2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Review // Almost A Game Changer

- The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning ($101,815 as specced in Canada, ~$89,214 in the US) is here after much anticipation and it’s looking to completely change up the truck game. With 580 horsepower, 775 lb ft of torque, and the ability to tow up to 10 thousand pounds in this spec, the Lightning is no slouch of a workhorse. And as a first for any F-150, the Lightning comes equipped with independent rear suspension, instead of the usual solid rear axle and leaf springs. Thomas and James have been wanting to drive the first electrified F-150 for some time now, and they are excited to see just what it is all about. We hope you enjoy the episode! Thanks for watching! Huge thank you to Lucas at Heritage Ford and the legendary Boers family for making this video possible. heritageford.ca/

Saving a ton of money. 😂
@@markspoor4663 We still charge like $200 for delivery but whereas before it cost us like $100 in gas or more with a uHaul, we just charge for free at the local Ford dealership and make deliveries
Finally an EV that looks like a regular vehicle but I can't imagine any planet where I'm spending 100K+ for a F-150.
That’s a Larait. There’s still the Platinum trim level of the normal F150
You don’t have to imagine a planet. That’s $100k In Canada about $77k in the U.S. and there are cheaper options.
People have been spending that kind of money on F150s for years. You don't have to though, the base model is 39k. Sure the dealers are gouging the hell out of people but that's not unique, car dealers of every brand are scum.
@@davewood406 it's gonna be hard to get the base "Pro" model. Just like in 2020 when they released the new Explorer design, I couldn't find a base model anywhere, just a bunch of XLTs.
@@tungaabayarmaa gonna bet the “pro” trim will be priority for fleet sales. You might be able to order one but the customer buying dozens or whatever will probably be ahead of you in line.
This is something I’ve been saying with many of my truck buying friends. The towing suffers compared to ICE trucks…BUT many buyers of trucks in today’s market don’t tow at all. In the Southeast region of the US, there are large quantities of people who choose a truck, specifically an F150 as their DD with no intention of EVER using a tow hitch or hauling heavy loads in the bed. The amount of carpeted, locking tonneau covered beds treated like massive cargo compartments in trucks can’t be overstated. So for the working person that hauls and tows, the Lightning isn’t the answer. But for all the people who choose truck as their answer to the only vehicle in their driveway/parking spot despite the lack of “need” for a truck, this is hard to ignore.
ICE trucks also suffer a massive range hit when towing. Physics doesn't care about how you're making the car go. We just don't care, measure, or talk about it because there are gas stations everywhere. If you want to say an EV truck isn't the right choice for me now because infrastructure, that's fair. But it's not correct to lose that nuance in the mix.
I agree, however, given the difference in price it is a hard pill to swallow still. If the price of a regular f150 and the lighting where ballpark then this car would have no competition imo.
Most buyers just want the option of hauling to be availible to them. That once in 30 years does it for them.
Even for people that don’t tow or haul the range and lack of infrastructure is a joke.

Unfortunately there’s some bs law that if a dealer already sells the model the manufacturer can’t sell the same model direct. I hope I am wrong, but am enthusiastic about Ford’s trajectory.

