Preserving the food from your own backyard garden can be one of the most rewarding experiences. It allows you to eat all year long from the food you grow or raise yourself. As we get geared up this year for growing season, we decided to do a little sewing project to better protect our countertops and tables from boiling hot canning jars. We hope you enjoy!

Hello there! I just found you! I'm an experienced quilter and you did a wonderful job. I was just searching to see what the perfect size was for a canning mat. Great job involving your littles too. I taught my daughter to sew at around 5 or 6 and that stimulates a parts of the brain that not much other stuff can do :)
Here's a little hint for quilting. That top fabric is geometric(so was the back) so you could have just "spotted" for the intersections and followed those lines. As for the binding, when I make mine, one fabric layer will be at least an inch larger than the other and I'll just double fold that over the sandwich (fold it in half then over the edge so it's still a double layer of fabric) and stitch it down with a fancy stitch on my sewing machine. It saves time and uses less fabric. Hope that gave you some ideas, your sure gave me some!
