  • Mick here - hello! We’ve had a lot of requests just recently to bring back ‘Our Guitars & Gear’, especially for my blonde ES-335. So here it is… albeit in vlog form. Ish.
    • Gibson Memphis 1958 ES-335 from 2017
    • Maple/poplar/maple laminate body with maple centre block
    • Set mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, 12-inch radius
    • Gibson Memphis MHS humbuckers (2017)
    • Strung with Curt Mangan TPS Dan Here 11-52 strings. You can buy them in our store: bit.ly/2ND1IHY
    If you’re confused about what pedals are on at any time, just look at the switch lights on G2 - if the RED light above the switch is lit, it’s on. (The other orange lights are all on - that means that loop is in stompbox mode I think).
    In loop 10 is the Walrus Audio Fathom Reverb.
    If you like the backing track, it’s also available on our store. I’ve called it Shuffle Kerfuffle and you can find it here: bit.ly/2MM89sR

  • @MrBingping

    When the time comes for new pickups I VERY HIGHLY recommend a set of wolfetone Dr vintage PAF's. I've owned and played dozens of PAF style pickups, Duncan to bare knuckle, lollar to ox4, manlius to throbak...there's no shortage of fantastic pickups out there, but the Dr vintage set has yet to be knocked out out of my #1 guitar. They've got all the buzzwords you'd want, clear, articulate, dynamic, beautiful attack, and most importantly, that mid-range quack/honk that just nails the old school sound. I've been fortunate enough to play quite a few vintage Gibson's fitted with PAF's and while all old PAF's are different, there is a characteristic thread throughout and the wolfetones nail it. Wolfe is also a great guy to work with, customer service is second to none.

    Mick. When I was a youngster in the late 70s. There was an ES-335 in the family coat closet. I snuck it out and played it. It was a very cool sunburst and I miss it. A few years later, I got my own Les Paul and off to Kramers and Fenders. One of these days in 2020, I want to have a Gibson ES-335 of my own. Such a great vlog and I am very pleased to see it.

You're passion for what you do is infectious, so much so that after a few years of watch TPS I've gone from GT-100 into a PA speaker to a bunch of analog pedals into the front of a tube amp. Mick, as much as Blue is your guitar, the 335 is equally so. You sound at home on this guitar, comfortable, but not in the normal Strat-y/SRV kind of way. This brings out another side of you, not entirely dissimilar, but just different enough to make this guitar equally a part of you.
    I’m glad you didn’t sell it.

    Gotta say towards the end of the Memphis factory’s life, they were putting out amazing guitars. The reissues were superb and excellent with no QC issues. I own a 63 reissue 335 Memphis and it’s up to par with my 95 custom shop 355. Idk how I feel about the ES models move to the USA factory now.

    What about you and Dan each making a video about your complete collection of guitars and a little cool fact attached to them ? Anyway cool video thanks for making it and actually listen to the people. it proves that you are truly interested in the people’s suggestions and shows the commitment you have to this channel. Nothing but respect !

    I think you connect so heavily with this guitar, you alas get great sounds out of it. I know you love the Strats, but man, these are just up your alley. I had the same feeling on Gibson, the December to April tour of " hey, Gibson is gonna be for players again! We're back! Love us!" then they start up with the terrible video and lawsuits and threats. I'm glad you could get over it, but I just couldn't and sold my 3 Gibsons. I personally felt I couldn't rep them. Not like it matters to them, but it does to me. Maybe one day I'll get over it. But I'm happy with the Suhr Alt T and the PRS now. You make a great point with the history and legacy. And really, it's your guitar, not theirs. And its very pretty Great video, thanks for doing it for us

    Mick, very helpful piece on the 335-I’m mulling over whether to own one-I use/record/gig with all my guitars, so they need to be flexible and inspire. I really needed to cut through the lore and hype and hear someone on YT harness the sound of the 335 (most have been muddy messes). You really dialed it in in a lovely, articulate way that spoke to me, as my current fixation is roots rock and Blues (but across the spectrum of each-jazz, country, rockabilly, experimental, old school flavors). Cheers, Mark in Canada.

      Thanks Mark! I’ve actually just changed out the pickups on this guitar and there’s a vlog upcoming - might give you food for thought. They can be super articulate guitars. Good luck!

    Just bought one of those. From 2016. Might be the perfect es 335 for my taste. Also love the MHS pu´s. Great, great guitar!

    Very much agree, even if you have a strong #1 type of guitar, owning different other types is a great way to approach the thing from different angles. If nothing else, it well help you to better characterize your #1, and why you love it so much.

    I selected and bought one. NOTHING needs changing.
    Blonde
    Because blondes have more fun. Clubby neck. It may be my imagination, a bit snappier brighter than burst.
    Great guitar, the MHS pickups are the best I've heard from Gibson.
    Besides changing pickups on a 335 is a hassle if you do it properly.
    Let it be, you won't regret it.

      Nice! Mine is definitely a little dark sounding compared with a lot of the old ones I’ve played. I’ll change the pups for something a little bit lighter at some point, but nonetheless I love this guitar!

    Hey Mick! I work at the Gibson Nashville factory and can confirm that all the ES style guitars that were previously built in Memphis, and are now built in Nashville, are still of the highest quality possible along every step of the process. Also you and Dan should come to Nashville soon. Maybe next summer NAMM.... 🤔

      Alec, thanks for the message! I was blown away by Memphis - and the Custom Shop too to be fair- so it’s great to hear it’s happening in Nashville. Would be cool to visit some day for sure. Cheers, and thank you for your work.

    Ha, the ten guitars thing made me LOL. I just had to do this exercise with my spouse, as GAS hit quite hard this year. Being a heavy duty acoustic player I had a little variation from your list, which is great. One of the guitars that forced the list making this year was a 1970 ES-335 TDW in the walnut finish. Sounds and plays amazing, and I got a great deal on it. So I agree, long live the 335! Definitely a must have in the arsenal.

    I sold all my Gibson’s because of the “authentic” video: Two Figured ES335s, a Les Paul Standard HP, a Hummingbird, and a Songwriter. Still have an R9 I’m on the fence about. All lefties. Vastly prefer the Collings I bought as replacements. The R9 is hard to let go, but I too felt (and still feel)very alienated by the video.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Před 4 lety +2

      This is really fascinating. I know it wasn’t just me that felt that way but it’s still shocking when you hear somebody else actually say it. Wow. Right with you on Collings of course. But my heart loves Gibson too, even if the corporate side has been bonkers at times. I also feel for corporations who have to juggle this crap. :0)

  • @MrBiggordy
    @MrBiggordy Před 4 lety +1

    Complete 'down the lens' honesty, again, Mick. This proves that corporate decisions can effect people in so many unseen ways. Still think you made the right choice, to keep it - it sounds pretty special in your hands!

      Thanks Gordon. I figure we’re all friends, so may as well say what’s on the mind. I think Gibson are probably aware of the hearts and minds game. Be interesting to see if they can actually play it from the heart over the next year or five.