It's not passed yet
I got drive one of these, and it’s admittedly the only EV I’ve ever driven for an extended drive. And when I put my foot in it it was like lighting a jets afterburner it was terrifying.
From my time with the Lightning, I loved it. I am an F-150 owner and have been for a while. I liked it because it felt like a fast F-150 with a large screen.
It’s a good way to convert people who are on the fence about electric. It’s not something super crazy and futuristic. It’s what they are use to with all the new bits where you can’t even see them.
It's a large station wagon. Useless as a truck! 😩
Lol when you cite the big screen as a distinctive feature of your truck I know you don't actually need a truck
Because he likes the big screen it means he doesn’t need a truck??? Oooook haha.
If anything you think “truck guys” would love the oversized screen as they like everything uselessly oversized on their trucks to compensate for their lack of personality and trouser size 😂
Forget that it's a truck. It's super practical and comfortable as a commuter vehicle, without the inefficiently penalty of a typical truck, and competitively priced in the EV market. I'd bet a ton of people shopping for EVs would take this over anything in the Tesla lineup at a comparable price.
Still the funniest intros of ANY car review channel, on top of excellent reviews.
The walking shot, the cuts, the dialogue, this all feels VERY Top Gear!! I mean this in the best way possible! The show was massively popular for a reason - they combined informative narration with humour and entertainment like no one before.
Driving around talking on radios in a previous video... I guess it's no coincidence Chris Harris just spent some time with them. 🙂
Well if you are going to rip off a TV show for content, you may as well rip off a massively popular one.
It took over a hundred years to develop the gas Ford F-150 to where it is today. Now, with less than 10 years of R&D, we have an electric thats as good as this. Imagine how good it's going to be in just another 10 years!
It will be a rare collector's item because ev's are a fad
@@Welcometofacsistube as good as this, you mean having the greatest acceleration but not being able to pull a trailer for more than 33 ft without needing to be recharged. Electric vehicles are great but there's a reason they went from Electric back to gasoline 100 years ago. Yeah you can make them better today, but better doesn't mean much. They weren't working with a lot to begin with. As a truck it really doesn't make any sense at all. You need electricity for it to do its job and electricity depletion is an issue on a smaller car. Now you're going to try pulling a trailer with it. It's ridiculous. Even if electric cars take off and make sense for someone driving 20 miles to work and back, or in that case they might want a truck like this one to do it. Even if that were the case, these aren't going to take over the duty of a real truck. They're just not a real truck, they don't have the range to be considered one. Even these two gentlemen at throttle House made that clear. This truck literally couldn't even feel the duty of their old Dodge Ram for one day without falling short. And that's not counting stopping in between to charge it up 3,000 times as the battery keeps dying.
@@ashes2ashes863 angry man, you do realize that this is literally their first attempt to create an electric truck, right? meanwhile the gasoline version has been improved and made changes to for over what, a couple decades? Give this a few more iterations, and it probably wont be any worse than the gasoline version.
@@bp9696 the first attempt with electric vehicles happened over 100 years ago sir. You don't know anything about history. Nor is this the first electric truck that's been anywhere near a production floor. The Hummer beat It by almost a year and the Rivian by more. The Hummers a much more successful truck than this as well even though I don't like the Hummer. The interesting thing is the F-150 is very plain and still costs the same which I find absolutely ridiculous. What are you paying for? You're paying big money for a truck that looks like every other F1 shitty but has nowhere near the range of one and constantly needs to be plugged in, and that's if your not towing with it. Sweet. It's not anger, it's more like disgust because they actually think someone's going to pay $100,000 to drive from one power outlet to another. They really can't figure out why the electric car themes not taking off.
You want to hear another interesting fact? I just read an article last night where they interviewed a bunch of people that owned electric vehicles and asked them what their next vehicle will be. The vast majority of them don't want another Electric vehicle. It was literally like 75% of them. Rut row. Everything's a great idea to you actually use it.
@@bp9696 I felt like my response was probably meaner than it should have been. My apologies for that. I just don't think they're going to get much better without the battery technology getting better. And sure the Battery Technology will be getting better but think about all the other things that have to go into it. A lot of the grid systems and a lot of the Cities couldn't support everybody charging a car. There's just a lot of things not going into the detail of this even Beyond the vehicle engineering itself. Meanwhile anything with a diesel or gasoline engine has been made out to be the evildoer despite the fact that they've really over excelled at producing something pretty complicated. It seems like they finally worked it out to the extreme work form it is and now they just want to throw them all away and start over again. I can't even buy reliable battery trimmer for my yard.
The bed scale is actually a pretty cool feature.
I can watch and enjoy you guys reviewing literally any vehicle.
Feel like majority of truck drivers in suburbs don’t tow so truck should be a huge hit. Barring some technological breakthrough, I foresee trailers with batteries within that can supplement the trucks batteries when towing.
😮
This was my thought.
Batteries are a good source of weight to balance ride stability. Having a flat-bed with a battery underneath the bed, the added capacity of additional cells would far out-weigh the additional weight of the flat-bed's battery. And it could even be a "smart" bed. You can control tilt, a rear-camera, ride-height all from inside the cab of the truck.
Or hey, if we REALY want to get crazy... Have an additional motor on the rear of the flat-bed. Imagine towing but not losing power on an up-hill climb because the flat-bed has a hauling motor? It would also help you get un-stuck.
@@sonnyrodriguez9850 my main concern is the added cost, weight and complexity of the additional motors. If somehow the extra batteries can drive the cars motors or charge the battery, that seems simpler but what do I know.
@@sonnyrodriguez9850 but why tho. Instead of trying to make ev work you can just use a ice without all those complicated expensive things and have very good range without the help of anything for a much cheaper price
That would make since if they make a trailer as a extended battery to the truck when being towed. Though I’m concern with how they will safely secure the connection between during the drive.

