Wish there are more Full Nerds like these, where there is almost a heated discussion instead of everyone just agreeing to keep the episode light. Don't know if it was ever mentioned, but I believe if you can easily have a player 2/co-op on the same system without jumping through hoops, then it's a console! Keep pushing them, Adam! lol

I sold the Sony Mavica floppy digital cameras, and still have the sales brochure / catalog. The CD version came out in 2000, which got a lot of attention in the shop.

DLSS really helps with the transition to 4K gaming.
frame gen doesn't reduce frame stutters it amplifies it the wonky frametimes will be more noticeable as it drops from higher framerate.

Great episode! The Steamdeck has muddied the waters on the difference between a console and a PC.
I still don't understand why you can't play PC games in front of a TV? What do you mean you haven't cracked it? Just set the PC in the living room or get long cables, get a tiny side desk or a lapdesk for keeb and mouse. I did it for like 15+ years with a TV and a projector, raided in WoW on a projector in 2006. Still doing it, but have a monitor next to the TV for higher refresh rates/VRR as well as work. It's super simple if you really want a "console experience" out of a PC. You don't HAVE TO mod the PC to be SFF either.
Yeah, I never understood how people say PC gaming can't be brought to the living room. I used to have my main gaming setup as a couch and a 55" TV... Just a ran USB cable and a hub to a coffee table, and used an xbox controller for most of my gaming, or sat the keyboard on my lap and used the arm rest for my mouse. If you get the ergonomics right, it's really not all that inconvenient, or different to console gaming.
I've moved to a corner desk setup now, with a nice reclining arm-chair I've put on caster wheels on. Much more comfortable than a couch.
You have to figure out yourself how to make it convenient, interfaces are often not designed for seeing from a distance, scaling works unreliably. Throwing bunch of clutter desks is not convenient too compared to picking up gamepad and play. Gamepad takes up small space, desks does not
It's been tried directly with Windows Media Center and many big TV-based PCs and initiatives--that mostly have gone nowhere. Even Steam Big Picture hasn't really changed it. Yes, you can do it, but the vast, vast majority of TV-based gaming is console based.
I think Will put it best when he said Adam got up this morning and chose violence. The majority of the segment about the death of consoles is Adam not defining his point of view and then demanding others to prove him wrong. That combined with him not letting people talk is hard to watch, tbh.

1:06:25 The one main reason, (that was not really discussed), is the fact that Consoles are a way for younger people to get into gaming who dont know how to build a computer themselves and dont much money in the first place (lets not forget how blessed those of us are who can afford the things so many others cant). Kids relying on consoles to get into gaming will never change unless we get to a point where genetically we are born with this ability through our DNA in like 1000 years, to be able to fully understand and know how to perfectly buid a computer at age 7-10 or so without any instruction.
My nephew got into gaming, getting his first playstation when he was like 10, then i helped him build his first pc when he was 14, but even then he had no idea where to start. Even my friend 35ys old, who worked in cyber security software sales didnt want to try and build a computer and was more about just buying a console that just worked to play games sometimes and watch netflix.
All that being said, the console will never die because of the millions of kids born every year reach that age when saving their money can buy a $300 or less console. And as someone in this ep of full nerd pointed out, Consoles are often sold below the price of the actual cost of the hardware. Sony Playstation 3 for example cost like 7 or 8 hundred dollars to make at the time and sold for around $300 and was the cheapest Blueray player when blueray movies came out. I still remember a magazine from Audio Video Magazine recommending the PS3 to the Video Nerds as the best option for a Blueray player at that time as the Other company blueray players were still like 200 dollars or more in cost, and these were not gamers but video and audio fan people.
Is it? For me it was the opposite. It was the parents who bought the pre made computer from store ,,for school" and considered buying a console a waste when you already have device that can play games. Plus you will have to learn thing or two how things work, so it is much more valuable from that perspective especially for young people.
FYI the $61 for the first year for Windows10 updates is apparently for corporations only. MS has yet to announce if home users can get updates after Oct 2025

Adam does have a good point regarding the concept of consoles are dead. This is because the hardware is the same, however the OS isn’t, consoles are far more streamlined, it’s turn on and play which you simply cannot do with a pc. Then there’s price of a console , for a pc to even match the hardware level of the top consoles, it’s three times plus for something to just play games on. If you ask me why xbox is failing, I believe its development time to create games and the confusion of the two consoles with strict guidelines for games to be the same.

