In this video I build 3 small cabinetry projects for a van conversion. Being a big fan of vans myself this was a particularly enjoyable project.

Ive worked in a cabinet shop for 40 years and have yet to find the perfect sidekick ...
" A Left Handed Midget"
always thought that would be a good name for a band
Ha! Thank you.
"Ball Tick Birch" also sounds like a good band name.
Ha! I like it.
Nice work! Gin Blossoms taking me way back to some more carefree times…much younger, no money but lots of beer and a great time for college radio!
Today I have nothing clever to say. But I like your video. Oh, and vacuum that carpet before finishing shots Mike. You know this.
Thank you. Yeah, I noticed the floor after the van had left the shop. Otherwise I would have done a reshoot. Good eye.
3:53 Ah... the Robertson screw type. What a marvel of the Canadian ingenuity.
Indeed. Robertson has a name brand recognition problem. If you walked into any store here in the states and asked for a Robertson screw, no one would know what you were talking about. Either way, its a great way to drive a screw.
I have zero need to build anything like this, but listening to your bits of wisdom, watching you work--these things are priceless learning tools. Thanks!
Thank you very much.
Well done Michael
Thank you.
So cool. I helped my buddy in Buena Vista do something similar. I am totally stealing your idea for the rear shelf. Great idea!
Go for it!
Shifty Biscuits is my new band name 😂
Ha! Or The Shify Biscuit would make a good breakfast place.
That was so satisfying to watch i think I'm gonna have a great day today
Thank you very much.
Brilliant work good sir.
Thank you kindly
Another great one.
Thank you! Cheers!
A Farrington AND a Spagnuolo video on this fine Colorado Friday, must be a sign from the wood gods to get out in the shop this weekend.
Noice!
Commendable job 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
After getting lost on Allison Rd., 4 years later in ‘96 I found my way home with ‘’One headlight.”
Ha! Love it.
When something is Really Smooth, “It’s smoother than a School Marm’s elbow”!
Now that’s Old Timey Talk! Thanks Wild Man!
Ha! I like that one.
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure
My screwdriver and I feel so inadequate watching your videos, but we sure enjoy the entertainment. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
For Mighty drawer bottoms, I use 1/2" plywood with a 1/4" tongue/rabbit. It nearly fills the otherwise wasted bottom space so it's basically invisible to the user. It's a strong design when strength is needed in large drawers.
Thank you. I'm with ya, if it needs to be mega strong, I use 1/2" as well.
A double tapered sanding disc. Great idea! Of course I ended up ordering it. I have no doubt that it will boost productivity in my shop. Thanks!
Thank you very much. If you need to sand edges, it will certainly boost productivity.
Would love to hear your thoughts on using/not using the CNC on a project like this. Seems like a good one for the robot. Great work, as always.
CNC would be the way to go if I knew how to drawer better. Also, it would require an insane amount of measuring.
Thanks for the video. I really like your shop - a Powermatic 66 and a Felder - SWEET! I like the outfeed table on the Powermatic 66. Nice organized cabinets under the stairs.. You're a good craftsman!
Thank you. Not a Felder, its a Robland. I wish it were a Felder.
Good job Mike from AZ. You've given me some clever ideas for building out a drawer system for the back of my Jeep.
Glad to help
I came very close to doing the van life to save money. Then I just decided to move out of California. :D
Ha! To each their own.
New Mike Farrington video. Epic start to a Friday.
Thanks Collin.
Very nice work. I'm sure it will be greatly enjoyed by the van owners. I missed the "shop apprentice" in this video but am sure he gave the job his seal of approval before the van was picked up.
Thank you. The apprentice will be back.
another great video well done 👍
Thanks again!
At 11:08, that looks like A Very Good Router Table. 😉
Indeed it is.
Well done, sir! Fine craftsmanship coupled with colorful commentary is a winning combo! Feel free to use that on a t-shirt 😂👍🏼
Thanks! Will do!
Good to see this latest project, Mike. Welcome back & thanks,.
Many thanks!
A Mike Farrington write up in Fine Woodworking drops in my inbox and a video?!? Sweet.
Thank you very much.
Well done, Sir -- that van is going to be functional and envied. Also well done on your Benchmarks write-up for Fine Woodworking that I got today. A truly wonderful piece.
Thank you very much. That was a great joy to write.
Mike, great video. FYI after making about 50 cabinet doors and using your sanding disc I finally had to change the sand paper. Very happy with that disc.
