It's nice to see young people listening to music from us older generations. I was 13 when this song hit the airwaves. It is and will always by, one of my top 3 songs (and depending on musical mood, is first on the list more than not). It has a deep melancholic feel for me.

Love this song. Especially the sax solo. In 1972 Gerry Rafferty was in the Scottish folk rock band Stealers Wheel & had a big hit with "Stuck In The Middle With You". Later on, he went out on his own & then had the big hits "Baker's Street", "Right Down The Line" & "Night Owl".

Gerry's Sax player was Raphael Ravencroft who passed in 2014. Gerry (dang it) was already gone by 2011. The whole City To City album is totally fantastic, this is just one sample of it.

  • @richardmassingham1800

you will note that after this song was released, the sax in songs rarely ever was used. it killed it as no one could surpass this.

The image I always get in my head when the guitar solo kicks in is one of walking home alone early, early in the morning, the sun just rising over the horizon (as it mentions in the last verse). There's noone around. No sound of cars or people and the city is dead quiet except for the distant, plaintive cries of seagulls or other birds like that. That sound is what those first notes from the guitar remind me of.

As you might imagine, when this peaked, it was pouring from everywhere. It took a lot to get tired of at the time but it was viral long before the internet existed.

It's sad to me how blown away people your age are by a saxophone solo. You guys hate everything about "older" people's music, but when you hear some of the best of it, you're literally blown away. I'm glad to see you appreciate it, but it makes me sad that you've heard so little of something like this in today's music. Almost every reaction vid of this song by people your age includes guys losing their mind over actually hearing a saxophone in a song. Like I said, that's actually sad, but I'm glad you liked it.

I remember hearing this for the first time in the very early 80's at my mom's work when I was in elementary school, and that sax stuck in my mind ever since. I've loved this song my entire life.

  • @worldwidebirthdaycelebrations

Hi, Guy! Always remember! What powers these reaction channels, are the Baby Boomers. We were there, when these songs came out, so never apologize for starting with Audio versions! It is the Blue Print! The videos come later, and it is the younger generation that's more interested in the visual of the song!
    God Bless!

Never gets old - one of the best sax songs ever no doubt. More bands with horns - Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Fela Kuti - you can use some other genres too, Sly and the Family Stone, Rufus, Chaka Chan, Billy Preston (5th Beatle) Bill Withers.

This song is about Jerry going to a city to see his lawyer about the rights to songs he wrote previously . He would stay at his friends house to rest up before going home the next day . I don’t think he won his court case either . Trip huh ?
