your next video.
If you were to make this trip by car how long would it of taken?
At least an hour and a half.
From Chelan it's at least two hours Cri.
How often is the engineer looking at your Robi?
There is a regular maintenance schedule, if that's what you mean. The shortest interval is 50 flight hours for a Lycoming 50-hour inspection.
I trust the check ride went well? N34490
I passed. That's all I (or the FAA) care about.
That’s all that matters congratulations
Does the climb rate vary between helicopters for the same model?
Yes. Every helicopter is a little different. Climb rate varies based on the engine (model and tuning), total aircraft weight, temperature, density altitude, wind speed and direction.
Nice vid again Lady .
(If you don't mind me asking) What does a flight check cost?
This one didn't cost anything, as it is required by the FAA for continued operation under my Part 135 certificate.
@@FlyingMAir I see. Thank you for the prompt response. Love watching you fly. Very relaxing for me.
What is your typical cruising speed in mph?
110-125 mph.
@@FlyingMAir Holy crap! It sure doesen't look that fast from your cabin view. Thats cool though!
Is that your jeep tj? If so, I'm inserting a Jeep wave here.
Wave back!
Thanks for the ride. How is the geology flight with Nick working out? When I saw you were taking a trip to Ellensburg, thought you might be picking him up. Always enjoy your videos.
Funny you should ask... we're scheduled to fly together tomorrow (August 18). It'll be at least a week before I can get the video done, though.
@@FlyingMAir Can't wait. Should be fun!