Thank you. That is really great to hear, the feedback is welcomed.
Always waited for your amazing woodworking builts videos
Thank you.
Sliding smoother than a buttered banister
I like that one.
It’s always cool to get one of your drops. Keep them coming ;-) and have a great week-end!
Thank you.
Pocket hole joinery made this build super strong and the curves is a nice touch! You have a new subscriber! Keep up the great work as the goal is for us builders to inspire others to build something awesome!
Thank you. Great to have you onboard.
Gin Blossoms! You’re the best!
Thank you.
Harbor Freight Clamps can not beat them. Nice video well done
You got that right!
I like watching you work.
Thanks Mike.
Gin blossoms are an amazing band. Bands like them and the Goo Goo Dolls, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Dishwalla, Better than Ezra, etc.. all seemed to have their own sub genre in the 90s. While I grew up listening to the more hardcore alternative groups of that time; I've noticed that the older I get a gravitate towards listening to these groups more. An older, more mellow me I guess, haha.
I relate very much to this comment. I tell myself its just cause I want to keep things mellow around my kids, but I think its mostly just me getting older.
Excelente trabajo, saludos desde España
Thank you.
That is sweet looking Transit and cabinets! I am actually in the process of purchasing Transit also, however for renovation&tool-storage use, but I'll be making plywood shelves on the other side also, but so shallow that I can still stack plywood/drywall on the floor.
Thank you. Sounds like a fun project.
I'm disappointed there weren't any cups of Oodles of Noodles in the glamor shots. Other than that, exceptional craftsmanship as always Mike!
Good point. That was a big miss on my part.
Your sanding disk is so awesome, what a great looking edge for 80 grit👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, its a neat tool for sure.
@@MikeFarrington your the man, I like your videos😄👍💚🪵
Great job as always Mike! Keep up the great work. Already looking forward to the next video.
More to come!
Excellent craftsmanship (as always). Great results. I think I would have mounted the "Flippy Uppy-downy Stick" the other way to make it easier to slide something into that thin space on the left. Of course, that might have made it more difficult to remove and install the jug.
Thank you. I wouldn't be able to do that and get the jug in and out. Though, I think that would have been a better location.
Nice! Boy, when you brought out that huge chisel, I thought for sure there was going to be a parody of Crocodile Dundee - "That's Not a Chisel...That's a Chisel!!!" Oh well, missed opportunity, but still enjoy your videos.
Ha! That was a totally missed opportunity.
surely you mean smoother than a cashmere codpiece !!
Ha! I like that one.
Allison Road! Great song recommendation!!
That is a really cool song.
Always smooth job and chat😉
Thank you.
Hola amigo espero estés bien, SALUDOS desde Roldanillo Valle Colombia, 🙏👍q bien trabajas lo felicito Dios lo Bendiga 🙏👍
Thank you very much.
First time viewer of your channel. Great skills and results, and a quirky sense of humour with a deadpan delivery. What's not to like?
Thank you very much.
Thanks for the pro tips!
You bet!
Nice work! Classy and simple. Some company needs to license the term "Mighty Biscuit Joiner" from you and start selling a "Mighty Biscuit Joiner". I'd buy one.
That would be cool!
We use the same glasses. Glasses bros, yay!
You have good taste.
I think the double sided sander would get less hate if you put show the results more often (maybe even compare to handsanding)
Thank you.
I love your appreciation of music. Oh, and great build too! Would love to know how you quote something like this. Keep up the great work!
Thank you. Music is my favorite thing. I quoted this one on a best guess. I think it will take 3 hours for this, 2 for that, etc. Then add in materials. For this one I figured about 3 1/2 total days.
I'm doing something similar for a friend Mike, thanks for some ideas.
Thank you. Good luck.
Dammit....now I want a cup of noodles
You and me both.
Nice, Mike! Hope you're doing well! -Steffi
Hey Steffi, thank you for the comment. We're doing well, hope you guys are doing well too!
Everything looks great, Mike. I did miss your shop assistants, though.
Bill
Thank you Bill. They'll be back.
11:35 A sharp chisel is a happy chisel... And a dull one is a vindictive little shit that almost costs you a finger.
Ha! This is so true.
If you're waiting for something to be described as MIGHTY, 11:05 is about where it happens.
Ha!
Nice to see another of your great video, since I started looking at your videos, sometimes more than once, I can say my wife tells me that I have improved greatly on the quality and finish of my builds, thanks to your "teaching" over the Tube! No shop apprentice today?