On a farm you arent towing 10klbs very far, just around the property. Factor in the fuel costs and solar charging(If available) and the Lightning is a great choice for someone who doesnt need to tow ultra long distances.

One of many misaligned things on this vehicle.
The fact that this truck can tow, have a truck bed, a frunk, enough cabin space for a family, be electric and also have the ability to act as a battery backup for your home through bi directional charging makes this in my opinion the most practical vehicle ever.
As long as you don't need to tow anything further than 90 miles.
So you think towing something with this truck and having 80 mile range is a good thing? lol ok
@@jeffschlagel5632 obviously, there are people who need towing vehicles for longer ranges and this vehicle won’t work for them. That’s fine. There are a lot of people who do not tow or only tow short distances, and that means that MrSiah’s comment is correct-this is an incredibly practical utility vehicle for a very large number of people.
@@TheDareD3vil Your comment makes no sense. Even if you tow 10 miles or 20. You have already eaten up such a large range of the truck you probably aren't even in range or a charger. To answer the question on the generator output/life, the 3 day estimate was actually a lowball to indicate worst-case with everything running. If a modern family runs a normal 2 story house with central air, entertainment center, fridge, computers, kitchen appliances, etc. you can still expect above 5 days of power without rationing it.
Ok sure plug your house in the truck for an emergency use. I really doubt it’s gonna have the Ampacity to run everything people are claiming. AC unit, all the household appliances, electric range, hot water heater, electric dryer Ect. Home owners would be better off installing a Full house Generac Generator with load shedding devices.
@@noneofyourbusiness1689 nah
I have solar and I see how energy is used. On an average summer day I'm using around 45kw a day with 2 people and 2,000sqft house. It's not going to last 3 days if you're running the A/C. With just appliances, yes. In the winter time, you'll be using way more energy, so don't expect to run the heater for too long.
Ya no it won't. It'll last a couple hundred miles when propelling the car, but run an entire house for days? 🤣🤣. Ain't no way.
And if you suddenly need to leave, congratulations, you just burned all that range. Hope the chargers along the evacuation route have power and aren't swamped with people who did the same thing. Contrast that with throwing 5 gallons of gas in the bed and having 100 extra miles of range just like that.

