You've got to admit, the music we older people had was not bad. Not bad at all. I so love being a boomer.

I'll second that! I do believe we are very fortunate to have experienced so much great music in our growing years. It's always been a HUGE part of our lives! I feel bad that kids aren't eager to learn to play instruments now.

One of the most underrated songs in rock in my opinion. The sax and drums and the guitar solo at the end and sublime vocals throughout make it one of the greatest.

Love this song. Especially the sax solo. In 1972 Gerry Rafferty was in the Scottish folk rock band Stealers Wheel & had a big hit with "Stuck In The Middle With You". Later on, he went out on his own & then had the big hits "Baker's Street", "Right Down The Line" & "Night Owl".

I was in a band when this came out and we covered it. But no one could play the sax. So my brother went to a sax teacher and learned how to play it. It took him 3 weeks and was the only song he ever learned on the saxophone.

What a fantastic first time hearing Gerry Rafferty reaction. You were almost there there with your lyric reaction too. This is the age old story of heading for the big city lights, falling in to an abusive relationship and heading home. Gerry had serious difficulty with his drinking, and sadly was lost too soon. Despite that he will always remain a Scottish music legend.

Raphael Ravenscroft (4 June 1954 - 19 October 2014) was a British musician, composer and author. He is best known for playing the saxophone riff on Gerry Rafferty's song "Baker Street".

Thanks, Mugnify - this is a nostalgic song for me.. so beautiful.. it represented "freedom" when I was eighteen, leaving work on a Friday afternoon.. out a little early.. paycheck cashed..driving along the Milwaukee lakefront on my way home (windows down, radio up...).. my whole weekend ahead (and although I wasn't thinking that far ahead.. my whole life - lol).. Others will tell you about Gerry... (he was a vocalist/guitarist - not the sax player - but brilliant songwriter) appreciate your reactions..

There are two different saxophonists on the track. The 8 bar riff is played by session musician Raphael Ravenscroft and was written by Gerry Rafferty. The main solo is written and played by Hugh Burns. Unfortunately, due to Ravenscroft lying about how much he influenced or wrote for saxophone in this production, most people think he does all of the saxophone part.

My take on this song; small town girl goes to big city with a reputation (the city, not her), tries to make it work; finds a few people she clicks with, but only partially... then she finally comes to the conclusion that going to the soul-less city didn't meet her needs and goes back home. This is a soundrack of an attempt at something that ended in failure. That said, the sound of this song is spectacular.

I love your reaction man.... I'm a 70 year old guy who was around when this came out. And you ask if he has more... He has LOADS more. I think that for a buch of white dudes from Glasgow in Scotland they had a lot of soul... We British we very good at taking the pioneers of blues and what I would call rhythm and blues (not what the kids today call R&B - The real stuff)... and then we put our own filter n it and fed it right back to you... from The Beatles and Stones all the way on up... Keep on Rocking.

Baker Street is a street in central London, and the street where the fictional Sherlock Holmes lived. The video includes some footage of Baker Street in the 1970s, when this track was made.

When the band showed up at the studio to record this song, their guitar player never arrived. They couldn’t get their money back for the studio, so they went looking around the building for another guitar player.
But s they could come up with was a saxophone player. They gave the guy a check for thirty pounds to play on this song. (And the check bounced.)

I'm usually most into the guitar and piano bc those are my instruments, but man there was some gorgeous saxophone in the 70s and 80s.
Another that sounds like this time period/style: Gary Wright - Love Is Alive - no horns but it's a such a great groove. He's the guy who did Dream Weaver

Little girl in my dads car, his windows down hot summer late afternoon after my dads off work. My dad would listen to AM talk or radio classic rock. I think Baker street is actually somewhere on the east coast, but it always reminds me of Chicago summertime traffic riding in my dads car, him tired from his workday. Peace.