That is really cool to hear. Yeah, the kiddos haven't been coming out to the shop much lately.
Finally a new video
Thank you.
Yeeeeaaaahh! :)) Love from London, UK
Thank you.
Nice Man U r a bad ass
Thank you.
Sade...oh man that was like an eternity ago now...how did I end up this age?........aw man
You're telling me. I remember listening to that song when I was very young, while running errands with my mom.
Another great build👍. But I was disappointed... why didn't you put a little drawer above the water tank. Every square inch in a van is precious. You left access to the left (nice place to keep a cutting board or a tray) and below the tank (but a drawer or pull out shelf on the bottom would have given better access to the back of the bottom space.
Thank you. Both those spaces were specified by the customer. I think they have particular stuff or baskets that will fit in those spaces, but I agree, a little pullout in those spaces would have been cool.
Mike I don't know why I thought you were going to suggest a Van Halen song.
Oh, that would have been good.
A Mike Farrington video upload day is always a great day!
Thank you.
Did mama kick you out? If so, the theme song should have been on the road again.
Ha! Fortunately that did not happen.
If I won the lottery I’d pay you generously to be your apprentice.
Ha! Thank you.
A great video to start my morning with! Is Smooth Operator smoother than Smooth by Santana?
Thanks Scott. Thats a good question. Both very smooth songs. I went with the Sade reference because it felt more esoteric.
Hey Mike. Thought I would share with you some of my recent experience. Recently I have started making the transition to CNC. I use the Cabinet Vision software to do this. They recently changed to a subscription model, and I also got it on sale for $99 per month... A lot better than 5k starting price that it used to be lol.
If you program the software appropriately Then you basically drag and drop cabinets and it will pop out all your parts to perfection on your CNC router. It will also give you labels and stuff which is needed for large scale batch work.
Anyways.... I recently just popped out a job in one day that would have taken me more like 5 days... That being said, I did get my parts cut and delivered from another company using the programming that I did on Cabinet Vision. But I know it only took them 3 hours of work to cut out my parts.
Anyways.... I personally had to hire a Cabinet Vision Engineer at $40 an hour to code the software exactly the way I want, and it has taken like .... Thousands of dollars worth of programming and training. But now that I have the software programmed, most of the work is drag and drop, and the CNC does all the hard work for us, and then it cuts down on production by more than half.
High level CNC is a huge pain in the butt to learn, but I would like to encourage you that in the long run it is very worth it if you can plan your build methods appropriately and have the right software for the CNC. I won't lie. It's been incredibly difficult and frustrating and to get optimal results a CNC horizontal boring machine is also needed.... But now my general cases can go together in all of 5 minutes with perfect accuracy. I now make single piece face frames with no seams and no fabrication required for face frames, dados from the cases to the face frames, wall hangers that rabbet into nailers for hanging into cabinets, and all drawer slides and most drawers are pre aligned.
Just wanted to encourage you to lean into the CNC hard with the right software. It will definitely make your work exponentially more profitable in the long run
This is some neat information. When all cylinders are firing, a shop using CNC can really produce a lot of work, with few people and very few mistakes. I would say that if someone wanted to start a cabinet shop, at this point CNC is needed. I have been making some headway as to learning my CNC machine. It makes building cabinets very easy and fast, that is for sure.
I guess my only concern is that overall weight of a van is critical and many cabinets like this would seem to add a lot of weight. Other than that, great job.
Thank you. I think all of this was maybe 150 pounds. I don't think that will be too big of a deal.
Yo Yo Yo Mike!! Great to see you back Bud. Look forward to your videos Man. Can I join you in being an analog guy in a digital world?? Technology is great but, Man I miss the simpler times!! As always cabinets came out super cool. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
Thank you Mike. You are totally welcome in my analog world.
I'm always amazed how smooth your table saw sanding disk makes the wood and still is able to keep the corners sharp. Using a hand sander always rounds the corners. And it's awkward and dangerous to use a belt sander on really big pieces that are so easily accomodated by the table saw. 👍. Can you give us a link to the video that shows how the disk attaches to the table saw? 💖🌞🌵😷
Thanks Suzi. The disc works really well for plywood. I'll put a link in the description.
It’s not too loose... and don’t call me Shirley
Ha!
Mike, you need to check out the band Night Traveler, they have an awesome vintage 80s sound
Thank you. Will do.
i have pro tip to i use double sided tape to attach the drawer fronts not bradnails no hole on the front then screw it from the back
Thats a good method. I think I used it in a video at some point. I only use the nail method when top quality isn't required.
