This is a family friendly tractor loving channel that hopefully inspires you, teaches you and entertains you.
I love to read your comments!
Keep on tractoring and God bless.
I've been waiting for someone to try one on a stump!!!!! thanks! 😅😅
Your light just fell out of the flail mower deck and you don't notice it right away and you are going to end up shreading it up!! Oh no!!!
You never know till you try, great video, John!👍🏻
It was worth a shot, I’ve been successful with some large hazelnut stumps about the same size but oak was just too much.
Keep on tractoring!
Hey Jon, You might want to dig around the stump, expose the roots and use a chain saw to either cut it out or cut it down below the top of the lawn; just a thought!!
Amazing that you captured the frame of the hammer flying out in round 2. I was yelling about the light before you hit it - you must not have heard me.
Backhoe with a bxpanded ripper! It’s awesome
The tool did what it was designed to do. The bolts broke instead of the hammers which is good. They are shear bolts. A bolt is cheaper than a hammer.
Also make sure the bolt will fill the hole bc it will start to wallow the hole like the smaller bolt did i have the one wjth the rods and they under sized the rob and was messing up the holes
Yeah I think you've sold me on the flail mower Jon, now I just need to find one! Cheers buddy, all the best to the family! 🌴🇨🇦🚜🇺🇸 Probably time to change out all the bolts.
On many of these, they use a lower grade bolt protect the axle. They don't really call this out in the manual, just expecting you to replace with the same type of bolt. Hammers and bolts are field replaceable, but if the damage transfers to the attachment point on the axle, it'll require some welding. If not done so, it might be worth double checking the grade on the other bolts and replacing with like kind.
I've lost several nuts on mine. I replace them with nylon locknuts. When I checked, they were almost all loose. I have the upgraded hammers, haven't broken any yet, I go through some pretty tough stuff too!
I'll give you an A for effort but I strongly believe in using the proper tool for the job at hand.
Looks like a lesson learned Jon not designed for that job . keep on tractoring .
Dodged an expensive repair for sure Jon. At least you found the bolts before the mower deck did.
😮all I can say is send the bill to the guy that said you could grind stumps with a flail mower. I think the big difference is in RPM and type of cutting knives. It’ll be ok ! Now you know it can’t be done ! Have a Blessed Day my friend!
Thank you for following through and testing for us what many of us were wondering! But the bolts prob broke because they were weakened by the extreme heat.
Ha flail mower for tree stumps? I dig around a very little with a shovel and cut off even with then top of the ground with a chain saw works good every time
A battery operated chainsaw works good Thanks for trying and a good video for what a flail mower can or cannot do
Thanks for the video!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Sawzall and a Diablo blade would do the trick
Nooo, John...this is a bad idea, either backhoe or stumpgrinder.
You need to check on the replacement of the hammers too. You may have to replace them in corresponding pairs
How's she gon'? This was a good idea right up to the part where you engaged the PTO!! LOL Flail mowers are some nice and do a great job and now you know they won't cut stumps. You could say it got stumped by the stump!! LOL Take care!!
Well Jon things happen for a reason but at least you didn’t completely destroy your flail mower ❤😊😮
I might this again if a softwood such as pine or maybe some poplar. But am was just too hard.
Keep on tractoring!
The magnetic light!!!😅
I know right!! That’s one way to dispose of them. So glad I found that cheap light before I found one of my nice Thrunite lights.
Keep on tractoring!!
The nylon locknuts come loose from vibration. I replaced all of mine with regular nuts and lock washers. Haven't thrown a hammer since.
Agree. I think the heat would melt the nylon and make it useless. Nylock nuts are great in the right application, but not this one.
I am getting ready to purchase a BX23S. The PTO horse power is 17.7. I think your Flail mower is rated at 20 hp and up. Have you had any trouble with power when mowing? I really want a Flail mower but the dealer keeps telling me the BX23S doesn’t have enough power.
It depends. Your BX absolutely will spin it up and run it just fine but the denser the material you mow, the more loading you put on the tractor which means it runs out of power sooner. Technically you could probably run a 60" flail which calls for 22+HP, just as long as you don't try and mow down the amazon or something.
Call John you’re not supposed to use your flail mower mower for grinding stumps
If you broke two bolts doing that it might not hurt to replace all of them to be on the safe side 👍🚜😎
oh well didnt really need that light anyway🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think I may have a few other. Glad I didn’t sacrifice a Thrunite light!
Keep on tractoring!
Man you was acting like the flail mower was made by STARK INDUSTRIES or something. 🤣🤣🤣 Like you said "lucky you." I mean hey its NOT a stump grinder. A simple hand held grinder with the wood shaving wheel wouldve been enough to tear that little stump tp shreds. AND YOU DID IT TWICE!!! lmao
There is a reason you have a stump bucket from Artillian?
Jon, Jon, Jon, Jon 😢😢
What length bar is on your Artillian rops tool holder, wondering if my 42" bar will hold the basket and chainsaw holder.
I had a 42 but then switched to a 47 because I found that if the bar over hangs a little I can overlap some of the attachments. Works great for me.
Keep on tractoring!
@@ritterjon Thanks, did the basket and chain saw holder fit together on your 42" bar?
For a stump that small, you can grind it down with a chainsaw. Put on an old chain and have at it with the tip of the bar.
Yeah I might be resorting to that or maybe a reciprocating saw.
Keep on tractoring!
When will you be going to Yukon acres?
Not soon enough! We have a plan to go
to the cabin soon but not sure if I’ll make it to Yukon until late June or July.
Keep on tractoring!
5 minutes with an ax….unreal
That is an easy 30 min job with a shovel and axe. Should have left it 2-3 feet tall and pushed and pulled it with the tractor. 15 minute job at most.
No nylon nut , Double nut it Jon ,as good as a stop nut
😳
Good video showing what not to do with a flail mower.. and I think David from @rcaf polar express would be happy to see the yellow black safety stripes!
I thought of him too while wrapping those hoses. 😂😂
Keep on tractoring!
The right tool for the right job and a flail mower is not a stump grinder. Go rent a proper grinder or dig it out
I told you that before you started it
Well, I’m obviously not a very good listener.
Keep on tractoring!
Us kids sometimes find out the hard way...😅
Mate I'm going to be honest and tell you what my thoughts were while watching this, and it was "you are an idiot"
Could be worse
Don’t do it.
Oh sure, now you tell me!!
Keep on tractoring!
Now you have to hole in your wallet. I think that you should have used the bucket 🪣. Unfortunately I don't think that they designed it for stump grinder. I think that you should think before actually doing something stupid..
I think it would handle any softwood stump but the fact I was trying it in oak, it was just too much.
Keep on tractoring!
@@ritterjon it is a completely different type of bi5 that is used in stump grinders. They even have issues with stumps. I think that you should just stick with the bucket 🪣 .