For me something about DLSS puts visuals in the uncanny valley. I've turned it off in every game which used it... except Alan Wake 2 in which it cannot be turned off. This lead me to only play a couple hours of the game before dropping it. I hadn't been aware of other games which force it, lesson learned and I'll make sure its an option before buy games in the future.
As far as the Win10 updates, the first year is a no brainer, the second year depends on how useful your hardware is, the last year- @ 244.00, nope. At that time it's time to get more updated hardware and a newer OS.
@1:29:30 The difference for me is that there's not really a choice on phone. I have an Android, what's my other option for a phone with any sort of capability that isn't Apple or Android?
Not to mention, no one else is using my phone. My PC can have as many accounts as I have family and friends (as I would like to add), or to make it more usable - no account!! I don't need to juggle accounts to have a PC linked to my TV to play games or watch a streaming service. The login is all on the applications. I don't want other users accessing my windows account and all the things that it touches or can have access tool...
The hassle to try and upgrade to Windows 11 just isn't worth it for me at the moment. Windows update won't even recognise that my PC is ready for the update, which it apparently is according to the PC Health Check tool, despite trying all their fixes. So I'd probably have to do a clean install of 10, run through every update again, just to get the windows 11 update, update THAT to the latest version, reinstall all my apps, figure out how to user their new awful UI, then figure out how to fix everything that's wrong with it, or that I hate... By then, Windows 12 will probably be out, and I sure as hell won't be updating to that inevitable dumpster fire any time soon
Consoles are not "just a PC" for one big but very significant distinction: the proprietary BIOS/firmware. That determines what the off-the-shelf hardware can and can't do ... unless you jailbreak it. And even then, how many open source replacement firmware and operating system projects are out there for consoles? Because you would have to replace the firmware from Sony and Microsoft's proprietary codebase to Coreboot or AMI Aptio in order for that console to become a PC, and that's just not the reality. On PC, AMI Aptio initializes your hardware, trains the RAM, boots the operating system, and gets out of that way. That doesn't happen on consoles. Consoles use PC hardware to remain walled gardens and walled gardens are anathema to PCs ...
Speaking of consoles being on the ropes, the Nvidia buying Xbox April Fools was awesome.
The consoles are PC's but it's interesting that Microsoft is trying to pivot their console onto a platform that's similar to mobile platforms that Microsoft has failed to break into before. Microsoft may soon have their own vertical integration of hardware akin to the iPhone and iPad while still getting a cut of all transactions on their hardware as Apple gets from their app store while blocking installs that don't. This could give more leeway for more form factors such as handhelds, tablets, and convertibles.
Moore's law is dead has good videos on the difference between PC and console.
The main difference is split memory pools.

Feels like people are still using PC and Windows interchangeably. Macs are PCs, Windows PCs are PCs, Linux PCs are PCs.
I would agree with this up to the point when apple decided to lock down the internal drive for alternative OSs. PC is also something you can build from parts. Like Gordon said, it's the difference between PC and personal computer.
Consoles are not like PC because they have dedicated operating systems and APIs and they are not cross compatible. That's why cross store marketplaces won't work. Elana is right (sorry if I spelt her name wrong)
The outrage of framegeneration is the latency, is terrible.

Microsoft recently took the crown as the most valuable company in the world. $61 is greed plain and simple. Ongoing security support for Win 10 should have been no more than £30 a year. Especially, considering the number of people that would use it. The total amount for three years cover, is more than the cost of a complete new operating system.
Also MS said that Win 10 was the last OS ever.
I doubt MS care about the e-waste. Based on that legislation should dictate MS support Win 10 for longer. Considering how much money MS and Gates have made, they should be responsible for protecting the planet against e-waste.
1:08:58 when was the last time that actually happened? The Nintendo 64 in 1996? maybe the Dreamcast or PS2 if we consider their Japan launch dates...by the time of 7th gen consoles (360/PS3) and on, consoles have been using GPUs that would be considered, at best, upper midrange on PC