That was great putting Ice Cubes in the Fronk.
Bam greatness
For everyone……that has 100k hanging around. Good but hope the price eventually comes down. Looks cool
100k Canadian, 80k USD, and that's if you want some of the top options and trims, you can get this for 50k, the price isn't bad considering every other ev is even more expensive anyway.
@@raionshishi8290 I stand corrected 👍🏻
Love the Lightning. Towing would be a very small part of my use. I would rarely tow my small trailer. Otherwise it would be a comfortable people hauler in the luxurious interior. Trips to the building supply stores and camping trips using the Frunk keeping camping items dry. I would enjoy having the electric hookups for emergency and camping. Regarding powering your home. It's like if your using a portable generator. You power the necessities. Refrigerator, lights and other priority items that work from the lightning's amperage. Looking at Rivian which is a mid size Truck. I was Looking at their financial condition and their inability to meet their projected build numbers. I'm not sure if they're here to stay. I'm sure your aware. Unless you tow in the tow setting. The computer will drop well below the actual towing range. I enjoy actual reviews, not nit picking. I suggest finding a Rivian service center. Best of luck with your search. With the lightning, that shouldn't be an issue. A Ford home run
Just started a car channel please check it out
Luxurious interior? 🤔🤨
@@ebubeawachie yes definitely luxurious
Love the intro guys. Keep it up
This is absurd, and I love it. Thanks for the great info and laughs.
3:02 You two should make a video detailing your filming gear/process on the ExtraTH. It would be pretty cool.
As someone who has precisely zero interest in watching that, I wholeheartedly agree. I know there's enough people interested in that sort of thing to justify making it, and dudes like me, who have no interest, wouldn't mind a video being made that's not for us. Full send.
Maybe one of the best intros ever 😅😅😅 laughed way to hard. You guys are seriously killing it though. Not Porsche's just videos.
The best part about the lightning is it serves as a great campfire that wont go out after the batteries have thermal runaway
The Cyber truck, I wonder what happened to all the deposits that were made?
I think for a truck, the range should be a very important factor to consider. Evs have a long way to go to improve that.
Why don't we talk about range and the hit from towing for an ICE truck? It's because we have gas stations everywhere. EV range is only a concern because the infrastructure isn't there yet in some locations. That's not to say that we shouldn't push for better efficiency or battery technology, those things are valid goals. More that to solve a problem, it's important to understand what that problem actually is.
@@AndrewVanTil m8 you fill up gas in 2 mins the fuck you on about
@@AndrewVanTil You're right, but you have to a) factor in range renewal time and b) type of ICE fuel (ie diesel vs gas). Plus as expensive as electric vehicles are, you have to factor that in too (a 80k electric truck vs a 80k ICE truck). Diesel is still the best for pulling cargo for a reason. Electric does have potential; it's just not there quite yet.
@@cn2673 In general use, I currently spend exactly zero minutes charging my car. So we're already there, assuming you have access to L2 destination charging. It just kind of happens when you're doing other things, and you don't have to think about it, or do anything to make it happen; except plug the car in when you get there.
If you compare that to ICE refueling on a general usage pattern, you're spending WAY more time refueling (and let's be honest, three minutes isn't even a realistic target for putting gas in your car).
If you're talking about a road trip scenario, then yeah it will take longer if you're trying to do your road trip strike team style. If you're doing it more like the way most people actually travel, the time you spend charging on the road is about the same as the amount of time you spend refueling an ICE car.
@@ElysiumsJourney It depend a lot on how far you're planning to tow, and if there are L2 destination chargers available where you will end up (which is an infrastructure thing). Using an EV properly requires a shift in thinking about refueling. The only time I have to think about, or spend any actual time, refueling my EV is when I drive really far from home. The rest of the time, as long as I plug it in occasionally, it's always ready to go with plenty of energy to get me where I want to go.
The towing thing goes back to efficiency - gas vehicles are very inefficient, so massive roof boxes or trailers don't hurt that much. EVs are very efficient, so every little thing knocks off some of that efficiency
@L W Right, gasoline is more energy dense, I'm talking about the power train. A gasoline engine is way less efficient (something around 30% efficiency) than an electric motor, so while an ev needs less energy to go the same distance as gas, every added bit of drag or weight increases energy consumption significantly.
Gas vehicles u get more used out of it, especially when traveling long rang💯
@@charlesdawkins4341 You also don't have to stop every two or three hours and wait half an hour to recharge. You can stop every four hours and be back on your way in five minutes with a full tank.
Your comment is just plain wrong. Efficiency is a measure of how much energy is expended to generate a certain amount of work. The efficiency of the drivetrain isn't changed by how the vehicle is loaded. More weight/drag means more energy is needed from the drivetrain, so if you're burning fuel you will need more fuel and if you're using electricity in a battery you will need more energy from the battery for a given distance traveled. In a 30% efficient ICE, 70% of the energy in the gas is wasted to heat while in a 90% efficient BEV, only 10% of the energy in the battery is wasted as heat. Take both vehicles and load them lightly, their energy consumption goes down. Load them heavily and their energy consumption goes up. But their efficiency doesn't change.
@@Trendyflute Depends what you're calling efficiency. If "efficiency" is the ratio of energy consumed to energy put out, you're correct that efficiency doesn't change (and I'll admit that is probably a more accurate use of the word). But if "efficiency" is the ratio of energy consumed to distance traveled (which is what MPG is), then yes, a vehicle will be less efficient under increased load or drag.
"I had too many noodles, and I don't feel good." Ain't that a mood.
Very impressive first try from Ford. I see there are many in the comments pounding their chests and declaring this won't work because they tow 18,000 tons every weekend... but the truth is, a whole lot of truck owners don't. They use them to move their families, haul stuff home from Lowe's, and maybe tow a boat to the lake on the weekends. It'll do those things just fine. And the driving range will be improved constantly, with new updates and new generations.
Driving range cannot be changed unless you buy a new 20k bigger battery.............. it's not an over the air type of thing lol.... ev trucks are great for city folks who don't use their trucks.... so why have one? Oh you got a bag of dogfood at walmart? Hahaha
@@willrector9716 Thanks for making my point. You probably are just the type of mouth-breathing knuckle-dragger I was talking about; you think every truck should be 4X4 with a huge lift and monster truck tires, and tow 18,000 tons. Fact is, most trucks aren’t like that. AND, this is only the first generation Lightning EV. They will be improved in the coming years, guaranteed.
