Cross-Country Helicopter Flight from Malaga to McMinnville, Part 4

- Join me for the fourth part of my cross-country flight from my summer base in Malaga, WA to McMinnville, OR. In this video, I make an attempt to cross a dinky little mountain -- really a hill! -- that separates me from my destination. That takes me from my precautionary landing site in Woodland, WA over Scappoose, OR and almost all the way to Portland before turning around and returning to Scappoose. There's a lot of footage that includes the Columbia River. Although the weather isn't horrible, the ceilings are low -- too low for me to get anywhere. I had three cameras rigged up for this video, but only used footage from two of them. Audio is from direct connection to the intercom so you can hear me narrate the flight and make radio calls, plus dialed down volume of the helicopter's engine/rotor noise.

I should mention here that "cross-country" in the world of aviation is any long flight. For airplanes, it's 50 miles or more; for helicopters, it's 25 miles or more. This is only part of a 178 nautical mile trip.

About Me and the Helicopter
- I have been flying for about 20 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
- The helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.com/r44-specific... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
- My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightradar24.com/data/ai... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
About the Video
- The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro Hero 7 cameras (amzn.to/2Lxyzwl) and one GoPro Hero 3 camera. One of the Hero 7s is connected to the helicopter's intercom system with an NFlightCam audio cable (amzn.to/31syLTm). All cameras record audio, but I dialed down the helicopter sound by 10 decibels from normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying.
- The "cockpit cam" front-facing camera was mounted with my current Instrument Cam set up, which you can learn about in this Behind-the-Scenes video: • Behind the Scenes: Coc... . It's based upon a MyPilotPro Helicopter Mount (mypilotpro.com/product/helico...) modified to get the height I need. The rear facing camera was mounted on the cockpit bubble with a MyPilotPro Spider Swivel GoPro Windshield Mount (www.mypilotpro.com/product/my.... The "nosecam" has a proprietary mount; I didn't use any nosecam footage in this video.

First, I wanted to thank you for giving me great aerial views of both areas where I grew up and areas that I have explored extensively. Thirty years ago, my mom paid for me to go on a flight out of Woodland (back when it was a proper airport with hangers, etc.) and fly around Mt. St. Helens as a birthday present. I also got to fly over the area some with the Civil Air Patrol. The area has changed quite a bit since then.
Second, I want to apologize if your ears were ringing, but I found myself talking to the screen as if you could hear me: "...follow the Toutle River down." "Look for Cornelius Pass to get through." etc. It felt bad knowing that I could have helped you but that this was months ago.
Thanks again, for posting the series. Seeing everything from Tieton Pass to the Toutle River valley to the Columbia wetlands was incredible. Maybe one of these days I will get to meet you, and I can repay you by telling you all of the history of the areas you flew over.

Blue mtns and the infamous Cabbage hill on 84 out of Pendleton
Thanks for the video! Your intended route would have taken you a few blocks east of my house. At about 5:45, you mentioned taking a boat from the ocean as far on the Columbia as you could. That would be up in your neighborhood at Priest Rapids dam. If you took a right at Pasco though and headed up the Snake river you could go nearly 250 more miles to Hells Canyon Dam. You would want a jet boat and someone experienced on the river for the part upstream of Lewiston. There are (in non Covid times) cruises that go from Portland to Lewiston. That trip would be almost as interesting as your helicopter trips.
On my other favorite topic, the railroad you passed over in Scappoose and followed toward Portland was part of the original rail line between Portland and Tacoma. The trains took a ferry across the river between Goble, Oregon and Kalama, Washington, from 1884 until 1908 when the bridge over the Columbia opened.
We can fly through rain but Maria gets wet! 😄 I like the wiggle room, kind of pick your pleasure scenery.

You know Maria, you could go down to about 50 to 75 feet above the roadway and just follow them along that way. Even though that would be highly illogical. Safe flying my friend.
Dangerous, too. The trouble with getting that low, especially in areas that you don’t know very well, is wires.

Suggestion - Shorter video titles with Pt. 1...2...3...4 etc at beginning make selection easy for viwer rather than at end which is abridged.

What's the amber light on the panel? I'm not a Robinson guy...
I think that's the carbon monoxide detector. It was on near the start of this video because the helicopter was being idled. . It seems that Maria's helicopter has a bit of a problem with that detector, but it is easily solved by using some ventilation.... which isn't exactly comfortable when it's raining outside!
How far can you go on a tank of gas
Why couldn't you just land at Portland? It didn't look that bad.
First, I wasn't prepped to land at Portland -- I lacked information I needed about frequencies and FBO location on the field. Second, if IFR, I'd have to get a special VFR clearance to land and I'm not even sure Portland allows that. If it did, I'd have to wait until no other planes were landing or departing to get clearance into that space. Third, once I landed there I might have to wait longer than I wanted to before I got clearance to leave.
I've learned the hard way that letting in-cockpit navigation tools (like Foreflight) to get the information I needed to request landing there while in relatively low-level flight (in a wire-rich environment!) is a recipe for disaster. It was easier (and safer) just to go back to Scappoose and wait it out.
@@FlyingMAir I only asked because you were close to Portland and from the video to me it didn't look too bad. I know fuel is not cheap and that you are trying to save time on the helicopter before the inevitable overhaul. So I figured that it would be to your benefit to land at Portland. I know I can't see everything that you can from the video and based on your response I think you made the best choice and with Robinson not being a IFR helicopter you can't push your luck too far. Look no further then the Kobe crash when one pushes their luck too far. That pilot should have been flying IFR but couldn't cause his company didn't have the IFR certification.
You shall verify your radio calls, you miss out your hight in which you are flying.....
Is advising your height really necessary when you are flying a helicopter? I remember Maria has said that she usually flies lower than the planes, so it isn't a problem unless very close to an airport. .. Also, they aren't talking to ATC, they are talking to any other aircraft that might be in the area. (Since there aren't any towers or ATC at these very small airports.) ... By the way, I think you are translating from your language into English, so a little is lost in the translation. For example, "you shall" is a serious order to another person, and is not used in polite, casual conversation. .. (You are welcome!)
