    I started sweepin floors and washing parts in a truck shop in 1957. Thee were no grinders in the shop that were operated with a motor. They were all hand powered. Your job would have been done with a file. BTW...I have ordered a ditch bank 55" cut flail mower. I hope it serves me as well as your has served you. You did a good job of sharpenin and videoin. Also there is no way I could bend over that long. I'd have to sit flat down on the floor and then call for help to get up.

    Good demonstration. I did mine the long way by removing all hammers , took me an afternoon. Next time I'll follow your method, sure would save time . Thanks

    I like the way you sharpened the blades but kept them "blunt" for lack of a better word...keeping the cutting edge thick and less prone to dents and deformities. Also, when you flipped that thing over I'm pretty sure I saw a green tint to your skin! 😉 #JonSmash #Hulk

    I wish my hammers looked half as good as yours. I have a hydraulic tilt and offset so no way to move by hand but the nice thing is I don't have to ;) gonna be doing this in the spring for sure. I bought two replacements just in case. Hit a Boulder (didn't know it was there) so bad it broke two bolts!

    • @ritterjon

      I don't have any rocks other than a brick a hit once. It's shredded it into little pieces but sure made an awful racket.

    Great way to sharpen the hammers. I’d love to get a flail mower myself. But that will have to wait. Take care buddy!

    That mower is a keeper and looks like new good sharpened up. With shipping btw its pretty much double $$$ 2022 . I have their 48" tiller it looks identical expect underneath when you flipped it over. 😂

      I’ve tried to keep it looking like new. Not sure if you remember but I did give it a fresh coat of paint and a new decal last spring. It really has held up well mechanically even though the original paint was terrible.

    Nice mower and good tip to sharpen. I use a rather expensive 6ft flailmower for the ATV quad bike here in Ireland. It has its own B&S v-twin petrol engine (29hp I think). But it is a beast. Second year going and I did hit a few nasty stones....So at the end of this season will sharpen them all. But having an engine with oil on top means I can only tip it so far... So may take the flails of and use the bench grinder. will see. Althpugh perhaps the flap disks on the angle grinder are better as the follow the shape a bit better as it does not need to be exactly a straight line..

    You should try removing pins, hangers, and flails from two 6 foot mowers. Sharpen them all up and then re-hang them. I think there were 144 flails? One mower was on a 3pt, the other was hydraulically mounted.

    Good evening Jon..
    Great video.
    So… I have watched your video you did on comparing flail mower and Brush hog… and a few others..
    I will have one soon.. I just can’t decide what would be best for me.. I don’t really have much high grass it is mostly brush.. Both my tractors have turf tires on them so I have to be a bit more cautious what I run over.. I do use them in the woods but just keep my eyes open.. I did put a stick in my JD 1025 and had to put a tube in..
    I have never seen a flail mower work other then on videos.. Brush hogs I have been around and they do pretty good job..
    I do have a DR Walk behind brush mower and it is a beast.. If I can push it over it will cut it.. But I have to walk behind it.. At my age and having both hips replaced I can’t do it for long..
    oh well that’s enough whining.
    I just need a push to make my decision on either.
    Thanks for sharing..
    As always stay safe and always be kind..
    Cheers..

    • @ritterjon
      @ritterjon  Před rokem

      Hey Gus! Thanks for supporting the channel. The flail mower definitely will leave a nicer finish and can handle some pretty good size brush. A brush hog has its place to knocking down larger stuff quicker. However the flail shreds it up into little pieces. Then there’s the price point to consider also. Ultimately you’ll be happy with either.

      I replaced my brush hog with a flail a few years ago.the cut quality is probably a little better with the flail, but the compact dimensions compared to brush hog make a hands down winner. Whether maneuvering in the field or storing space, flail is superior.

    I’ve noticed that your tractor does quite well with the flail mower even though they recommend 20 HP at the PTO for the 48 inch medium duty model. Do you think the BX could handle the Heavy Duty model?

    • @ritterjon
      @ritterjon  Před rokem

      I think it could handle the heavy duty version but honestly I think it would be overkill. I think the medium duty with hammers is all you really need.