Alan is dead wrong on console is a PC. OS is a huge part ot the whole divide. By his definition smartphone is a PC. And in way it is but console is specialised for gaming only with anything else just a nice to have.
Maybe an issue is that a lot of gamers use their PCs like consoles? Where they don't do much if anything else on them.
consoles are Sooo different than pcs, its not just the x86 architecture (cuz macs are pcs but they use arm). Consoles and its custom chips and motherboars are all designed to work to play games. If u dig into it a bit more, ull realize that installing linux on a ps4 hacked was a reall challenge cuz ps4 does not even have the same clock sistem as pcs and they have to make real tricks to make it work
The problem with Microsoft charging for security updates, is that it is essentially extortion. They will be making the fixes regardless, but you won't get them unless you pay up, and if you don't, you're being exposed to security vulnerabilities... I'd argue they should face regulatory action over this.
I believe this is really about Microsoft trying to desensitise people to their future Windows subscription model. Because we all know that's where it's heading.
if you think the PC is dominant just go and look at the game sales figures. Nintendo switch ALONE has outsold PC games, let alone combining it with the other consoles.
About Windows 10, just torrent Windows 10 21H2 LTSC you have will have all the security updates without giving MS any money screw them 🤣🤣 This is what I have and I think your good until 2027 but I will take Win 11 before that 😉

I don't often comment, but I have watched this podcast for years, and I really like Alaina, and how she expresses herself, and is always willing to take a stand against things that violate her principles, she views as untrue, or sees as hypocritical.
That being said, I really was disappointed to see her pivot what was a philosophical discussion on what is and what isn't a console, into how her human experience is different from Adam's human experience. Once you start delving into such inarguable intangibles you've clearly retreated from the debate and are now seeking refuge, repositioning to a fortified position in your own emotional shrubbery.
It was a shame to see her hit the bottom of the barrel so quickly in such a simple discussion.
I think the problem with that discussion is that no one was admitting any ground. It wasn't a discussion, it was a forum/twitter tic for tac. It was just never going to be a converstation that was going to be really insightful as a result of everyone being too stubborn (especially Adam in this instance.) But, it is what it is.

I don't understand what world Will Smith lives in. I update my PC all the time and have never had to uninstall Candy Crush more than the one time. (unless he's doing a fresh install every time)

A computer is a PC if and only if it can be (ergonomically) used to write and compile software for itself. Consoles and smartphones aren't PCs. ARM Macbooks are PCs.
Xbox can't produce regualrs bangers even with owning a ton of studios, so yeah, trash exclusives 🤣

Only way it's a full PC when you can pick your own parts and build it yourself, and run your Windows or Linux. Sony also does time exclusives before they port to PC. You have to wait over two years or more for the PC port.
Plus most of the console ports that make it to PC run like crap!
Exactly consoles are just PCs , that run games tailored to that console😁 I do have a OLED Switch and PC but I do favor PC more.
Let me know when it ships with Windows or at least Linux. Then you might be able to call it a PC.

Microsoft has a terrible history of making operating systems for tablets...for phones. Both dreadful to use. Not that Windows on a desktop or a laptop is great. Still missing basic features working properly like multi-monitor support etc. Absurdly bad. Even their M365 stuff is terrible on the administration side as well as the user side. Bloat, terrible UIs etc.
Adam is right. the other peoples arguments are not great. Consoles are literally slightly limited PC's. They gap is almost non-existent now
idk pc gaming is pretty terrible right now because of overpriced hardware and badly optimized games but its still objectively better than console gaming
I don't want Microsoft account I have seen how badly it has been implemented in one of my old work colleagues he has over her PCs have problems with Microsoft account where you cannot change it to another Google account he cannot change the apps come serve at keeps installing 360 professional and if we think else has been sent keeps getting back and he cannot get it to function probably off good that's why I want to f****** local account I don't want Microsoft touching my f****** machine and maybe that the noise thing you've talked about when people complaints. companies has no right to my f****** data it is my data if company wants my data it can pay forward
To me the distinction is that a Microsoft account doesn't add value to the user as most people don't use any Microsoft services. Also, last time I tried you didn't need to add an account to either Android or Apple devices. And you can actually remove the photos account on tablets at least, I know the tv has some crap that can't be removed
I started my carrier here, im just kidding the show is good , thx ! new hardware is always hard work, so im just listening this. im not on the operating edge but i commenting this now , and a should not be a terran in sc2, just to understand or comment this, very nice idea here, my laptop doesnt turn into a console yet but i see them in the future!! .. .. im not well promised (that)