@@MikeFarrington i like that you use blum hardware its top quality in europe i only use blum in my company
@@jonnyfischer4035 Blum makes some pretty good stuff.
im positive you've heard this before, but you sir sound exactly like Patrick Bateman!
Ha! Yup, I've heard that once or twice.
Your drawer lock design is technically called “failsafe”. Where do you get your Baltic birch? I’m having trouble getting my hands on it. I’m north of Denver.
Thank you. I get my BB from Paxton. They are also on the north side.
Mike, you really should offer your narration services to other CZcamsrs. Maybe some of those channels that use horrible music Instead of narration? I mean, it would basically be a public service.
Also, cool project.
Ha! If someone wanted to pay me to voice over their video, I would be happy to help.
How does one know when one has arrived? They have Mike Farrington build out their camper van! Seriously. Well done, Mikey. I thought for a moment that we had lost you to VANLIFE!
I took this project on because I liked the customers. They were easy to work with and had a pretty cool trip planned where they would be using this van.
The title is missing something at the end: "...down by the river."
Oh I like that. Thank you.
What other protective top coats do you like using? Thanks for the video.
Oil based polyurethane, pre-catalyzed lacquer, conversion varnish, Osmo, and a few others.
Where did you buy your canvas tool pouch or what brand is it? It looks very comfortable.
I bought mine off Amazon. Its titled; General Tools 89 Stainless Steel Automatic Center Punch with Adjustable Stroke
I'm a a fan of these hand punches; I use the model with a ball around the end, so your handpalm doesn't get numb. (my hand tends to do that after a bunch of holes) Perhaps it more or less shows my age, lack of anatomic superiority, or my pain level.. How do you like that kreggs drilling jig? i always have a meh feeling about their level of machine-making. F
Thank you. Either way, you get the benefit of the dimple. I would say its fine. It doesn't feel particularly robust, but its probably 13 years old or more and still going. So that says something.
Oh if you love curves you gotta do more campers haha
Nothing's straight in here
Agreed, not a flat surface in the things.
@@MikeFarrington making cabinets for my own camper was a nightmare haha
Hello Mike, I really enjoy your channel. Your pro tips and since of humor really add to the truly skillful contact. I was curious as to what kind of sprayer you use for applying your finishes. Also if you’re happy with it and if you had to buy it again would you buy that one or is there another one you would’ve opted for. Thanks again and keep on doing what you do.
Thank you Tim. In this video I was using a 10 dollar spray gun from Harbor Freight. For the money they can't be beaten. I have a few other high end spray guns that I use when I need more speed. I buy them in bulk, use them until they break.
@@MikeFarrington Thank you Mike, and again appreciate the things you do.
Raise your hand if you know the Sade reference.
My hand is up.
You normally rabbet the carcass for the plywood back but not this time. Why? Time/speed? Or the fact that it will be buried in a van?
I go back and forth. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In this case, it just wasn't going to be seen. When I did rabbet the case, it was to keep the look a little cleaner.
Damn those are nice. Can I ask why not use a system like festool's LR32 for the drawers/shelves/doors?
That requires that I stay on a 32mm system. Doing it this was, I just cut the space to any height I like. Plus, when just doing a couple, I find this way faster. If I was doing several of these, I would do it with a system of some sort.
@@MikeFarrington Gotcha - thanks! I don't know how I forgot about the whole "balanced cabinet" restriction.
Another great video Mike, and incredible picture quality. What kind of camera are you using?
Thank you. I'm shooting on a Panasonic GH5, and using Final Cut Pro to edit. Lots of room for improvement as I get better with the camera.
Fantastic video again.. Have a question: I notice a measuring tape stuck on the slider? Could you give more info on how you use it?
Thank you. If you are talking about the one on the sliding carriage, its how I set the flip stops. Or was there something else that I'm missing?
@@MikeFarrington i meant the yellow tape stuck on the slider. At 3:03 It is much away from the cross cut fence as well
@@anilsarapalli9968 Ah, that isn't a measuring tape, its an angle indicator My saw has a secondary fence that can be used for miters. That tape is how you would set the miters.
Toooooop
Thank you.
Hey mike what kind of tracks do you use are they fulterer
I think all the import ballbearing slides are the same. So I wouldn't worry about the exact brandname, these may have been Fulterer though.
“Pocket hole pockets???” Every new video you release gives me at least one good belly lol
Ha! I almost called them a mortise.
